Been looking at possibly buying a founders pack to get into the early access. Has anyone bought in, and what's everyone's thoughts on it? (That has actually played it!)

is this like a fancier looking smite? genuinely asking

Fancier looking and it has verticality unlike Smite. So, you can aim/jump up and down.

It looks pretty good from what I've seen. Though, maybe slightly slower than I'd like.

Considering buying into it as well.

Been playing since first alpha, it's a very solid MOBA, and good looking too. As I said elsewhere, Smite is to Paragon as Neanderthals are to astronauts.

I'm thinking about getting it as well.

From the forums i read it seems a lot of people are saying it's actually quite "moba" like in terms of it's gameplay/pacing. Games can take 40min-hour or so and it's not as "fast paced" as Smite or a full on action game.

I decided to try smite as it looks somewhat similar. Do not bother with the bandwidth to even download it. I played the tutorials then sat for literally 5 minutes to enter my first match. Waited about 7 minutes for my second match! Not only that but it really just isn't very fun. Hopefully Paragon turns out better.

Been playing smite for a few years already, still have blast playing the arena and assault mode.

i'm bad at moba's (terrible at DOTA, just don't have the willingness to want to LEARN everything about the game) other than HoTS, which is the only one i've been able to get into. If you're not a big DOTA or LOL guy can you be good at this without devoting 9999 hours of your life to it? I really am interested in it, it looks sweet. But i'm just more of an MMO/FPS guy.

I have 37 hours in Paragon, according to my in-game profile ( that's combat playing time alone, since I don't think that the game factors in how many hours I spent thinking about how to build my deck ).

See post # 33 and # 37

Paragon (new title from Epic Games)

I have access to the locked Alpha forum. The community is probably split, with some people not liking the slow running speed. It took me a 3 or 4 hours to get used to the travel mechanics because I'm used to playing hyperkinetic first person shooter games - the faster the better, the kind of game that will give you carpel tunnel syndrome. Esport level gaming.

The cheapest option would be to watch Paragon Twitch streams and hope to snag a free key.

If you are busy with real life ( work / significant other etc. ) buy the $20 pack and play the game hardcore for 24 hours worth and that will give you a feel as to whether you want to upgrade the pack or request a refund. The value of the founder's pack is debatable and subjective. The company is in PR mode and seem genial ( official launch is this summer ). I love the fact that the devs are so active on the alpha forums.

On a personal level, I recently made friends with another Esport level gamer and we've been playing together. He's trying to build a team, so we're doing casual tryouts.

This won't mean anything until you start playing but this is my Aggora profile:

Agora.gg

I'm going to put another 30 hours into Paragon, at which point I will know whether to buy the $60 pack or the $100 pack.

I have a SMITE profile: SmiteGuru - FishMarket - Summary

I have 705 hours in Infinite Crisis: Steam Community :: CryonicSuspension :: Games

Steam lists 114 hours in DOTA2 and maybe 10 hours in League of Legends.

It takes me 10 minutes to make a 30 second recording @ 720p and there's no option in-game to make 1080p recordings but:

The game has the best replay feature that I've ever seen in a first person shooter / MOBA game.

I have a i7-860 & GTX 780 and Paragon / Unreal 4 ... on maxed out, Epic settings will choke my video card sometimes to 4 frames per second. 1920 x 1200 resolution. I had to turn down post processing & shadows to medium.

"NEW HERO REVEAL: SEVAROG
By arCtiC on March 24, 2016

We promised you an aggressive schedule for new Heroes, and we meant it. Here's your first look at our first new Hero, Sevarog. You'll be able to play Sevarog as part of our update on Tuesday, March 29.

The TL;DR for Sevarog is that he's a tank who thrives in the jungle. Sevarog uses his giant hammer, eats souls (minions or enemy Heroes), and grows in size. By eating souls, he stacks health and gains damage boosts, which make him grow and become super deadly in late game. We'll be looking at Sevarog in-depth during our Twitch stream on Monday, March 28 at 11 a.m.

This is probably a good time to remind you that Heroes are always free in Paragon, so you'll be able to jump right in and devour souls on Tuesday. See you on the battlefield."

The same game but from the enemy perspective, in zoomed-out mode.

What was interesting about this game is that we tried to do a mid-line push the first time and we were rear-ambushed by the enemy Kallari. The second time that we tried a mid-line push, the enemy team did a 3-man ceiling drop.

SMITE is to Chess as Paragon is to 3d Chess.

I forgot to mention that I spent a nominal amount in the game already $10 to expand the number of decks I have. You start with 7 but there are 14 heroes and you need at least 1 deck slot per hero. It costs $10 to buy 7 deck slots. You can earn the other slots by levelling characters to a certain level. It takes a while to level characters in the beginning.

Because this is the first MOBA on a PS4, there are a tonne of PS4 MOBA noobs who run around in circles because they know nothing about MOBA theory, so there are "PC Master Race versus Console Peasant" & "Keyboard & mouse versus gamepad" threads that end up getting locked.

Something important happened in the Alpha forums. One person was given a 7 day suspension from the game for "using foul language in the game".

One person was perma-banned with zero possibility of reinstatement. The perma-ban is kind of amusing because there is a game mode for new players or... people using new characters, it's called co-op versus bots ( 5 human v 5 bots ). One player begged another player to surrender and because he did not, the antagonist said, "Go Kill Yourself". It's amusing because I've only lost 1 bot game ever and that's because a human dropped out of the game so we were 4 humans versus 5 bots. EPIC games never gave any warning that this was going to happen ( or maybe it's in the terms of agreement that nobody bothers to read - I know that I have not read it ). Some people are saying that it is harsh, others are saying that it is great.

Some people are asking for Harder AI, some people are asking for easier AI.

So I got it yesterday and went to play a few matches an dthe card system seems really really obtuse.

I played the mech guy and I assumed the card system was like the shop in lol/dota, but it's nothing like that.

In the card system it only seemed to show items for my character (energy items) and nothing seemed to be arranged in any way or selection. It just seemed overly complicated without any organization. I assume maybe I missed system but I thought I would be ablet o just jump in and play.

Guess it's time to read some guides/how tos.

Click on filter and filter by the damage type for your character. Assassins and Warriors deal physical damage, ADCs typically deal physical damage but not always ( Murdock has an energy-based sniper, laser rifle ). The cat in the mecha suit, Howitzer, deals energy damage.

Write down a list of what damage type every hero deals and memorize the list over time. You will need the list to counterbuild, for example, Barrier Armor prevents energy damage and Guard Armor blocks physical damage.

It needs a tutorial for sure, it's something that I mentioned on the forums, when someone said that they didn't like the minimalist GUI design, compared to conventional MOBAS ( which have pictures of actions - ie, someone making a fist or a 2 handed weapon making a 180 degree sweep ).

The game has a bit of a learning curve but just play around with settings and you will figure it out.

So... how do you figure out which heroes deal which damage type?

When you first load up the game you see this listing at the top of the screen:

HOME PLAY STORE PROFILE REPLAY

Click Profile, which brings up this Menu:

OVERVIEW HEROES DECKS

Click Heroes

Click on Howitzer's picture ( the cat in the Mecha suit ).

Click on Abilities. Mouse over each ability and basically memorize that stuff.

I want to play this so bad.

My advice is to wait until Open Beta in Summer. The developers are working on enhancing the matchmaking. The game will be free-to-play. I don't plan on buying the Founder's Pack because for a hardcore gamer who games 24/7, it doesn't make sense for me to buy the Pack. The pack saves you time, so it's better for people who work full time jobs and have a wife / kids. Even then, the value is debatable. It might work out cheaper to buy XP boosters. Even if you buy the Founder's Pack you still have to pay $10 to unlock 7 hero deck slots ( to create custom decks for each hero ). Factor 7 heroes into a 39 hero roster and it's already a bit pricey.

I made some videos for you:

Read the description for explanations of what is going on in the video:

The team that delivers the pink orb to the flashing circle receives a buff. The buff ( OP buff ) is a huge game-changer ( +1,000 hp per team member or + 75 damage ).

Thanks for the vid. Yeah, I am probably going to wait then. I don't play 24/7, but with this new schedule I have, I might be able to play more that I am use to before. I guess, I just have to see if the Founder's Pack is good for me.

I play alot of free to play MMO games and just got by fine without paying for in-game purchases so I guess just have to wait and see.

Thanks again.

I uninstalled Paragon last night, after seeing the latest patch to the game. I don't plan on playing Paragon again. I get the impression that the developers are being pulled between the internal balance team ( paid in-house testers ) and the wants of the Early Access Beta testers. I don't have confidence in the internal balance team. It might take as long as a year to balance the game.

There are overpowered characters in the game, that the vast majority of the players know should be hit with the nerf-bat, yet the developers don't do anything and even worse, they nerfed the weaker characters either directly or indirectly.

I can give you a visual, statistical breakdown: Agora.gg

You end up seeing the same handful of characters being played, which is as interesting as watching 5 million Wolverine movies from the X-Men saga: X-Men (film series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As odd as it sounds, they made the interface worse for building custom decks ( even though there are many CCG games out there, from Magic: The Gathering to more recently, Spellweaver ) where ideas could be taken from.

The developers built a game that tries to cater to both the casual market and the hardcore MOBA market, the problem is that in the act of trying to cater to two very different demographics, the game ends up satisfying neither, cleaving both demographics down the center line, like a sword going through a block of stone.

Here's where it gets bad... 1 month ago, Twitch Paragon viewers were at 5,000 viewers at any time of the day. A few days ago, Paragon viewers were around 500 ( give or take 200 ). Today is day 2 of the new patch and new character so views are up to 1,379 viewers @ 11am Eastern time:

Twitch

Here's the new character:

I get the impression that the player base is droping to the point that, the queue times are elongating, especially for 2 or 3-man premades, to the point that 2 or 3-man premades have to wait 20 minutes for matchmaking to find an opposing party. A month ago, it would take seconds or only a couple of minutes. It's hard to tell if this is an algorithm problem or a low player base problem. I've seen this kind of thing before when I played Infinite Crisis - as the player base started dying, the queue times would elongate to as long as 30 or 40 minutes, to find an esport level opponent to fight ( Diamond ranking ). I was ranked # 50 in Infinite Crisis out of maybe: Infinite Crisis™ - Steam Charts

This is a final analysis after over 131 hours of playing Paragon.

Edit: I just sent this to the Developers, to help them refine the user interface.

The developers emailed me a free key ( I'm guessing as a, "Thank You for the Spellweaver links" ).

I'll PM you the key via HardOCP.

Um... I'm not sure how to pm you LOL

Edit: OK I emailed you the key.

I got your PM. I will be trying it out. When I get home from work. Thank you.

I was pretty interested until I saw the price. $100 to unlock all current + future characters? Sure it's cheaper than the same in LoL but Smite is $30 for 70+ characters and DOTA2 already gives them for free.

But getting decent at DOTA2 is like a job.

This game isn't bad, I just hate the way the in-game items/shop works. It feels too much like pay-to-win.

The characters are always free ( the founder's packs will stop being sold in summer ). The Founder's packs are just a way of supporting the developers of the game. The $100 unlocks Master Class for all characters ( which is character level 7 ). You can unlock the Master Classes with in-game currency. That's why I said that the value of the packs are questionable.

In 130+ hours of playing, I only came close to unlocking the Master Class for Kallari.

I wasn't aware of that. What does Master Class do?

Unlocks the master class skin. It gifts bonus experience to the team 1% - 5% at the end of the game ( enabling other people to level up faster ). It shows everyone that you play Paragon a lot ( and might need to sign up for a rehab clinic ).

All of the Master classes had an orange theme ( I asked the devs to do a purple theme for Murdock, similar to Terminator 2 ):

If I had continued playing, I would have been one of the few ( maybe 1 of 2 in the entire game ) Kallari Master classes. I needed about 30,000 XP or so to reach character level 7 - to initiate the Master Challenge. The Master challenge has to be payed with in-game experience, the Founder's pack unlocks the gate ( ceiling ) for free.

You can get a feel for the art aesthetics:

This was the theme that I asked the devs to make for Murdock ( long range, laser, sniper character ). Purple / ultra-violet laser:

I still think it's too much for what you get but it's far better than what I originally thought the Founder's Pack did. I received an invite for the weekend beta so I'll be able to see for myself soon. Thanks for the info.

Founder's pack (the entry-tier pack) 50% off this weekend if it's something that interests you.

I played a bit over the weekend. The graphics are great but I felt that the movement was too slow and the card system is pretty boring at the moment. I'm pretty bored of Smite but I'd honestly rather play it than Paragon as it's faster paced and the items are a lot more varied and interesting than the cards that are all just, +5% CDR, +100 HP, +10 Power, etc.
