I know there have routers that have been crowdfunded. I think there would be a big demand for a dd-wrt that has the full verson on it but also has simple mode for people who still wannt the advanged that a router but just not the complex menu then people who still wanted the accass the full dd-wrt enalbe advance mode


I think this would be cool to have something that and that router firmware for the router would be completely open source
I have been thinking about wanting to make a router like this but have no coding experience just a idea what do u think
 
It has been tried, and shot down. There were also legal issues involving the FCC. In the end, it is not a new idea, and has not been worth the headache for someone to try to deal with.
 
Or you could just buy any number of ASUS and TPLink models that've advertised DD-WRT compatibility for years.

If you're the sort of person who wants DD-WRT or cares about it at all, you take the 5 minutes to make sure whatever you're buying supports it. This is a solution in search of a problem.
 
DD-WRT is utter crap and does not have the same functionality as the Turris Omnia neither software or hardware. ;-)
The closest you'd get is the ClearFog platform by Solid-Run today.

The guy who runs/supports DD-WRT is a bit of a jerk. DD-WRT works well for a fairly specific set of routers, and INSTALLS on many more...just the performance and stability is't there. They tried to make a one size fits all firmware...and in doing so made a proverbial mudpie. There's also that shaddy dealings with

I think DDWRT has turned into a bit of a shit hole now by supporting so many router across such a long period of time. They are in a phase now where a lot of the routers they support "work" fine, however they aren't performing at a high level. I bought a WRT1900AC many moons ago with thoughts of moving to open source firmware eventually. Now it turns out both OpenWRT and DDWRT support for this router both suck.
 
OpenWRT is pretty much the upstream source for DD-WRT development. DD-WRT has signed NDAs and agreed to use binary blobs which explains their superior support for Broadcom platforms. I think the main issue I have is that the author claimed that it was all his work several years and never contributed back or honored the original authors. You can read more about this by using Google. Also, why not use upstream when there's one still active and is much more frequently updated?

That particular instance is due to Linksys / Belkin not releasing source code from my understanding.

But in general, yes. DDWRT and the like have a serious problem with cohesion. Different routers have different features and this and that but not this and not that. It needs to be more of a unified platform supported by the foundation uniformly. Not some hack job on a per router basis that some guy is doing because he's super into it.

All routers should be able to use the same version of DDWRT. It would be a great platform if a few changes were made.
