Seiki SE42UGT - 42" 4K 60hz - Hhgregg - $221.61 shipped!

Do you have a camera capable of getting us a close up (macro) shot of the last two lines in that image?

From what I understand the TV EDID says that it supports 4:4:4 chroma, but the TV itself converts it back to 4:2:2 before it's displayed. So I'd love to see a picture of your set doing successful full on 4:4:4 chroma....

I'll get a picture up asap.

Found backlight control in service menu. Quite happy with this thing.

Happy here.. the only caveats I've encountered (from an otherwise perfect OOB experience) are lack of a backlight control (Seiki 39 had one in one of the hacked firmwares) and I need to run OSX and Windows using separate cables.

Input 1: Hackintosh with DVI cable w/ HDMI adapter on the TV end.
Input 2: Windows with HDMI cable.

Hackintosh wouldn't work with HDMI EDID 2.0 enabled (gives No Signal) using the standard hdmi cable, but worked fine once I jig'd up DVI. I blame Apple and/or the Nvidia web driver.

I've had the Seiki 39", Quasar 42" (4:2:0 60hz, it sucked), and 27" and 32" 2560 LCDs. As long as you've got HDMI 2 this Seiki is the real deal.

*edit*

My fancy Redmere hdmi cable was the cause of the Hackintosh not working. Replaced it with a $5 crap cable and it works perfectly. No more DVI adapter and no more switching inputs.

That's not necessary. The text and vertical hashes are all clearly there in his picture.

I'm sold. Now, what's this 10586 update and where do we get it?

I believe he was talking about the Windows 10 1511 Build 10586 since he was installing W10 for testing. I currently have the UGT as well but my 4:4:4 test does not look like that, I am def only getting 4:2:2.

Wow, that looks really good.... except I can't really tell, it might not be 1:1 (it might be zoomed). Sooo tempted to order one of these and sell off this new LG 43UF6430 (WRGB panel).

Has anyone aside from the OP been able to test the response time? This LG is around 50ms in HDMI-PC mode which isn't absolutely terrible, but isn't great either. If that 24ms quoted in the OP is really true that's fantastic....

Hmm, that's unfortunate. A Windows update isn't magically going to make something work that's disabled in the display firmware.

Hmm, good point. pbassjunk, can you confirm that image is 1:1 (100%, not zoomed) with the display at native resolution?

Ahhh what the hell, I just ordered one.

Even without 4:4:4 chroma I have a feeling that this is going to be better than the LG I have now both in terms of picture quality and response time. I'm a little worried about quality and reliability but I guess I can opt into a SquareTrade warranty or something. And at this price if it goes tits up in a few months I won't shed too many tears.

Best part is I can probably sell this LG 43UF6430 for more than I paid for it on Thanksgiving day and even if I only get what I paid I'll still come out ahead.

And the LG isn't horrible, but the more and more I use it as a PC monitor the more and more I'm convinced that the extra white subpixel and the arrangement of subpixels does extremely weird shit for white balance when using it as such. It's still a great set especially for movies and games...

argh.. so of course the jpeg makes it look worse. I hope everyone has the same experience. I've got my old (from 4 months ago) 32" 1440p korean lcd next to it and while the colors are better tuned on the korean, the content looks the same.

I believe that is only in PC mode. In other modes, the response time is really bad according to a user test on the OC forum thread linked earlier.

I can concur that input lag is bad in modes other than PC Mode but I don't think you would want it in any of the other modes for PC in the first place. After having it for a few days the lag is PC mode is actually not bad at all.

Decided not to buy one of these TVs so here is a code for someone: HOWDY3GNQV

Yeah, why wouldn't you want it in PC mode? Is there some other caveat to PC mode that I'm not aware of?

I gather that most of us here are going to use this (at least partially) for PC monitor duties.

Sure, like most other TVs PC mode is going to disable certain adjustments (color, etc) but most of those adjustments can be done in your GPU control panel anyway.

Yeah, it really looks like OSX or whatever you're using is not presenting that at 1:1 - it's being zoomed somehow or some way.

Here's an example of what we're looking for:

900x900px-LL-7e4a66ea_IMG_7839.jpeg

This is what a perfect 4:4:4 chroma would look like, but more importantly see how you can see the individual pixels and how the structure of the text makes up one pixel in width? That's how you know you've got no zoom going on...

Whatever the case I'm excited to get mine and play with a new toy. :D

They aren't going to release a firmware correcting 4:4:4 chroma.

A forum member's reply.

I saw that, but some of their responses strongly suggests that it's feasible... and you'd be surprised how much public noise from customers can cause a company to re-evaluate a decision like that.

It could go the other way too, they could release a firmware update that alters the EDID to remove the positive 4:4:4 flag and then pretend it never happened or was just a bug.

As it stands now we know that the panel is capable of 4:4:4 chroma, the mainboard and chipset have the capability to do it, and the EDID claims that the set supports it. Seiki effectively crippled the set by having the firmware convert the signal internally back to 4:2:2 before outputting on the panel.

And some people have had some success with software / firmware hacks on previous models of Seiki sets so there's that possibility too.... sounds like it will be a fun ride regardless. :D

Eh, I wouldn't exactly take the comments of their "Social Media Manager" to the bank.

If anything, once you have the TV, I'd file a support ticket with Seiki like this guy...

But, ya know, with less veiled threats of legal action and general creepiness.

That was my post on OC since I am following that thread closely as well. I made another post where they actually said that it was not possible to enable 4:4:4 through firmware but the panel is compatible.

I don't think their social marketing team actually knows what all the terms mean to be honest.

Honestly for a ~$250 42" 4K monitor I feel like 4:2:2 is an acceptable compromise. But, maybe I'm easy. :)

I guess I am too.

I figure I'm not going to be looking at 1 pixel wide blue text on a red background (or any of the other combinations) enough to matter. I used a Westinghouse TX42F430S for years and it wasn't 4:4:4 chroma... and I loved that thing.

I think it's the value that overwhelms everything else here just like with the Westy back in the day. You nailed it - $250 for a 4K TV that does 60hz at it's native resolution. I can live with that. :D

just got mine in and setup with my consoles and AppleTV. Only tried it on 1080p so far, but It's a lovely display for ~250 bucks. PC Mode is def a must though; yikes that input lag.

Will hopefully grab all the cables and doodads to try 4k later.

@ebolamonkey. I can only see your first image. The other 2 are a huge negative sign. Could you upload them to imgur?

And your setup looks badass! Congrats!

Picked one up today, the last one in the area apparently.
Was testing it out on the workbench playing Netflix and 4K Youtube content through the built in apps.
I think Netflix will stream 4K to this TV as I was asked if I wanted to upgrade my plan to some Ultra HD for $11.99 when I logged in. I am guessing Netflix can see that I logged in on a 4K TV.

If you want to step up and buy a "cheap" 4K TV the alternative may be the 55" 4K Seiki

Anyone have the 55"? I held off on buying a 75" 4K tv b/c of some health issues that came up with my father, but would like a bigger TV in the bedroom. This won't hurt the budget, so I'm tempted to get it. We'd honestly only use it for maybe 4-5 hours a week, so we don't need all the bells and whistles; just something to stream Netflix mainly. Anyone know if it has upscaling?

Holy smokes! DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's freaking awesome!

That's a lot of transportation management right there. :) Capitalism Lab works great at 1080p on the main monitor. I guess I could have two games going on at the same time, haha.

These TVs are lighter than the SE39UY04's by the way. It's considerably lighter and packs more features. Go figure! Time to upgrade that 27" Samsung to something with more real estate. :)

I already ordered one on the 30th, but it hasn't shipped it seems. Says it is "Processing".

What do you use 2 TVs for at once?

I have 2 monitors. I play games on one and look up crafting patterns and their locations on the second monitor. It also houses my Skype, Twitch, music player, etc. You really should try a 2 monitor setup.
