What We Learned About SSDs In 2015

I wanted to make a quick post to say thank you very much for correcting w00t69's post. I took his word for the truth and almost entirely wrote off Intel SSDs because of it. That's why I love the [H]ard so much! Because of honest posters like you.

Take EVERYTHING you read on the interwebs with a grain of salt.
Do your own research instead of trusting blind faith, this is technology not theology :D

Intel does have, on older drives, a preventative measure that would cease writes but still let you read the drive. From what I know its still there but I haven't ran into it in so long I forgot about it.

Also Intel is one of the only manufacturers that loads their consumer drives up on extras, especially power fault protection! :D

Of course SSDs are not the "Magic Bullet" many people (and marketers) think they are. Sure there are applications where they excel at, and others not so much. Everything is application specific and it requires knowing what you need with whats out there and picking a technology that fits the requirements otherwise you are throwing money & time away... If everything were solved by a single product, we would all be using it, but we know how absurd that idea is because we are all different.

Personally, I have benefited greatly from adding a SSD to my system with the things I do (heavy gaming, 3d graphics, image manipulation, audio work, php "programming", etc). My girlfriend on the other hand got a SSD for her system and loaded a fresh win10 on it, and she seen very little change in her day-to-day activities. Shes not [H] on machines or their requirements though.

What did I learn about SSDs in 2015? They got cheaper. I learned a long time ago not to bow to marketing speak, or a half arsed "review" with no solid real-world methodology. Hard data such as Data sheets and/or specifications are the "marketing" I look for.
 
This guy thinks that SSDs are a poor choice for data centers, but I’m not sure his argument is entirely legit…

…the unpredictable latency of SSD-based arrays - often called all-flash arrays - is gaining mind share. The problem: if there are too many writes for an SSD to keep up with, reads have to wait for writes to complete - which can be many milliseconds. Reads taking as long as writes? That's not the performance customers think they are buying.

I sold millions of dollars in AFAs last year. This guy is nuts. I can give you 200K+ IOPS at sub-ms latency with mixed workloads on most AFAs now. That covers 98%+ of work loads. No one cares if a read takes as long as a write when they are both at 300 micro seconds.
 
Now imagine if if takes milliseconds on SSD's... how long would it take on spinning rust! :)
