Seiki SE42UGT - 42" 4K 60hz - Hhgregg - $221.61 shipped!

anyone using the wifi on the TV? It seems to keep losing the wifi settings.

Meh, 60C is no big deal.

44 is better. :)

@ebolamonkey. Download the latest WHQL driver and it fixes your heat issues even though the cards only overheat @94c.

Read this. Maybe it will help.

I saw that and read about it. Issue here is my vidcard is HDMI 1.4 HDCP compliant and DP is non HDCP. Only way to do a legit HDCP setup is to lose the capability of doing 60hz later or get a new vid card (not happening). It might make sense later when HDMI 2.0 is standard across all vid cards but I am okay with it for now. 30hz isn't bad if you just read off of the screen or watch Amazon Prime's recommended content.

I have no intentions of watching things in full HD anyways for this and my "bypass" is just to scale down the stream to about 1/9 of the size to be one of the nine blocks I have allocated with WinDOCK. At the SD level the stream looks HD to me as it is scaled appropriately for the window size. I have eight other blocks I can use to view other things. For real HD, I am going to setup a home projector system. :)

can anyone calibrate 4K and post the settings?

I know there is one already @1080p in the OP, but it looks horrible @4K.

Found backlight control in service menu. Quite happy with this thing.

Menu0000 / Others / Others / Power Menu

Thank you for this, sir!

How the hell did they think it would be a good idea not to have a user accessible backlight control?

Funny thing is the backlight control is really good in the service menu, it's almost like a hybrid between PWM and non PWM. Very minimal flicker even at super low backlight levels....

What makes you think that was for 1080p?

But I agree.... those settings seem way too bright and washed out to me....

I got the Club3D DP1.2 to HDMI 2.0 adapter today, this monitor is SILKY smooth at 60hz. Love it.

My old SE39UY04 had amazing color quality though (after calibration), really need someone to get a good color calibration on this model.

I thought I read somewhere he did it at 1080p.

Regardless, its horrible at 4K.

Sorry, didn't mean that to come off snippy or anything... I was just trying to make sure I didn't miss where he said 1080p. :)

Anyway, I got mine yesterday and got it unboxed this afternoon. I'm trying to get everything dialed in while using this thread and the overclock thread for reference.

Weird trying to get used to an MVA panel again after being on IPS for so long.

My SE39UY04's colors were WAYYYYY better than my Dell IPS's, now thats the opposite lol. Cant wait to get this thing calibrated.

I saw this on another forum and it seems to look much better than default.

Menu - Picture - PC Advanced Settings:

Red Gain - 56
Green Gain - 45
Blue Gain - 51

Service Menu Curve Setting:
Everything at default

Service Menu Color Temp:
Warm
R-Gain - 1120
G-Gain - 900
B-Gain - 820

anyone using the wifi on the TV? It seems to keep losing the wifi settings.

when I had it, I could never get the wifi setup. My wi-fi password has a lot of weird characters, and in the seiki menu they didn't have | so could never enter the password.

Still a good deal for a 4k panel.

even if the panel is a baddie ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Seiki effectively crippled the set by having the firmware convert the signal internally back to 4:2:2 before outputting on the panel.

They also blocked in firmware accepting YCbCr 4:4:4 source signal at 4K reso despite supported in the EDID, which in theory can be displayed by the panel directly without conversion. So the only working options at 4K are to send RGB 4:4:4 or 4:2:2, and its default downsampled to YCbCr 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 by the monitor.

Its better to keep this thread going for a general chat about the promo and monitor, and the one in Display for more technical exchange without usual back-n-force "impressions" exchange. :)

Ended up buying this online and picking up in store. The price tag in store still showed for 249.99. It rang up at 279.99 they adjusted the price for me and still kept the 10% discount. Seems like they didn't get the info to update the price from what the manager told me. May be of some use for anyone looking for this tv still and are near an hhgregg.

Regarding Settings:

This TV has a huge variation in settings. You cannot expect to get numbers from one person and have those exact settings work for you. I will discuss this in more detail in the display thread on the SE42UGT.

When I bought mine last weekend, it was $279 in store and $249 on the web, they lowered it to the web price for me.

I just contacted h.h gregg about the damaged TV. They got it back yesterday but will only refund my purchase NOT send a replacement. They apparently have replacements but won't send one out for products they shipped damage. This makes no sense to me and I'm more than a little annoyed.

Wow, you're luckier than I am. I've been trying to get an RMA approved for mine for 8 days now (it's got what appears to be a speck of dust or dirt or something under the screen that covers part of about a 5x5 pixel area...wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't right near the center of the screen). Goddamn savages take like 2 days to respond every time I send them new information. Story is looking the same, though. I've clearly specified that I want a replacement like three times now and they just keep talking refund. They did offer me a $75 partial refund if I'll just keep it, but no way I can live with that damn spot there.

I picked mine up last night but haven't had a chance to open it. I'm hoping I have better luck than the last couple of posters...

They hit mine with a forklift before they even shipped it. Completely shattered the upper right corner of the screen. The damage to the box makes it obvious what happened. I can see find no excuse for this behavior. If you ship out a damaged product you should replace it. The representative on the phone said she was passing along what she was told to say. I asked to speak to this person; she ignored my request and said a supervisor would call me in next five days. She was away consulting with someone a couple of times so I don't know if was speaking directly with a supervisor or passing along precanned policy.

Classy. Sounds like par for the course for hhgregg, though.

I've got a store about an hour away. Think I'll just take mine there and see if I can get it replaced.

If it makes you feel any better I got mine in absolute perfect shape so there is hope out there. Unfortunately for me I can't get used to the 4:2:2 and Seiki is basically just ignoring all requests about it at this point. The input lag seems to be more than the 24ms reported earlier as well.

So for you it feels like a no go for gaming purposes? Is that what you tried on it?

Works fine for gaming for me, definitely less lag than the LG TV it replaced which was around 50ms lag.

If you don't set it up right (enable HDMI 2.0 EDID in settings, PC Mode picture preset) you'll definitely have a bad input lag due to processing delay.

The VA gamma shift took a bit to get used to again after using an IPS panel for so long, but the much improved contrast helps make up for that.

Does it perform like a $2,000 TV? Hell no...

Is it a good deal for $250? Absolutely. Even if I didn't use it with the PC it would make a fantastic display for TV, movies, or gaming again due to the deeper blacks.

Newegg reports say majority of customer returns are good working products. These folks just didn't know how to correctly set them up, or wanted to try a different model, but claimed damage or defects to get free returns. Newegg then is left with a choice to repackage it and sell to the next buyer as "open box" for less, or ship it back to China for refurbishing and repackaging. It comes to plenty of money lost for nothing, and they transfer losses upon new buyers by raising all prices store wide, but given sales drop after holidays it doesn't always cover the losses.

The other part of the story is, product makers loan inventory to Newegg, and give the merchandiser large discounts on their inventory stored at Newegg warehouse during major holiday sales. When a buyer returns a product 3 weeks later, the same models with discount code on the box are already gone. Replacing it with a regular priced product is direct loss for the seller, especially when multiplied by huge amount of returns after major sales season. They simply can't afford it, its much cheaper to refund.

This TV has a relatively large box, a mail carrier would never leave it at one's house unattended. Its a receiver's duty to check and decline damaged merchandise at carrier presence, unless the defect was hidden, which is hard to proof in case of claimed forklift damage. So from the seller's prospective, the buyer is at fault. I just look from aside at this story, no personal opinion. But if the defect was hidden, its a different story. I've seen similar claims on other forums of the screen physically damaged and packed into a new box, though it sounds a bit unusual for a large manufacturer to allow it on an assembly line... only to have the product later shipped back to China. But I guess floor workers can do it to cover up damage and avoid deduction from pay. Outside of it, any such damage would be seen on the box. In real life anything can happen, I faced cases when a seller shipped repackaged item in a broken box to shift losses onto a mail carrier expecting buyer's refusal to accept & insurance claim. So if you didn't play their game at receiving the box, then... in their view you're at fault. :D

I don't know what mail carrier "would" do but I know what they did do.
This was a UPS drop off at my home. Not only was it not signed for they didn't even ring the doorbell. We are pretty far out in the country. There was a document attached to the delivery stating that because of the price of the product a signature was not required. I can't verify what caused the damage or where in the chain it occurred I just know there was a (reasonably obvious but not glaringly so) ~3x1/2 inch slit in one corner of the box that corresponded with a dent in the surround of the tv that resulted in a shattered screen.

This is not something I should have to waste hours trying to correct.
Something happened during shipping or warehousing and it was ignored or overlooked. Let UPS and hhgregg work it out they have insurance to deal with these problems.

But all that aside. I spoke with a supervisor. After some civil back and forth discussion, they agreed to send out a replacement. I'll let you know if and when this happens.

I'm really surprised that a signature wasn't needed for the TV. When I got the UPS update that the TV was on its way to me, I had the option of removing the "Signature Required" tag, which I didn't. I paid $270 for mine (had to pay for tax), so I don't know if the tax was factored into the signature requirement.

You were lucky then. Generally its between you and the mail carrier to file a damage claim, have them the item inspected at your place, and take it back for free as it becomes the insurance company property, or at times leave it as a gift if not recoverable. But the shipper is usually out of this loop, since at dispatch a mail carrier is expected to check the items aren't visibly damaged.

The UPS driver came back the following day. We had a discussion. I offered to show him the damage. He took the package without examining the actual tv saying they would inspect it at local the distribution center, the damage would be verified and the package sent back. This is what happened.

I had two of these delivered on consecutive days. Neither required a signature each one came to under 250. Though bought and and shipped as two items in a single order perhaps they were insured individually and fell under some price threshold.

I had two delivered the same day. No signature required either. Here's the issue and it is a cultural one.

For anyone who's been to Japan you will know what I am talking about. Customer service in this country (USA) is totally different than that of Japan. In Japan, people rush to come and help you and people care about doing their jobs well. You got great service at restaurants and it is impolite to tip. You lose your wallet and phone on the train and it magically finds its way back to you with no money missing (friend left a couple of thousand USD equivalent yen and not a single bill take). People here slay each other for J's. You hang $10k out the window and expect to be shot dead. We get higher relative pay as compared to most developed nations and have the cheapest prices on consumer electronics.

I know friends who've worked at FedEx and UPS and know how those packages, regardless of content or "fragile" sticker, are handled. They are doing shift work and getting paid very little to do so and they come to work tired and go home tired. Do you really think they have your package in their best interest doing a job like that for years on end?

As mentioned, it is a probability game. I had NewEgg send me a TV that was totally smashed. You are assuming consecutive events to occur with high probability of no damage for you to receive a undamaged product at your front door. In today's world and current culture and work ethic this is not going to happen. When your delivery guy knows that you are the last stop before going home they will not give two shits about inspecting your package in the evening hours light before high tailing back to the distro point to get off of shift.

For all who received undamaged TVs be thankful and to all those who received damaged TVs please try to file claims with the carrier and engage the retailer to move forward. I highly doubt these shipments are insured. I'm very glad to have functional TVs and will probably re-enforce the packaging when I move with additional padding.

Colorful reality picture piece. HDR with a lot wider gamut than this Seiki TV delivers. ;)

However, with value $200+ all these TVs are insured, and each and every damage must end up with filing an Insurance claim with the carrier and direct complaint with their VP, if we want this virtual reality changed, in particular for YOUR own deliveries, since they are likely serviced by the same driver and truck load laborers night after night.
