I'm looking for a replacement for my mx518, since one of the pads is starting to shed away. This mouse is out of production and people are asking a pretty penny for it online. Back when i used to play MMO, the razer naga would have been interesting, but I'm not into those atm. I do not mind wired, I only require 2 thumbs buttons and I use more of a "finger" grip than a palm one. Any input on decent mices that do not feel out of place after a mx518 at about 50$US?

So, the mx518 is an old school optical sensor. I wandered the land of the laser mice for about 6 years before a friend who loved the mx518 told me about the G400s. Which is a similar body shape to the mx518, with a texture of the blue generation G5. But! It retains that amazing optical sensor. Just thought I would throw that suggestion out there. I highly recommend the G400s. It is truly great.

50$ CANADIAN too! Thanks for the suggestion

You are very welcome. I have to admit, it is the best gaming mouse I have ever used. I feel laser mice are too jumpy even at lower dpi settings, or high dpi and low sensitivity settings. The G400s is the closet thing to perfection in my mind.

used to use a mx518, loved it, owned 4 of them over time on all the computers. Upgraded to the g700 and g700s 3 years ago and OMG it's amazing. I have 4 of those now.

If you haven't tried yet OP talk to Logitech, the mouse is out of warrenty but they have the best customer service ever imho. They may send you another replacement pad, or hell another mx518. They've done it before for stuff I had 5 years out of warrenty.

I saw this and had to throw in my two cents.

I also think the MX518 was a stellar mouse. It's like the AK-47, the M1911, the Willis Jeep, the Zippo Lighter, the M2 .50Cal HB MG of MICE !

I have tried to find a suitable replacement and failed. I tried the Razer Taipan, the Logitech G502 Proteus Core, I even ebayed an old Razer Boomslang special addition that was updated as an optical USB version.

None measure up.

I suppose it's because I have been shooting too high, that I am mistakenly assuming that it has to be a hyped up mouse to reach the lofty perfection of the MX518. Perhaps the G400 is in fact the Grail I seek.

Am I a gaming Heretic for thinking that the pinnacle of Mouse perfection was reached 11 years ago ?

I do not good sir! I was a G5 guy. I bought three of them because I loved them so much. But after the third one had an issue I had to switch to the G500 in search of something that was different but hopefully better. I know have a G400s BNIB sitting and waiting in my closet just in case something happens to my current G400s. It is that good. By the time that I had came around on the optical is better than the laser I could not find a good MX518. My friend show me his G400s, and the rest is history.

You are not wrong, but I think all of the optical fans are a bit misunderstood sometimes.

I had an mx510, had issues with it after many years of good service. I replaced it with the g400, the g400 had its cord go bad after a few months. The cord is way too thin. Logitech sent me a g400s to replace it and I have had it for about a year now. The cord hasn't broken yet but the scroll wheel is messed up. Can't bring myself to get a new mouse because I love the physical dimensions of the mouse.

I had a MX518 for many years and loved it, but I spilled water on it earlier this year and the right click button no longer worked. I looked at all the new Logitech models but it seemed like there were a lot of reliability problems (cords and scroll wheels mostly like munkle mentioned). So instead I replaced it with one of these: http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-Rival-Optical-Gaming-Mouse/dp/B00G6IJ5QK

I feel like I do about the same in shooters with it, and it's actually even more comfortable than the MX518 for me. Obviously a lot of that will depend on your hand and how you hold the mouse though. The only downside is that the DPI button "only" switches between 2 DPI modes, whereas the MX518 switched between 3 DPI settings. I've been using it a little bit less than a year, but so far no reliability problems.

Bought a razer deathadder, a g400 and a g700s since they all had decent discout.
Settled for the g700s. I really like having no wire and the grip on this mouse is amazing. I really like the feel of the mouse wheel and @ 1600 dpi it suits me perfectly.

Absolutely f'ing love my g700's. Best mice I've ever used and the ability to go wired or wireless is killer. Weight is perfect also!

I replaced mine with the G600, but didn't like its tracking, and I didn't need all of the buttons.

Then I went for the G602. I always felt like wired mice tended to get caught on something, or just provide some extra unwanted resistance to my movement. The G602 has an optical sensor, some extra buttons for MMO's, and it's wireless. Plus the batteries literally last for weeks to months. I've had it for about half a year to a year now, and I've been pretty happy with it. It doesn't hinder me in FPS games, and it's overall an excellent mouse. Plus the number of auxiliary buttons feels just right. It's not too many or too few. 8 buttons with programmable functions. The only thing is that the side buttons are a bit too stiff. It's easy to move the cursor when pressing them, so nothing that requires spam pressing should go on them.

I got a Rival love it except the side buttons could be more distinct. I tired a proetus but found it too narrow.

The G500s is probably the most similar in terms of shape.

G400 for optical
G502 for laser

Umm, let us fix this for you.

The correct replacement for an MX518 is;
G400s if you want to closest thing to it.
The G500s if you want the same mouse with a laser sensor instead.

The 502 is not really like a MX518 at all. I know, I have one and hate it. It's too narrow and uncomfortable for me and I can't easily hit the thumb buttons without screwing it up.

There, I just bought a G400s.

Amazon had a terrible price, inflated for the win I guess. Newegg was more reasonable at $59 but I am noticing that Newegg seems to be shifting away from the warehouse type supplier and shifting to a model more like Amazon which is too bad if you ask me. I hate to think of Newegg as gone, but I think that they are not the company they used to be. The products I buy from Newegg are actually coming from other businesses.

I've longtime tried to find a replacement for my MX518 but still keep using it but I did buy a G400s as backup meanwhile I still could. I slightly bit prefer MX518 (first version with smaller plastic feet) because the mouse is a few grams lighter and the glide is slightly bit better for my tastes compared to G400s but they aren't that far off but still enough that I feel MX518 fits more my tastes.

I had to RMA my G400 due to a cord issue and they sent me a G402. I have no issues with it and I think I actually like it better. It looks like a weird shape, but when you actually use it it feels amazing. It is not very heavy either, which is something I like because I mainly play FPS.

G500s or G502 would probably be your best choices for a somewhat cost-effective replacement.

I have the g500s and recommend it. It is an all around solid mouse. It is virtually the exact same size and shape as the mx510/518/g5 mice.

Yes but it is a laser and not an optical sensor. There is a difference and I never gave it enough credit until recently when I realized that part of what I don't like about the G502 is the sensor itself. It's too precise, maybe it's too precise cause my mouse pad isn't right for it. But if it's that sensitive and if I did fine with opticals in the past, then a quality optical is all the sensor I need or want.

Had the mx518 for several years and it was great. Upgraded to the g400 and it was just as good as the mx518. Then I bought the g400s and got the double click issue within a year of owning it. Probably just a faulty one but said fuck it and bought a Corsair m65 RGB. Didn't think a laser sensor would be more accurate but this mouse kicks ass. Might go back to Logitech if they fix some of their QC issues. Reviews on Amazon are mostly positive but there are some negative reviews keeping me from going back.
