Hey [H], I have a 2010? MacBook Pro (2.4 Core2, 4 GB DDR3) and am wondering if I should upgrade to 10.11? I am currently on 10.6.8 and don't want to install the new OS on a computer that might not be able to handle it.

Thanks :)

I have a spring 2011 MBP that I've been updating regularly and it runs better than ever. I'm no expert on this, but as far as I know El Capitan was supposed to bring some nice performance enhancements to the platform, particularly for older machines.

I would say go for it. Personally, I'd get a low volume SSD and install on that.

The only issue I had with El Capitan was that they changed the way system services work and this meant that two of my favorite apps got "broken". MenuMeters and Soundflower. There are work around versions that are able to work, but it did cause some problems there for a while.

Thanks for the responses guys. I've never owned a Mac before (lie I had one in '96 with OS 7.5.2) so my familiarity is low.

It's a really minimal hurdle to enable trim again on an third party SSD in 10.11 anyway.

Both my machines are 'on the older side' yet run the latest OS without any performance penalties, of course, SSD's help with that.

Upgrade at least for the damn security aspects of it. 10.6 cant even run the latest versions of chrome or firefox. Specs wise you should be able to run 10.11 without too much issue. You will notice a change in performance, but not too bad. Just limit running to much in the background.

i have a 2010 mbp 13 w/240SSD and 8GB of RAM. i felt the move from 10 to 11 gave a bump to responsiveness. the one thing i do hate is that i use preview a lot for annotating PDFs and every release screws with the settings. i just need to bit the bullet and pay for a decent program.

I have a Mid-2009 MBP, with a 2.26 Ghz Core 2 Duo, with 4 GB of RAM, and I'm running 10.11.2 just fine. It gets a little sluggish with enough of my frequently used programs, all running simultaneously, but that was the case with previous versions of OS X anyway. I've thought about moving to 8 GB or RAM, but I just haven't wanted to throw any more money into this computer.

After my upgrade its was not enabled on a cheaper Muskin 256GB Model. Either way to the OP I went from a pretty old version of 10.x to the latest and everything in the upgrade went smooth. Best thing is to buy a SSD. If you have 4GB ram no worries as everything seems to run fine.

2008 MBP 15inch Late Model 2.4GHZ 4GB Ram.

I have a 2011 MBA with 4GB or RAM and 256 SSD.

Works just fine and have not had any issues with any of my apps. Keep in mind I do only have a 4-5 applications running at one time so I'm not taxing my laptop like crazy. Usually Office, RDP sessions, Chrome and Safari.

Good luck!
