[DEAD] SMOKING HOT! Canon Powershot SX520 HS (Refurb) $90 shipped!

Got mine yesterday and played around with it a bit. I randomly get "Lens Error Will shut down automatically. Restart camera". If I turn it back on it seems to work for a few shots and then I get the error again. Anyone else having this issue?

Great I threw mine in a closet to give to my wife on our anniversary in a few months, I guess I have to open it and make sure it actually works

Mine gets delivered today, will test it out to see if it happens.

Well that sucks. :( I guess it's the law of averages. I would contact Canon and I'm sure they will take care of you. Also, did you fully charge the battery before you used it the first time? Sometimes erratic voltage from the battery will cause this to happen on Canon cameras... But sadly it's usually something like a foreign body in the lens mechanism causing it to get jammed. :(

As NoxTek stated Krazen , I would contact Canon ASAP as I am sure they will honor the warranty. I have never had an issue with Canon customer service and I'm sure they will help ya on this one.

As stated though, be sure your battery is fully charged if you didn't before.

Yeah, the battery was fully charged. It now seems that the problem is happening when the lens is trying to auto focus right before taking the picture. Maybe there is some crud in there.

Thanks for the info. I'll call Canon and see what they can do.

No issues here. Everything came in pretty much perfect condition (this actually came in yesterday). Camera worked with no lens or other issues as far as I know. I haven't checked how good some of the images I snapped actually turned out when hooked to the computer, but I'll get around to that at some point. At first I thought the flash wasn't working, because even if I set the mode to Manual and turned the flash on, it wouldn't light up. Was about to return it, but figured out the issue. Turns out I had to hold down the button to get the flash to turn on. Works just fine. I guess I'm just not used to using an actual camera. Most of mine were film types and then the cell phone kind of does things a bit more painlessly.

I do wonder how it will compare to my LG G3 though, when all is said and done. I guess those large(ish) lens will help it win out some.

Interesting you mention the LG G3.... how do you like it (I mean as a phone, not just the camera). There's an Ebay seller selling them brand new for $179 shipped and I'm seriously considering biting on the deal....

IMO it's a great phone. The screen on time isn't the best, but ever since I've rooted mine and gotten rid of various bits of bloat, it has been a very reliable phone, with long operating times. If you don't watch movies constantly, the battery life is surprisingly competent. I think I have some shots of mine staying on for some 60-80+ hours. I essentially don't even charge it every day.

But I don't necessarily do much on mine besides surf, watch some Crunchyroll occasionally, play lots of music, use it as a phone (a lot), etc. I'm not one of those people playing games on it constantly. I think the battery life is a bit underwhelming in screen-on scenarios, because of the resolution of the screen (it's better than one might think though). 1440p is kind of draining.

I received mine last night. Aside from a fingerprint smudge on the lens, it looked new. Slapped in the 64gb G.Skill SDXC, charged up the battery and I was off to the races. Seems to work fine, I need to RTFM for sure. Thanks again OP!

Quick follow up for owners, where do you attach the lens cap lanyard on the camera body?

What I did with the lens cap lanyard was move it onto the other side. I found that the left side had little area for my hand to be on in the first place, so I'm not sure why they put it there. Moving it over to the right side gave me more grip area and allowed me to easily keep it out of the way.

Anyway, I decided to take the camera for an extensive, close range photography test drive today.

This isn't really something most people on here are interested in, but here are some pictures I snapped of the first Anime figure that I've ever bought in my life (well technically second, but the other one from this artist is a preorder), which just happened to come in at roughly the same time as this camera (pure coincidence, seriously):

Overall, the camera did a wonderful job focusing on the thing. All of these pics were done in full auto mode, in under 10 mins. Pretty happy with it. There's some noise in the full size versions, but I'm not sure if IMGUR does some down conversions of its own, and plus they're in JPEG.

Either way, heads and tails above a phone camera, I think.

Thanks for the sample pics, they look great! I haven't had a chance to take mine out for a "test drive" yet so I appreciate the pics. Going hiking with my better half tomorrow so I'm planning on grabbing some good shots.

Yep, what an amazing deal!!!

I purchased one from another member that had grabbed two of em. Suppose to receive it tomorrow. :p

I broke down and picked one up this time as well....hmm..now to find a decent SD card = )

I emailed asking for a free case. I see no reason they wouldn't, as I could just return this camera and place an order right now for the one with free case.

We shall see.

God damn you guys! My current camera is a very old Fujifilm Fine Pix S from at least 6-7 years ago. It will be a present for my wife. We are expecting with our first and she has be a bit down on herself. This will cheer her up :)

I don't like how cheap the battery door feels. For a part that gets opened and closed a lot, I'm not confident it will hold up over time.

Anyone have any tips for indoor shots. Outdoors in good natural light it takes great pictures. Indoor pictures colors are dull or washed out. So far I have only tried using automatic and have not been impressed with indoor pictures.

Let us know how that works out. I don't really care about the case, but I certainly wouldn't mind a free one.

That has to be a first... the usual complaint on the SX520 HS is that color saturation is a little more pronounced than other cameras.

You're probably seeing the affects of high ISO being used in low light when in auto mode on the camera. To get better color saturation and lower noise you can put the camera in manual mode and experiment with raising the exposure time and lowering the ISO. This of course has it's trade-offs as you'll need to hold the camera more steady with the longer exposure and it won't be able to capture fast movement without motion blur.

Your other option would be post-processing the photo on your PC to increase color saturation...

Thanks. I'll give it a try.

Updated the OP to add that the deal now includes a 'deluxe soft case' as a bonus item along with the 4GB SD card.

Honestly the case isn't anything special and is big enough to barely fit the camera. If you're like me and have extra batteries, SD cards, and also want to carry around the charger you'll probably want a different case anyway. But this one could still come in sort of handy. Maybe keep the camera in this case and then put it all in a bigger case to be double protected or something. :D
