AMD has officially announced "Wraith", their new stock cooler

Meh on the lit logo. Going to be hard as hell to see in a system depending on if you have it mounted with the logo to the front or back of the case. Or is there a lit logo on both sides?

If it does a decent job and eliminates the need to buy a cooler then that makes their products more price competitive. Good coolers are > $50, so that's significant.

Can we get [H] to do a comparison of the 2 and also see how it fares against some of the good budget coolers like the CM212?

Not bad for a stock cooler. Those other boxed coolers were pretty noisy under full load.

Yeah, it makes AMD even more attractive for budget builds

This does not look like a $50 cooler to me. More like a good $15 to $25 cooler. Due to its size I would not expect it to be in the same class as a CM212.

AMD coolers have always been leaps and bounds ahead of Intel coolers - they actually cool the CPUs to acceptable temperatures at stock speeds under full loads unlike the Intel pieces of trash that have been of the same exact design for years and years.

The only Intel cooler that was worth anything was the nice tower heatpipe cooler that was sold with/for the 1366 extreme CPUs.

Is this going to happen with their current lineup too? That's something nice.

DUH larger slower fans are quieter everyone knew this at k6-2, can AMD build something to compete with intel in gaming cpus and quit wasting time and money on common sense cooling technology. 5ghz with similar ipc to the competition should be AMD's main goal!

Their older cooler was pretty much a Thermalright XP90. New cooler looks like the XP120. Which, for all intents and purposes, is a damn good cooler.

Both are horrendously loud. Certainly an audible improvement, but well above a threshold for tolerable IMO.

What are you talking about? They've become lighter, shorter, and even less effective and cheaper than before! :p

True, but they are still of the same exact fin/base/fan design.

I have a pile of them at home. Not sure what to do with them other than sell for scrap.

Building a flail with them might be a good idea though.

That's a bit of a stretch. ;)

Having owned an XP90, an XP120, The original TRU, and now a TRUE Spirit 120...this thing is at most on the level with an XP90. The XP120 has 5 heatpipes to this thing's 4, and it also has a heck of a lot more surface area.

The original cooler in the vid is the same one they've been using for 8+ years now (I had one with my Phenom 9850BE). It has a 70mm fan and 2 heatpipes. The XP90 uses a 92mm fan and 4 heatpipes. This Wraith looks like a 92mm fan and 4 heatpipes also, although the fan looks like a much thicker 32mm or 38mm model so it can run slower but have higher static pressure. If it were a 120mm fan, then it would be bigger than the typical heatsink mounting bracket and chipmakers tend to avoid doing that to ensure 100% compatibility with every motherboard and RAM selection out there.

Nevertheless, this thing is a massive step up from the previous cooler and I'm sure it performs really well.

The noise improvement is certainly nice, but I'm a bit concerned about the performance. To make it worthwhile it needs to be on the same level as the commonly suggested price/performance OC capable air coolers, while also including a competitive fan and thermal paste (those damn pads are the worst!). Otherwise, its yet another waste of money for both AMD and processor buyers.

If AMD can get it right then it is a non-trivial value improvement for Zen , meaning that buyers won't have to spring another $50 or more for a suitable cooling package to get a significant OC. That would be a nice feather in AMD's cap, but first we must see if Zen is truly competitive of course. I'm rooting for them for a number of reasons, but its hard to shake the skepticism.

Oooh this looks nice. Would be interesting on how well it cools and if the fan is replaceable without the means of zip ties.

Keep in mind both are running at 100%
Understood. But even so, the first fan sounds exactly how my FX processor's fan sounded, all the time. Light load, medium load ... didn't matter, it was embarrassingly loud. So to hear a reminder of that, then hear the second fan not much quieter, tells me cpu manufacturers (or maybe just AMD; I've never used a stock Intel cooler) still don't care enough about coolers and/or noise.

What's more, is we don't know how these fans will run in real world setups. My concern is that, despite the video claiming the fans were running at 100%, they wind up running too close to that in real setups so as to render that claim moot. Loud is loud.

Or, they may wind up running near silent, which would be excellent. :)

You can get that but not out of a stock cooler, Noctua has excellent range in silent HSF.

Two of my friends have a stock cooler 1 on older Phenom II other on Piledriver APU and haven't heard anything from them they don't game tho ;) .

Wow, really nice design for a stock cooler. This would finally be a stock cooler that I would not throw away. :p

i remember when the opteron w/heatpipes came out and i wanted one so bad.

this cooler has to be priced aggressively in the US. most people here seem to default to the CM hyper 212 for about $30 or the TX3 for about $20. unless AMD can beat these in terms of either cooling or noise, i dont see it taking much footing unless its prepackaged w/the cpu itself.

That's precisely what it is... As you can see in the article and picture in my post...

Reminds me of the AM2 Athlon/Opteron X2 heatpipe PWM HSF. Hope it's a good performer, like the one I'm mentioning was.

Looks like a good value, but I hope this isn't an indication that Zen will have especially high power consumption.

has nothing to do with Zen. It's a new cpu cooler for existing chips. It's probably due to reports of some of the Apu's running hot with the stock cooler. This would certainly fix that, and gives consumers a better overall product.

It wasn't a bad cooler at all for stock and sexy back then! Was pissed when gave it to my best mate and his PC was stolen. They were especially good considering the load those chips had stock... IIRC got a 40% OC out of the Oppy 165 on a scythe ninja rev 1 cooler.

I'm pretty sure that's the point of a stock cooler.

Thank you for the astute observation.

But if you did a little more critical thinking and research, you will notice it's being packaged with select chips, most likely fx series, and sold separately.

Btw naoon, I don't read German. When i read articles, I'd actually like to understand what I'm reading.

For reference.

Have a good day.

You didn't need to be able to read German to simply look at that picture for half of a nanosecond and see "FX-8370 AMD FX PROCESSOR WITH WRAITH COOLER" right there in your face. Next time don't be lazy and use Google Translate.

Have a good day :).

Anytime ;)

Ok, so it's not stock for everything. Neither was the old heatpipe cooler as it only came with higher end chips. I don't see how that changes its' stock-y-ness.
