I preordered my Rift within the first few minutes, and am now waiting anxiously for March 28th.

Whole bunch of discussion on the various subreddits about it, especially with the Oculus Preview next week. Would love to know what y'all think.

I'm ready, but waiting. Going to see how it plays out. Test a few units. See if I really find value.

I'm not ready...will take a wait-and-see approach...Vive vs Rift, game support etc there are too many unknowns to jump in too soon

Yeah, I have limited gaming time, so there'd have to be a killer app for me to drop serious money on a headset.

I'm kinda curious if Glyph might try to go into the gaming VR sector. It's a unique headset given that it projects onto the retina. Supposedly it makes for a realistic visual.

Avegant Glyph | Home

I can see them doing the wait and see approach, then jumping in with a gaming based unit - no headphones, high refresh rate, 1080p per eye (currently they're at 1280x720p per eye), and so fourth. They already have a 9-axis IMU.

I do hope VR takes off. It's what is needed to drive the GFX card industry forward. Because the consoles have stagnated advancement and PC-only ultra-GFX games are few and far between these days a lot of people don't see a need for newer cards. VR is exactly what's needed to get people needing to upgrade cards again, and hopefully that means getting some awesome card tech versus the incremental iterations that have been coming out.

Isn't the Glyph more of a media viewer? It's not a true VR headset like the Rift or Vive is.

Definitely right about the whole VR pushing the GFX industry forward, though. EVGA started making some explicit-VR cards with the front panel addition, which is neat.

Ya, jumping in with both feet here. Have both the Rift and the Vive on order. VR & AR development are both going to really drive video card tech for the next few years. This is just the beginning. Will start off slow due to the price of entry, but I predict it will gather steam (no pun intended) later this year and really start taking off in a big way starting in 2017. Looking forward to riding the first wave of this tech and those to come!

Gunna see about grabbing the Rift, but the vive has the controllers all ready 'n'stuff

I have a (mostly) console-only buddy who will be having me build him a VR-centric PC this summer. The idea is to spare no expense (more or less) and go as big as possible to extend the life of it.
Once I have a good idea of how his machine is performing, I'll know whether to take the plunge myself.

After looking over VR stuff I've decided to go for next Gen. GPUs and second generation VR gear... Let a bit of dust settle.

I'm not going to jump in with 1st gen Vive or Rift VR but I am very interested in seeing the PS4 VR version

If you think I'm going to have fun interacting with a Bees Hive on my face?

Absolutely! Highly recommend looking for a meetup near you if you haven't tried it. At least then you don't have to invest, while still enjoying the experience.

Yes, it's not VR, but retinal projection may have better long-term promise than trying to cram more and more pixels onto a board. There is cost savings as we're basically still using cellphone screens, but at some point those won't need extra resolution so something else may be more practical. There's also lots of great review about the comfort-on-the-eyes and clarity of image with the Glyph, how those aspects were greater compared to the Rift. That was the case a year or two ago, though...

Yeah, probably with a DK2 and not the CV1. The CV1 is to the DK2 that the DK2 is to Cardboard/DK1.

Love the name btw :D (RP1 I'm assuming)

Very excited for my rift. Can't wait until march 28th. Every morning at work, oculus order status page is my fist visit to see if they have updated. Then check the oculus reddit.

Are you planning on getting a new video card any time soon? I imagine the 7950 will not be up to the task, even if heavily overclocked.

Heh, I actually wrote a book by the same name. To be fair, it was my first, so I never got the proper marketing done for it, but I continue to use it for VR things. That, or Artemis.

Actually just got a new GPU! Specifically, the Sapphire Tri-X Fury. To say that it's a tad large is an understatement (see attachment)

I will say that it is fantastic though, and I'm loving it so far. Still got 27~ days before I have to return it, so good time to review it and see what madness I can push it through.

I am waiting for my kickstarted Glyph with clear understanding this is NOT a VR device and not a competitor to OR. I treat it as an experimental media player and I am interested in the potential of retinal projection. Reported picture quality of Glyph is very good though there were some indications about potential issues similar to the projectors using micromirror chips (rainbows). What will be the most interesting is to know what plans Avegant has after Glyph, can they make platform with big field of view and VR support.
After evaluating myself the current Glyph positively I may be willing to fund another Kickstarter push for fully blown superGlyph. At this point I am commending Avegant for actual producing the Glyph which was very difficult development.

Note also that Glyph solution is not the only one for picture quality in VR. One could also use very high density OLED imagers similar to the ones used in digital camera viewfinders.

I really want to try the avegant myself, since I'm coming from a more VR background, so to me it seems weird that you're using the lenses to *not* get a high FOV. When are they coming out, again?

VR is not and will not be a viable product for a while. Its still in its infancy. Its like when Pong was first made mainstream. I'll wait another 5 years or so.

Eh, I'd call Pong more similar to what we had since Nintendo tried their hand at VR. You certainly can't compare the actual visual quality, and the actual style of play in VR these days is, you know, a full and proper game. Five years will definitely cement its position in the public mind, though.

IMO Virtual Boy is just not worth mentioning in the context of VR

Pong = Cardboard, Pacman = Rift/Vive...

Perhaps in 3-5 years we'll see something like the Super Mario Brothers of VR, bringing it into the mainstream and tons of homes.

I'm not particularly interested without a major hardware vendor providing support, such as a console maker, otherwise it's much too expensive.

I think it would be better for you not to try Glyph to avoid big disappointment :notworthy:. Glyph is NOT a VR device, it is a personal media player. Think about its viewing scenario as watching 60" TV in dark room from typical living room distance. Morever, Glyph is made by a startup funded by Kickstarter campaign and thus one can not put on it too high expectations. I was willing to support Glyph due to its picture creation technology. The problem with personal displays is that it is difficult to eliminate various screen effects: pixel visibility, pixel spacing visibility, screen surface visibility. This problem is evident in Oculus and other devices using standard displays. According to reports even with the QuadHD display (2560x1440) screen effects are still visible in Oculus. Glyph is using micromirrors in which pixels are micrometer size and pixel spacings are extremely small, one can see this when looking on the projection screen from micromirror projector, even when the projected picture is very big and one can see the pixels, spacings between pixels are very small. It means there should be no screen effects in Glyph and in principle absolutely perfect pictures should be possible. This is what I would like to test.

Another question is why the current Glyph has limited FOV. This is because the micromirror chips in the affordable price range only have 1280x720 resolution (one has to use two such chips, like in two projectors) and the available small size electrooptical kit is only for this resolution. There are micrromirror chips with the 1920x1080 resolution and even with the 4K resolution but their kits are much bigger and much more expensive. This of course does not preclude making next generation Glyph with higher resolution and bigger FOV, it would only require much bigger investment. In this sense the current Glyph is just a proof of concept for a future device.

It thus seems that the right eye-display technology for VR is with using very miniature displays having extremely small pixels. This can be done with micromirrors like in Glyph or with miniature OLED displays like the ones used in the viewfinders of mirrorless cameras e.g. from Sony.

Glyph is in production now and shipments started, should be widely available soon but it is too expensive to become popular product.

I'm waiting for sure.
There is a lot of new hardware and software tech that is soon to be available.
AMD Zen and Polaris. Vulkan, Plus I expect the cost of VR headsets to drop because of more competition entering the fray.
I'm just not going to invest in hardware that will pretty much be outdated very soon.

Part of the reason I built the new system in my sig is to be ready for VR. I will wait and see how things shake out at t he start, but I'm excited to see how thinngs are by the end of the year/beginning of next.

I'm ready and waiting. Preordered my Rift for a June ship date. I'm waiting to read some first had reviews of CV1 before I consider switching to the Vive.

If the rumors prove true about nVidia's new offering I might upgrade my video card and sell my GTX 970.

April can't seem to get here fast enough. Both Frontier and Oculus just announced today that Elite Dangerous will have full/native support released at the end of this month with the official launch/release of the Rift CV1! Really stoked that they finally stopped being quiet on the subject! Plus expect a bunch of other developer announcements to follow soon leading up to launch... Should be lots a really good/original content around right at launch... Unlike other significant tech hardware product launches in the past.

I am going to wait. I like the Ouclus Rift. I do not want to spend time (Valve Time) with waiting for what they want to do with their steam machines and their customer service.
Others are coming into the ring, and competition will help push things forward. My gaming app would be Final Fantasy 7 remake in VR (SOLD)

Whilte I'm going to wait to see how things shake out for the Rift/Vive, I still want something soon to play with.

I just ordered a Samsung Gear VR and upgraded my phone to an S7. One of my classmates brought in his Gear VR and showed me a few demos. That was pretty cool so I decided I had to get in on something now. Hopefully I'll have my stuff in the next week or so and I can play with it.

I've played around with smartphone VR. Not the Samsung but some of the other brands. My conclusion is it is "Getto VR". They are OK but not really a good representation of a real VR experience.
But the up side is there are several other real VR headsets in development with much more reasonable price points than the Oculus or the Vive.

I'll add to this and give my experience. I've tried Cardboard solutions and they are pretty terrible - fun and cool for a few minutes, but laggy and not great overall. The Gear VR is much, much better as it has built-in sensors and much better optics. Using mine with the S7 and it is worlds better than Cardboard. With that said, I can't wait to experience "real" VR on my Rift/Vive.

My buddies Gear VR had pretty good response. The resolution is noticeably low, but for $100 it was very acceptable.

I am most certainly ready for VR. My Rift probably won't ship until July, so I may be buying one on HardForum when they start to appear. I view it as a really nice monitor\TV, so the price doesn't seem bad at all. I have a good few games I really want to try and it was nice to see some of the game pricing recently in the newest Oculus video.

The wife and I ordered both the Vive and the Rift...we have used my DK2 for quite awhile ...needless to say , we are ready

I had my preorder in for the Rift within the first couple of minutes of the countdown reaching zero....woulda been in the first minute if it weren't for the massive amount of traffic bogging down the servers. Hoping I get filled with the first batch and am lost in a haze of VR at the beginning of April.

Ordering Playstation VR tomorrow! Soooo fucking ready for VR. Been dreaming of this shit since I was a kid.
