G.SKILL TridentZ 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3000 + Free Ripjaws MP780 gaming mouse pad - $89

ideally you want the 14 cas latency ones.

Well.. (CL/(Freq-in-MHZ) * 1000) = speed in ns right?

So Cas 15 would be(15/1500)*1000= 10ns and Cas 14 would be (14/1500)*1000 = 9.333ns

Another option for the same price as the cas 14 would be Cas 15, 3200mhz. (15/1600)*1000 = 9.375ns

I am not sure the lower cas is actually worth the price difference though because as shown the speed makes almost as much difference as lower CAS.

I bought two of these dual channel kits for my X99 build. Work perfectly at rated speeds and in quad channel too.

Great deal, gonna take the plunge myself and find finally go with some faster ram. Shame the heatsink isn't the gunmetal like the 3200 version. Still nice, but the gunmetal is pretty damn sexy

dont have access to my excel sheet but those do see about right (he numbers)

At the same price the 3200 CL 15 would be comparable. I doubt either has enough of a difference to be better in anything.

It really comes down to how "perfect" you want your system and if its worth the money. The 9.3ns ones would be close to a speed that would make me not want to bother replacing the RAM down the road. If I had 10ns RAM and 7.5ns came out I would definitely replace it. but if i had 9.3ns or a hair lower I probably wouldn't bother replacing it for 7.5ns RAM.

All depends on your goals and wants. I personally am waiting til kaby lack now since i got a 4.8GHz HW. SKL isn't a whole lot faster with a HW that fast. So I am hoping DDR4 will continue to improve latency by that time.

Those CL 14 chips are brand freakin new. They didn't exist a month or so ago so we are already seeing it mature even more! I am hoping by kaby lake time we can see maybe CL 13 3000MTs RAM.

BTW common mistake. 3000 or 3200 is MTs and not MHz. Its double data rate ram so divide MTs by 2 and thats the MHz. Just lieek you did in your calc.

I have this kit. Very good IMO, runs rated timings, XMP works well, and oc's to about 3100mhz on stock voltage and timings. AT least my kit does

When does it make sense to upgrade from 8gb to 16gb these days?
Presume 16gb is really for video editors, etc. or heavy gamers?

Well, in my view it makes sense now that ram prices have dropped so much. 16 GB costs what 8 GB did 12 or so months ago.

not sure about you but on 8GB of RAM just browsing i get out of memory BS and 16GB i can just barely survive on with just regular windows with out doing anything fancy like extra caching or ramdisks

I love having 32GB or more but i can suffice on 16GB but its cramped and forces me to not get clever with various programs and settings.

I am a firm believer that you always buy the largers DIMMS and that would be 16GB DIMMS now. I was buying 8GB as soon as they dropped in prices. The laptop 8GB were 400 bucks when first released lol but i bought them when they dropped which was only like a year. Plus resale value and reusablility makes a big difference.

Lol I upgraded from 8 to 16 way back in 2011. Some games can eat up to 4-5 GB of ram all on their own and I like to leave my browser running which means my system is typically already using 5-6 GB before I even fire up a game. And Windows will put more ram to use if you have it.
