I just stumbled off a Microcenter Warm deal:
AMD AM1 5350 $39.99 plust 40 off an AMD motherboard or 3850 $29.99 plus $40 off a mobo
Micro Center - Computers and Electronics

Stock for AM1 boards is pretty low in Richardson TX

Combo price does work with other AMD boards, so might be worth while if you are needing a board $10 off and free cpu ;)

As far as the AM1, basically Atom level chips with very basic APU, but would make a nice HTPC client type of box.

This cpu is actually OK for basic stuff. I bought a Sempron 3850 that has a single threaded score on cpubenchmark.net of 512, similar to an Athlon XP 2200+ or a Celeron 2.26ghz/Pentium 4 2.2

I think the deal is for "compatible motherboards". With an SSD this boots Ubuntu with OSS graphics in maybe 10-15 seconds -- it's pretty quick & works fine as a web browsing workstation.

Yeah the deal is for "compatible" boards, but just try to add the item in the cart and you will see the discount, just have to pick up locally. Intel boards are a no go ;)

I have the Athlon 5350. I use it to run a a Hyper-V server with pfSense. Seems to work pretty well for what it is.

In the past this has worked with open box motherboards as well. But only in store, if you try to add open box online it will not give you the discount. Just check in store with someone first. I know in the past this has worked. YMMV.

I've not bought a combo there for a while but remember that it did work back when they had similar sales in the past.

I make a weekly trip to Microcenter since I have about 90 minutes to kill every Thursday evening (my oldest has dance lessons and it is a haul from the house so I stay on that side of town). Anyway, I love going through the open box items just to see what I can find. In the past month I have snagged three AMD motherboards for less than $10. I scored a GA-78LMT-S2P socket AM3+ board for $9, and a pair of GA-F2A55M-HD2 socket FM2 boards for $6 each. I've noticed a large number of Gigabyte boards in plain white boxes that come with no accessories. It looks like Microcenter has some sort of arrangement to buy returned and/or repaired boards from Gigabyte. Mine are stickered "Repaired and Tested" on the boxes. I didn't have a need for any of these but for the price I could not pass them up. Just a tip for those who live near one, something to keep an eye out for.

As far as the bundle discount for buying a CPU in general, I can also confirm that in-store you will get the discount on open box motherboards. The price will not go below zero though. I've never tried to buy a board that won't work with the processor I'm buying, but as long as you stay within AMD or Intel I suppose it would work because the discount dollar amount is the same (presently $20 for Intel and $40 for AMD).

In the past, the Pentium G3258 & MSI Z97 PC Mate was a steal for $80-90. I think the best deal at the moment, in terms of bang for the buck, is an A6-7400k for $60 and either an MSI or Gigabyte A68 based FM2+ board ($5 AR for MSI or $9 for the Gigabyte, when bundled). For less than $70 that makes a great web surfing and office use PC, or a capable HTPC that can handle light gaming. Add in 8GB of DDR3, easy to find for $30 or less, and for a total of $100 you have everything necessary to replace an aging system.

Man, whenever I go to the Microcenter in Minnesota/St. Louis Park, all the open box stuff is only like $10 off. Can never find any good deals there.
