My old living room receiver is dying, and I'm thinking about ways to juggle around equipment without busting the bank. However, I don't know too much about home audio - until recently I was too poor to have anything particularly nice.

I currently have a Denon DM40 mini receiver connected to my gaming PC via digital optical (http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/denon-denon-dm40s-cd-receiver-micro-system-dm40s/10383294.aspx). I have an Asus Xonar soundcard with optical out.

At the same time, I am using an old Panasonic home theater receiver with my TV and game consoles. It's driving a pair of Wharfedale 10.0 bookshelf speakers. These are 6ohm impedence and rated for 15-75w.

I could make the Denon system, even with its lack of inputs, work with the TV / game consoles. That would leave me with a computer without speakers. Would it be possible to get a simple amp with optical in to use the Wharfedales with the PC?

Alternatively, I have a NuForce uDAC that connects to a PC via USB, and that has analog RCA and coax out. (Right now I have my laptop connected to the Denon system with this.)

Basically, I'm wondering if there might be an alternative to spending a lot of money replacing my dying home theater receiver.

Any help/input would be greatly appreciated :)

It used to be possible to find a decent amplifier/receiver at a thrift store, with patience. Closer to affluent neighborhood is best.

Yeah, something like that seems like it would do the trick. I don't know much about amps re: sound quality tho. I was talking to a guy at a local stereo store today and he was suggesting a Denon receiver to pair with the Wharfedales, because they have a very warm sound and the Denon would compliment that nicely.
