Hi there,

I know there are a ton of threads out there about updates and Windows 10, however I don't know if my issue strictly falls into any of the current answers.

I am presently on a slow 2.5meg connection for the foreseeable and I have set updates to 'deferred' and such so that they only download when prompted, that being said, it still regularly checks for updates which causes issues when someone is playing a game online or watching a stream.

Is there a way to outright block or turn off Windows updates, rather than simply deferring the download of them?

I think you misunderstand what Defer Updates means. That only means they won't be installed as soon as they are released, it may take a few months. You still get the same updates just later than everyone else.

If you have Windows 10 Pro you can use this guide to assist setting a GPO to force Windows Updates at specific times.

There's also a setting under Advanced that allows you to set how Windows Updates are delivered. Disable the option to share with computers on the Internet. Sharing between computers on your Intranet would not impact the 2.5Mb connection but may help. It only affects other Window 10 computers.

Metered connection doesn't stop it checking for updates - this is already turned on my machine.

Every time my machine is turned on, 10 maybe 20 minutes later it starts checking for updates and regardless of what's on my screen it will minimize it and show me a big blue takeover bar telling me updates are available. This is very annoying and intrusive.

EDIT: Disabling the service may work - I'll have to give it a try.
