I'm at the point I think my wife and I are paying for something that we don't use. Recently Sprint's insurance price has went from $11 to $13. Our plan includes 2 phones, so that's $312 each year we pay for insurance.

I'm kind of tempted to just purchase Square Trade insurance. The only con about that would be it wouldn't cover loss or theft of a phone, but we have never had to file one of those kinds of claims since we had cell phones, so I don't think that'd be that big of a deal. I guess Square Trade doesn't replace phone's either, but only fix them, and if they can't fix them then they give you money for a refurbished one, iirc.

My main reason to have insurance was for broken screens, but at this time and day, most screens are pretty sturdy and I haven't had one break on me in a few years now.

Anyways, do you have insurance?

EDIT: I'm an idiot and spelt insurance wrong in title, lol

I don't. I have an iPhone as my main device, so I have AppleCare -- it won't cover loss or theft, but it will take the sting out of any damage (due to accident or defect).

Carrier insurance has always struck me as... not a scam, but definitely a money grab. You're paying a lot knowing that you'll probably never make a claim. Think about it: in your case, you're paying the equivalent of a nice phone over two years. I'd try to find coverage that's more realistic so that you can roll the money into the phones themselves or (gasp) other things.

Nope. Waste of money to me. Not clumsy, never broken or lost a phone. Can afford to replace if needed.

Have spare phones, and between wife and I always have an upgrade available if needed.

Remember, insurance isn't there to help you. They exist to make money. You pay hundreds in premiums, a deductible for a claim, all on an electronic thats value is dropping like rock. And get a refurb phone in return.

I hear you, although I think we all say "but I'm not clumsy!" up until something happens. Sometimes you're just the victim of circumstances beyond your control.

I'll say this: if you buy a high-end phone unlocked, an extended warranty or insurance is probably a good idea. You don't want to drop a lot of cash on, say, an iPhone 6s Plus and then have to replace it just because someone knocked it off the kitchen counter.

Nope. I'm not paying them $5/month to insure a $199 device. I've never lost a phone or broke one. Just be careful and responsible with your stuff. Its cheaper and better in the long run. Think a bit about how you store and carry your item.

In pocket? Screen faces my leg. If it gets bumped it hits the case that covers the back of the phone and the screen gets depressed on the pants pocket fabric and leg. Much better than the screen getting hit. Set on table? It's face down so nothing can get dropped on it. Basically don't be stupid and you don't need insurance. Then you need to consider cost vs. risk. $5 per month ($60 per year)for something that costs $199? That's outrageous. In 3 years its like buying another damn phone. I pay $215/year for $300000 in home insurance. Phone insurance is for suckers.

Pretty much this in a nutshell. You pay for insurance then still pay a $200 deductible, get a used phone in return. Waste of money and Verizon or whoever laughs all the way to the bank.

The insurance company is getting a broken used phone, why should they give you brand new phone? Trading in a used broke phone for a used working phone. Should have taken better care of it. Works the same as any other insurance.

Complete waste of money.

I've had cell phones for the past 15 years and have never broken or lost one yet.

How much would I have spent if I payed my carrier or other insurance company for all that time?

Just get a good case and screen protector and make sure to not have the thing in your pocket when going to the restroom and you are pretty much good to go.

And besides, if you ever break or lose a phone you can just use a spare/previous phone or get a used phone until it is time for an upgrade.

It all comes down to the individual and the situation they're in.

I have insurance through my carrier for both my phone and my wife's phone. I have never dropped and broken my phone but I have a 4 year ol.d and an 18 month old. That is more then enough to make me want to keep my phone insured. Not to mention I'm on the grandfathered JUMP plan from T-Mobile so i can upgrade every 6 months. ;)

My wife on the other hand can't keep her phone from dropping to save her life. Need to replace it again as we speak...

Nope, gave up on phone insurance years ago during the HTC Touch Pro days.

With the cost per month and the $100 deductible, it just wasn't worth it.

I voted yes but then just dumped it today. $11 a month with a $199 deductable for a $180 phone through Amazon is a joke. HTC One m8 for Windows. If it was $900 to replace the phone, that might be different.

Have never paid for phone insurance and have no plans to. I have yet to lose or break a device.

I bought Apple Care for my 4S for $99 for 2 years with a $49 deductible. had to use it once when my brother knocked over my full cup of coffee on my phone.

With my 5S, I did buy Apple Care, but the deductible went up to $79. Didn't have to use it. I still have this phone.

I also had Apple Care with my iPad 3. Used it once for a warranty issue after the 1 year warranty was up. Speaker went out and was all distorted. They swapped out the iPad with another one.

I have 3 college aged kids .....so yes, insurance is a given.

My oldest thinks iphones are disposable.

Work phone gets insurance through the carrier. Pretty good too. Covers pretty much everything except a stolen phone.

Back when smart phones were a newer thing I had it on my blackberries. It was kinda a waste as you could beat someone to death with a few of those phones. I dropped my insurance when the monthly went up from either 5 or 7 bucks. I also laughed at the raise in cost for using the insurance(it is what 75 or 100 bucks now).

Now if you break your phone screen you have places all around town that can repair it. If you loose it you can buy a usable phone for the cost of the insurance replacement and a years worth of paying the monthly insurance costs.

With a few good options in the 300 dollar range out the door for an unlocked phone I'll buy one of them if I kill mine.

I have it for one sole reason: I am the person that, when it comes to technological devices, if I don't have the insurance on it, it breaks in a way that would be covered by insurance.

So I pay that money to keep away whatever powers of the universe are out there that would troll me in such a way.

Mind you, this doesn't seem to apply to service plans/replacement plans that retailers offer. Just insurance.

Nexus Protect on my 6P. I didn't plan on buying a case for it, as I hate how bulky they make them feel, and I was already buying a phablet that'd be going in a pants pocket.

I did find a pretty slim case for it though, but I plan on running this phone for at least the next 2 years, so I might as well be protected. That, and the Nexus 5 I used to have broke while it was sitting in my pocket.

Plus, even with the insurance, case, extra USB cables, and screen protector, it still came in way under budget (budget being my returned safety deposit from my old apartment)

I self insure by keeping my old phones. If I break the new shiny one (hasn't happened yet), I use my previous phone until the next phone releases. This has pretty much been Samsung Galaxy Note devices for me but that could change at some point.
