Before I buy the last...do you see any red flags.

I almost always try and build bang for buck.
I'm not going to OC this time and I only play a few games (GTA5, Rome TW, Just Cause2, SC4 to name a few)
Mostly used for Photo editing (lightroom), Oracle VM, and Handbrake, along w/ typical everyday low impact stuff.

Some parts I have already purchased over the past year when on sale.
Such as:
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Superclocked Video Card
Power Supply: SeaSonic 650W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: Asus BW-12B1ST/BLK/G/AS Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer
Monitor: Dell U2412M 60Hz 24.0" Monitor (Had for a few years now)

What I still need to buy:
CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor ($150 @ Microcenter)
Motherboard: ASRock Z97E-ITX/AC Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard ($129.98 @ Newegg)
Case: Fractal Design Core 500 Mini ITX ($59.98 @ Newegg)

Do you see any compatibility/performance issues with this setup?
Would it make more sense to go with an i5 6500?

Thanks for your time and input!

I'd go with a Skylake setup and the cheapest GTX950 you can find. Might cost you another $100 or so, however you would get a much better GPU and newer platform and CPU tech.

Though if you already bought that RAM, you are basically stuck with it now and can't move to Skylake which only works with DDR3L and DDR4... And hopefully that 750 Ti was super cheap wen you bought it. DDR4 is down to $60 (on sale) for 16GB. There is a bit of lost value risk when you buy parts to stockpile and don't use them right away.

Thanks for your fast reply.

I'm using all the parts I bought in my current pc (except for the PSU). This way it's less of a waste and they aren't just sitting around. So yeah, I agree don't stockpile. The 750TI was 90$ about 9 months ago. I'm very happy with the 750 right now in my current system.

Yes, I would need to purchase new DDR4 memory if I go w/ the 6500. However the old DDR3 can be used in another system and I am willing to pick the 6500 if that has a strong advantage over the i5 4590 .

Thank you for the Skylake vote.

Would you consider H97 / H170 motherboard if you're not OC'ing?
  • i5-4590 ($149.99), ASRock H97M-ITX ($99.99), $20 rebate on motherboard - all at MicroCenter
  • i5-6500 ($199.99) @ MicroCenter, ASRock H170M-ITX ($89.99) @ NewEgg
Quick calculation is an additional $120 is needed to go with Skylake (this includes the $60 for DDR4 RAM as Ocellaris mentions above).

If cost is not a concern, I'd go with Skylake.

If cost is a concern, I'd stay with Haswell.

Either way I think you'll be fine. In each case you still have future upgradeablilty to i7 processors. Go with the haswell and save a few bucks.

Yup. Don't get a blu-ray drive. Speaking as a person that bought a blu-ray burner, never used it. Completely worthless and a waste of money.
