NVnews is no more

These past tech sites are like counting tree rings into the past. It's sad how everything eventually fades and dies. Maybe I'm being too sentimental. :(

I didn't pay much attention to these sites. The only one where I had an account was rage3d, but I long since forgotten my username and password, and I'm sure the email address I used to register is long since dead.

But regardless of that most of the names of sites others have mentioned are familiar. I used to visit them for news, and unofficial driver downloads.

Reading this thread inspired me to join the community. I was partner with mvktech some 10 years ago and provided most of the reviews and content. I was looking for tech news and tried to bounce over to NVNews today to catch up on things and was blown away by the news about Mike and his son and how things have changed over the years. Hard to believe.

Looking back, I had 4 different thermo-electric/water-cooled review boxes I built for reviewing and bench-marking over a decade ago and remember hitting 4GHz on the x6800 cpu with ease. I think my last review unit(s) were the evga 7800GTX in SLI mode on an old DFI LanParty using the 875 chipset and Corsairs "Xpert" ram with LED read outs on top of the modules... Miss those days...

Sorry to hear about Mike. RIP...

BTW what happened to MVKTECH? I forgot about them.

Johan (Mavke) ran the site for several years after I left. Not entirely sure what the circumstances were, other than I think it had something to do with a personal illness in the family. Was surprised to see that one go too. We used to rank 28k~34k back then.

Look's like you been around since those days as well... :D

well... yes. as a toddler :D:D

I used to keep a folder with "memorial" bookmarks when sites folded but it got to be too much. Love seeing the old names bandied about, though.

Man all the old sites from the 90's are dying :\

I heard about his son dying in Iraq about a year ago and figured that's why the site was slowing down. Tragic and hope the family all the best.
I still rock a horse and carriage 4 horse power and loving life.

BTW, I was here the day this site came online -- I cannot for the life of me remember that login or password. Kyle still around?

Sad but it happens...

Perhaps we should demand an [H] fitness routine. Gotta make sure Kyle, Steve, and co are in shape.

Does anyone know if Kyle still drives that black H2 hummer?

Used to go to that site all the time. I think it went down a long time ago.

I remember their lounge section was full of rabid right-wingers. I got banned for constantly calling out hypocritical posts. Good riddance.

You have been here for 10 years and didnt notice the [H] is very much the same? Much less rabid here in the normal forums but if you are a liberal i wouldnt bother buying a genmay subscription.

Whole lot more to Gen may than just the soapbox. Of course if you have thin skin and want to talk politics, no forum is for you unless the rest are sheep.

The sentiment is all over the forum. Just pointing out genmay they are let loose. I never said it was necessarily a bad thing but its pretty obvious if you read any thread even remotely polictical which way the majority at [H] leans.

There is a lot more political discussions around here than just the soapbox.

GenMay is OFF TOPIC. If you can't hold your own, don't label it one way or the other. I am in there on a daily basis band the pendulum swings both ways. Maybe you are just more sensitive when it does not swing the way you like?

Why do you keep trying to devolve it into personal insults? Making it about me? I dont have thick enough skin or im too sensitive...

I made a simple statement. It seems you are the one thats being overly sensitive with thin skin because you dont like whats being said. Never even said what way i liked, thats you making assumptions.

Well, it is his forum after all, so like, he can do what he wants and allow people to do what they want. ;)
If you don't like it, don't go there; but I have to say, you will miss out on all the Sextron and Cerulean action. :D

Also, it is unfortunate to hear than NVnews no longer exists.
Lots of old tech-related news outlets are going away, and I'm glad to see that [H] is still going strong.

No, insults. Those are facts. The Soapbox forum is not for the weak of heart. No shame in that. I don't go in there very often at all.

You made a simple statement as a fact and I simply offered some insight that you did not. Don't get all butthurt about it.

It has been a couple years since you had access, so I would suggest you don't really know what is going on in there currently. :)

I was on the busline the other day and overheard a person telling the driver he threw away his laptop since he got his iPhone 6 and iPad stuff. Idiot.

I wouldn't call him an idiot...some people just need a device to browse the web and not much else.

Then again this is coming from someone who has a:

Gaming desktop
Gaming laptop
Surface Pro III
Ipad Air 2
Iphone 6 Plus

But they'll pry my desktop from my cold dead hands before I give it up...

Car enthusiasts are working towards extinction as well, albeit more slowly. Young people these days don't care as much about driving, let alone the cars themselves. Getting one's license isn't the big life event it used to be for a lot of kids.

And young men today are as frickin' clueless as any woman (sexist, blah, blah) when it comes to knowing how to do basic automobile maintenance and repair.

tends to happen when you have no reason to drive anywhere these days.. almost everything we use to drive to as teenagers is available on the internet along with public transportation being so much easier to use then it was even 15 years ago.

and screw working on modern cars. give me a 60's or 70's car and i'll be able to fix it without thinking, the crap that's being produced now, no thanks.

Thats pretty pathetic that you wouldn't want to actually wouldn't want to experience something in person vs watching it on a monitor/screen.

As for Public transportation...you can't beat going when you want and leaving when you want instead of being a slave to a train/bus/whatever schedule. It has its place, but most often then not its inconvenient.

As for 1960/70 era cars...they get horrible gas mileage, aren't safe in accidents, muscle cars of the era are beat by todays family sedans with V6 in them, break all the time and generally are pretty raw/crappy vs what you can buy today.

A car today can run to 150K miles with no issues outside of changing oil/brakes/tires and other wear items. Then I wont even go into tuning (esp if you have a turbo engine) where 2-3 minutes of reflashing your ECU can give you an extra 70-100HP.

I dunno about you, but I'd much rather have a 2015 Mustang GT vs a 65 Mustang GT for driving around with as a daily driver. Its faster, more comfortable, and safer overall.

Hey man, if you got a problem that Soapbox isn't politically correct enough for you that's on you.

Fun fact: Rest of the world isn't PC either so don't get lost in lalala fantasy land.
