Unreal Tournament 4/2015

When does this game get released ?

It's technically already out, they're just dripping out the content as it's done. The aiming for more of a TF2/Dota 2 model by which community content creators can charge for stuff and they skim a percentage.

Most map are unfinished on my client. So the game is far from finish.

Eh these days with the amount of games going with the Early Access the label of "out" doesn't really apply as well as it used to. I'd say it's more of a case of it not being feature complete.

it seems to be aobut 2 or 3 maps finished, and about 4 in "shell" stage. Even the shell stage, it can be fun.. The game seems to be pretty fluid, and runs well atleast on my system. Even roomie came into room and commented about it. Its going to be very fun when fully finished, and quite a throwback.

The game is shaping up nicely. I'm hoping the devs implement a 'horde mode' style PVE gametype for more casual players.

I'm sure some will disagree, but the game desperately needs onslaught and assault back.

Assault, Yes.

Onslaught... ah, I had fun with that gametype, but unfortunately using onslaught to attract players to UT is like using bird-feed to attract wolves. The reason UT died (in my mind) was the lack of focus on what made UT great. If COD or CS offered vehicles and big maps, it would detract from what the players expected: there would be less players filling up the normal "COD" or "CS" servers, and the players on the big-map servers would eventually notice that the game plays like a close-quarters tactical shooter with vehicles tacked-on as an afterthought and most likely jump onto BF4 where that sort of gameplay is done MUCH better, with large-scale battles and vehicle warfare in BF4's blood from the beginning. Then the only players left would be the few hardcore fans, with MOST casual players hopping on, seeing a bunch of empty 'big map' servers, getting destroyed in the 'normal' servers, and hopping back onto BF4.

Sound familiar?

I disagree, having that game type in UT2004 worked very well. I loved the versatility of being able to switch between game modes depending on my mood....from Onslaught, to CTF....DM....TDM....assault, and I never had problems finding a populated server. What killed UT was not a dilution of game modes, but the fact that UT3 was an almighty clusterfuck on so many levels......the art design was hot garbage, the UI, HUD and server browser were all console trash, the maps were middling, the SP campaign was idiotic, etc. All of these issues were ventilated during the open beta which Epic promptly ignored, locked/deleted threads and released the game anyway. Epic just outright pissed off its fan base, probably because it was hoping that the cash rolling in from the PS3 version would be enough to make up for the ire directed at them from PC users. Didn't turn out that way though.

I will probably get flak shelled in the face for this, but does the game have built in bots?

I played this a bit last weekend...couldn't find many populated servers, best I got was a DM with 2 other guys. Still, not too bad.

The movement feels a little slow to me, but otherwise it feels like UT.

Does seem a little slow. With that said, I just don't really care for the movement in UT anymore. Much prefer something speedy like Quake without the goofy dodges and wall slides.

I'd like to see Onslaught back. The main mode I played in 2004. I would venture to TDM or DM every now and then. Even Instagib.

To add insult to injury, for Its time UT2k4 had (and still has) one of the best interfaces in a MP game complete with built in IRC support which made finding duels easy and kept the community close.

They did fix about 85-95% of the issues with UT3 with the Titan Pack and subsequent patches but the ship had already sailed at that point. Shame as next to 99 it's my favorite UT. New UT has been shaping up really well though and the Dev's are listening.

If any new players are in here or maybe even old school fans looking to brush-up / improve Zaccubus has a series of pretty good/informative YouTube videos. Basically a crash course of the basics and lower level tricks as well as advanced techniques and tricks. Would recommend to anyone just getting their feet wet again.

He also offers commentary on community Duels as well if that is your thing. Can't link on mobile atm but his name in search should definitely pull those up in the meantime.

I liked Onslaught back in the day. Still, I normally played TDM, DM or CTF.

I liked the diversity in UT2k4 and hope UT4 brings even more, even if Epic only concentrates on TDM/DM/CTF while the community does the more niche/unique gameplay types. I'd love for some wacky things to become super popular, like Bombing Run with Vehicles... or wait, isn't there a game like that now? :p

Are they going to release that building jumping map from the old ut? That map was fun

Morpheus is an awesome map.

You can easily tell from that video that UT movement speeds were a lot faster than UT4. Hopefully they fix that.

A lot of people would say nothing needs to be "fixed"or disagree regarding 2K4. They are still tweaking the movement including groundspeed and acceleration. 2K4 is actually a bit slower than UT3 and I believe UT99 falls somewhere in between. I think they are shooting for something that just feels good as UT4's movement includes elements of all 3 games and certain things that worked in 2K4 cause of the double-jumping and jump-dodging won't work here and things from UT3 cause of double-jump won't either.

I personally think UT3 has the best movement of the serires. I haven't played in months but there was a period awhile back where all I played was UT4 and movement seemed nice and fluid to me.

Morpheus map is the stuff of legends! Almost makes me want to find my ut disc and reinstall the game just for that map lol

Man, I'm eagerly awaiting this one, but how long has it been in "pre-alpha" or whatever?

Do you mean Morpheus?

That and Deck were my favorite original maps.

Deck was my favorite, but for some reason, I never really liked Morpheus. It always seemed like it made the pace of the game slow way down, and was really only fun with the Instagib mutator.

I've never understood why UT3 was so poorly received, other than that the doofy single player game wasn't presented as a "tournament." I guess because the server browser wasn't quite as robust?

Everything about the game was consolized at launch, there were issues with both the dedicated servers and browser. The game wasn't really "PC Ready" until the Titan Pack and at that point it was pretty much dead, sadly.

I... Guess? I never had any problems with it at all, but I guess I played more matches against the bots than I did against real people.

My biggest gripe with it was shared with UT2K4, and that was that it was WAAAY too permissive about mods, and it was thus always really hard to find a server that was running just the plain game, and not some stupid [DM-MapMadeByAFifthGrader], with the game speed set to 10000X and some doofy rocket launcher instagib sniper rifle mod.

Whenever I'd click the "vanilla servers only" checkbox, the server list would be basically empty.

Yeah, that was the issue. Even with the "pure" servers tickbox checked the game was basically dead. The other thing is too there were tons of servers that had custom sounds or rather Quake sounds but outside of that offered a "pure" experience and those were filtered out. Like you had said there was no good way to find those either if you searched everything, it needed to be wayy more granular. Had the player base not been basically non-existant it may not of been such a problem. The entire menu system was incredibly consolized though and obviously not built with a KB/M in mind and with the dedicated servers on both Linux/Windows having issues at launch a lot of the popular clan/community run servers stayed with UT99/2K4. The game could of been great from the start and it was great post-titan but already wayyy to dead for resuscitation.

DM-Chill is looking great...

And the new character model looks super nice!

Played this the other night for the first time in a long time.
I have to say it is awesome now. FEELS like good old fashioned UT, LOOKS like well, fantastic.
Game play is fast and frantic, and I find it quite addictive.

Servers seem well populated. Maps are great. Played "Facing Worlds" and it was an awesome blend of the old map and the new look.

Wow, I remember spending many a hours playing the original online. Good stuff playing LMS and CTF on instagib mode. Getting the clan to pony up money to host a server lol! Looking forward to trying this out!

I also played a game today, I hadn't played in a while, shaping very very nicely, the finished maps are extremely impressive, unfinished ones are still very fun to play in. Incredibly fluid animations, responsive movement, a blast to play overall. Way better than Doom imo

LMS was in the original. It had no maps that were LMS exclusive and used DM maps. I think. Don't make me google it.

What?

This is UnrealTournament... horde mode has no place

You are forgetting about about Invasion in UT2004.

Personally I would prefer if they focused on a handful of modes to avoid watering down of player pools....DM, TDM, CTF, Assault and Onslaught would be great. Just tried the latest build, it is exceptionally polished and coming together nicely.....puts Doom MP to utter shame. Hopefully player populations start to increase as more WIP content is finalised.
