If this new start up is to be believed, a nationwide wireless broadband network is on the way, bringing cheap gigabit wireless connections with it. Hopefully this venture is a little more successful than Aereo.

Starry plans to launch a wireless broadband service called Starry Internet at a lower price than current providers. The company plans to roll out in Boston this summer and spread to more cities throughout the year. The eventual goal is to build out the service nationwide. If Starry's promise of delivering up to a 1-gigabit connection, or 10 times the average home broadband speed, pans out, it could shake up the broadband industry.

1 Gbps millimeter wave in the GHz range for clients but what's the internet backhaul, 5G?

So having just read the article, legal issues aside, the tech's biggest hurdle is the 39GHz spectrum. It says right there that the repeaters/towers will have to be placed every mile or so.

That pretty much limits it to servicing only densely populated areas efficiently. Places where land line connections will already be common? It might be able to fill some of the gaps that were left when Clear went out of business, but I believe the Clear Wireless systems had better reach between towers than that so can cover more area.

I guess if they can actually deliver on the 1GB connection speeds they'll cannibalize a whole lot of people from the land line connections. But what will latency and loss look like?

Quality of the connection is as important, or even more important, than it's theoretical maximum speeds. Simply being able to download a one off file fast is one thing, but streaming and real time access to a lot of things (not just games) will matter in the future. Whatever access methods we all use in the future we need to keep the quality of that access as high as possible.

It could be a whole lot of hops from a rural area to somewhere where they can get a fast connection to a backbone.

I'd gladly use it. Best I can get is 6mbps with a landline, for a good chuck of change too. So I already use LTE instead.

Also, cool starry bra.

The ISPs will find a way to kill it just as they do with any other competition.

Subcentimeter antennas?
One mile between towers?
I hope they have an inexpensive way to make that happen.

Someone already has it in for the Aereo guy. I liked that server - was a happy paying customer as it provided me with OTA better than I can get with an antenna.
Sigh, I'm not holding my breath on this latest venture. I'd love to see something like this roll out - if anything, just give us some vendor options.

Solar and wind powered towers/repeaters that are small enough to go on a typical house roof and only costs a few hundred dollars. If that were a reality this just might work...

That is what I am thinking.. if its small enough.
I would be happy to install one in my house, if it gets me discount on service or some such.
If they manage to integrate a repeater in everyone's equipment, that would be something good too.
What can I say, Good luck with this thing.
If it offered where I am at, I think I will subscribe.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the issue with wireless internet hasn't really been connecting the users to wireless access points but the wireless access points to the internet ... having high speed internet access points every mile would require a grid of fiber and hubs ... it seems like this would be even less cost effective than the existing mobile carriers who have their towers further apart than 1 mile

If all you do is browse the web and watch youtube this will be fine. However for those of us who latency is an issue, it is still wireless and still worthless.

We need to make them aware.

Man I wouldn't even bat an eye, I'd wear the bra if it meant getting off Comcrap's service.

So would OP.... Wait....

I think services like this need to break through and make some noise. At the very least, it brings competition and awareness of the shit alternatives. Like Google Fiber. In most (all?) places they've gone, the competition has tried to meet their speeds and prices. So, they cannot claim that it's too expensive or impossible to do.

I'm sure that this will get others to look at something similar, but have a 10 mile between antenna range, more coverage, etc..

Every major ISP are going to do everything in their powers to make sure this technology never sees the light of day.

If the government and tech proponents never intervened, we'd all still be paying $100 for dialup. In fact, Time Warner Cable in my area still charges ~$100 for 50Mbps MAX. We have no choice. ATT DSL is even more ridiculous.Surrounding area has Cox and they get up to ~200Mbps for half that price.

I'd be happy with mine if they got rid of dara caps. You wind up paying more if you watch more than 2 hours of netflix. They lost the cable TV revenue so they get thier money from data caps.
