HGST Deskstar NAS 6TB HDD - $229.99

Well that's just drop dead tempting. I have the 4tb version of this drive and everything they say is true; it's hotter, but very fast. Curious as to if anyone else like these like I do. Good deal it seems.

I just bought 5 of the 4TB ones to put in one of my Synology boxes. I really like them so far. They are still new so we'll see how they fare in terms of longevity, but I don't expect any major issues. I wrestled with going with these vs. Reds but these have been going on sale lately, making them a solid buy.
 
that's a good price. But I already have WD Red Pro 6tb drives and I'm thinking I'll stick with those due to less noise and lower heat.
 
Good price. I put (4) of these in an 1815+ and they were louder than (8) reds. In a NAS, think I prefer reds since they are cooler, quieter, and spin slower. Not sure about HGST warranty process, but WD is painless and will cross ship with a credit card deposit. Just make sure to register your drives on their website.

Yes, they are. One of reasons why I specifically bought them, however I do have some of buyers remorse. These drives are LOUD. Running 5 6TB drives in my Synology and if I do a search operation and all the drives ramp up, the noise is pretty bad. My NAS sits right next to me, unfortunately. I think WD Reds would have been a better bet despite being (maybe) slightly less reliable. If I could relocate the NAS to a different room, it wouldn't be as bad. Just be forewarned.

I read up on the noise issue only after I had them in-hand, unfortunately. I would have returned them, but I didn't want to wait, as I needed to get my NAS up and running ASAP. I got them for $230 OTD on a BF special too.
 
Guys, faster drives have always been louder. It's the price you pay. Remember the WD Black? They are noticeably faster than the Blue and Green drives. They are also louder. Same for the Velociraptor.

Can you link to a comparison? The Red Pros are 7,200rpm drives like the HGST, unlike the regular Reds which are 5,400 rpm. I'd be surprised if they were much quieter and cooler, but if they truly are then maybe that's why they're so much more expensive (in addition to the 5 year warranty). I shied away from the Pros due to their price; I just didn't think it was worth it to pay ~$220 for a 4TB Red Pro when I could get the HGST for $140. When you're buying multiple drives, that difference adds up pretty quickly.

In my initial non-expert opinion I didn't really have anything to say on this because my boxes are in another room where it is cooler and not a lot of foot traffic in the house. Even then they are in a white box server so the fans never even let their noise get through during setup on the bench. I can see how you would be very aware of it, though, on something like a NAS. Can we then say hotter, noisier, but FAST? :D

The HGST drives are among the loudest hard drives on the market. User reviews usually mention the noise and also that they run hot. The Reds and Red Pros are both quiet (I've had both). Red pros are expensive though, no question about it.
