Doom’s Box Art Is Terrible

Wait... people are actually going to buy this game?

The MP alpha turned me away from this game. Most recent trailer while it does show that the game is much better than 3 visually still didn't make me want to play the game.

If you can do better then step up.
Otherwise STFU.

This is always a horrible response to anything. Just because a man with no legs can't run doesn't mean he can't say that somebody isn't the fastest runner. A person's inability to do something does not mean that somebody else is the best at doing it,

I have a wall poster of this, which came with the original boxed game.
I never could figure out who the second marine was in the background, it doesn't look like a possessed marine.

I always thought that was suppose to be your co-op buddy coming to help you out.

I don't understand why anyone would complain over the box art, especially this. ???

Doom is a special moment in computer history. I think Doom was the gateway for many people to get into gaming. It wasn't the first 1st person shooter, but it was the most popularized at the time. Wolfenstien 3D didn't have that much popularity outside of the computer world, but with Doom you can a window of opportunity where not only did more people then ever have a computer, but because of the unique game engine this had, most people could actually play the game. Soon after, *real* 3D games came out and suddenly most people couldn't play the pinnacle games anymore, because they didn't have 3Dfx card.

So a result, Doom holds a special place in many peoples hearts. And as was custom during that time period, games came in needlessly big boxes with fantastic artwork that was not representative of the game play itself.

It would be like rebooting The Dark Crystal and using all computer CGI instead of animatronixs. Yes, it would look good, but that's not the point.

Or looking at the ranking of Yes album covers, the plain ones (from later years) get ranked low because of the precedence set during the uhhhh "experimental" years early on.

That is my understanding as well. Doom is probably one of the first games that many people experienced multiplayer on (anyone remember IPX :( )

No (yes).

Command & Conquer was a big user of IPX for a while, used IPX to join dedicated servers for Quake 1. I think Gamespy pretty much killed all of that off though.

Downloaded C&C demo on CompuServe  But I played Doom and Descent before that :D

Oh, I see what you meant. IPX was actually meant for local LAN it was literally a Coax (not even CAT5) plugged in from one computer to another. IPX was later emulated over the Internet which allowed for people to play "online", but initially it was pretty much 2 or 3 computers only for most peoples set ups.

Is it Doom or Fallout? The title says Doom, but the characters on the front cover says Fallout.

Who the heck cares?!?!?!? It's the gameplay that counts.

This is the definition of making mountains out of mole hills.

Well they gotta cater to the Call of Duty / Battlefield players.

Its the Cliche guy walking away from a fire or explosion type art. I agree, looks terrible.

.......I guess Pentagrams and Demons scare too many people now days too.

Actually now that you mention it, probably as much to do with being PC, "sensitive and family-friendly" as trying to cater to BF/CoD players.

I can do better. They should have asked me to do it. They everyone would have gotten Demons, Blood and Pentagrams instead of some robo sissy soldier who looks like he can barely hold that double barrel.

.....Although I bet our beloved Doom Guy is actually a woman now.

Somebody already did:

Futuristic "marine" decides that the only way to "kick ass" is to use a good ol' double-barrel shotgun. Hmm. Would rather have preferred said marine to be using AT LEAST an upgraded M41 pulse rifle (with attached grenade launcher) or a smartgun.
Wait, wrong game ...

Who cares about box art? As long as it states what it is and you can buy it.

Video game box art matters? What is this 1993 where we buy our computer games at Radio Shack?

The last box art that inspired this type of pedantic rage was the Mass Effect cover where it had to be reversible between FemShep and BroShep.

In the end no one gives as hit 6 months after the fact.

Meh... Everyone's a critic.

While it could be a whole lot cooler, I agree, it's also not something that exactly gets my panties in a bunch. There is some truly awful box art out there lol (I'm looking at you, megaman)

The nice thing about Steam is you can set whatever 'cover art' you want.

But if it weren't for this post no one would ever see the box art anyway :p

(because, you know, people don't buy games in boxes anymore)

The helmet shape is straight from the original art. The Shotgun is the iconic swiss army knife of Doom weapons. There's hell-fire behind him. Works for me.

The main MC's armor looks screams Samus to me. Put a gun arm on that and you could easily convince me it was a Metroid reboot.

It looks like the love child of Samus and the Master Chief.

While I agree it's boring I would point out that the halo armor is inspired by the doom marine in the first place ;)

Actually I think Doom get's credit for the entire genre pretty much. A simple but addicting concept, give a boy a gun and plenty of bad guys to pulp with good sound and satisfying recoil and you'll keep him glued to the screen with bruises and blisters on his thumbs for hours upon hours.

IPX is a protocol, so you can run IPX over CAT5 if you want.

Yep, it is it's own protocol, and you can still use it today (but almost no one does).

For playing older games over today's mostly TCP/IP networks, there are drivers for tunneling IPX over TCP/IP. This is what I think he is talking about.

While you COULD set up IPX for your local network (with some effort) you'd never get the IPX protocol to communicate WAN side, unless you used some tunneling, as the ISP's just don't use IPX.

Box art was always cool back in the old days. Fabio on the cover of Iron Sword. Even Atari 2600 games had some elaborate box art (Sega Master System had some odd stuff, however), but in game was much different. They were trying to set up the scene, the feel of the story so you could place an image of what it might look onto those dull single/dual color sprites.

Now, the in game graphics are amazing. The box art is less visual quality that in game. There's no real reason to do the box art other than for the artistic aspect of it. Some still enjoy it (I do), but it really doesn't matter. Has no bearing on the game itself. If anything, paying for an artist to go all out on box art would be a waste of money... People aren't basing their purchase on the art anymore.

I understand that. He made it sound like it was only over coax and not CAT5. As far as the TCPIP emulation for IPX I used to use Kali to play IPX based games over TCPIP.

It's Randy from accounting.

I see that you are right. I never saw anyone use IPX over CAT5. I guess by the time we moved to CAT5 and switches and stuff it was Windows days and we started getting used to TCP/IP. I think I was using the Coax probably till '98-99 or so if I had to guess.

I submit!

I worked at a place that used Netware for file and print services until 2005, each Windows 98/XP desktop logged in with a Netware client for Windows. Boss preferred IPX on internal network traffic as an additional security feature against Internet attacks.

I understood what you ment :)

I was also a Descent junky back in the day, as well as just about any sierra online games that came out.

I would've preferred art that showcased how this game is unique, like a bloodied chainsaw sitting next to some carved-up demon bits...

I like how he has a multi-million dollar hi-tech battle suit combined with a $100 double barreled 1950's shotgun his gramps left him when he died.
