ARMA III has been released

I really liked the concept of the "Life" mods...played a bit back in A2/OA, but it always just devolves into assholery and corrupt admins. Brings out the worst in people it seems, kind of like the DayZ type games.

looks like they finally optimized it ( for non AMD FX peasants that is :p )

min FPS was around 40-50 in big towns - altis life mod

framerate was higher most of the time

99fps avg on this bench http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=172475381&searchtext=benchmark

, played 4-5 showcase missions - some wasteland with a friend, pretty good experience overall ! controls are MUCH improved this time around

uninstalled arma 2 in an instant, i wanted to play a bit more of cold war rearmed and PMC campaign, but the controls are unbearable now :(

Asylum Gaming has the best Life servers available. Highly recommend.

I wanna join Critical Gaming but it seems all these A3l (Life-studios) type servers requires a freaking essay writing about your character. Nerds Takistan seems intresting too. I think its still in alpha.

Anyone here still play Wasteland? Started to mess around with it, and it's pretty fun usually. I thought it had a bit more of a survival / base building aspect to it though, but seems more recent versions have moved away from that. Starting out with full gear minus a main weapon, along with $5k-10k depending on server doesn't seem quite as fun. I kinda miss the scavenging & looting of DayZ.

I play a lot of wasteland...mainly the armory and top servers. You start with a pistol and low end gear and like 1500 bucks. The servers have good populations and OK missions.

$23.99 today on Steam Sale. Cheapest its ever been AFAIK. Has one of the most vibrant mod communities aside from maybe Skyrim's. Still the ultimate sandbox game.

The jungle terrain they previewed yesterday also looks amazing (though it won't be out for a while)

New DLC announced @ E3

Instead of more garbage DLC they should enhance the game. Mission editor needs a massive face lift. Squad command system is utter trash. Sadly mods can't fix the mess that is ArmA due to the limitations of the engine. Can't help but feel BI just threw in the towel. Wish Steam refunds were around back then.

But I'm sure we'll see some more crappy zombie mods.

Not sure what you are on about, the DLCs that have come out so far have had pretty significant gameplay changes. The Helicopter one has new helicopters, advanced flight model, slingloading, and a bunch of other stuff. The Marksman DLC has several new rifles, new ballistics/recoil, weapon resting/bipods, and fire from vehicles which was a LONG awaited feature. The new DLC is going to be an entirely new landscape. I believe in the long term they have announced work on a 3D editor and AI improvements, but time will tell.

How you are getting that there is nothing but crappy zombie mods is beyond me...if you're referring to DayZ, it's a totally different thing.

They need to fix the core issues with the game before splicing it with tiny pieces of half-assed DLC.

uhh mods pretty much fix all the major issues in the arma series and if you can't get over the little bugs you probably shouldnt be playing arma

They don't. And the quality of mods are very low on average; again, partially due to the limitations of the engine.

And there isn't any Major issues with the editor most people just blow at using it and at scripting.

Imagine if turning on your computer required you to flip it upside down, open it, then disassemble something to reach the power button inside. Then reassemble it all for it to actually turn on. That is BI's approach to the editor. And the lack of a 3D mode (that works) is down right pathetic.

You still can't edit loadouts without typing a god-awful script to delete the loadout, then add weapon_X, 10 magazine_Ys, with ammo_J, with greande_U, grenade_E. What a damn mess. And it got even worse with ArmA 3's (limited) weapon attachment system as now you have to add scopes and whatnot into the mess.

If only they could do something like this:
http://simhq.com/forum/files/usergals/2010/10/full-715-1543-scr_10_10_17_12_25_36.png

But that would be too logical. :p

IMO they really don't care anymore. Its just a lame sandbox game and won't be the infantry simulator/tactical game it could have been. Every time I see an update I get excited, only to see it is more superficial fluff added.

I still play it on a regular basis and enjoy it immensely, and it only gets better as time goes on.

Sounds like it's just not the game/community for you. Not saying the game isn't without flaws but it is a MASSIVE open-world with zero loading and you can have battles in multiple locations all over the map. I think given the scope they have done fairly well. Performance has always been a bugbear, but with my current rig the game honestly plays very well at max or close to max settings at 1920x1080. Sometimes mission makers will go crazy with the scripts and AI and performance can suffer, but that's not really so much a game issue.

Personal gripes and nitpicks about the game are fine, though I tend not to really freak out about some minute detail I dont like to the extent I'd throw the baby out with the bathwater (no offense), but it's not really accurate to say "they don't care" since they've been updating it constantly, they post bulletins of what they're working on and what they have planned, they have live streams showing new features, hold "best mod" contests with prize money, etc. If anything, the amount of post-release development they're putting in is unusually high given how long the game's been out and how the tendency for most developers is to move on to the next project once a game ships.

In other news I'm curious to see how a DX12 update impacts performance, since the engine seems very CPU dependent and DX12 would presumably help with that. The CEO of Bohemia mentioned back in January that he wanted DX12 for the game so we'll see.

Its one thing for minute details, another for massive shortcomings. But the DX12 bit is interesting. I hope they did more to optimize it though. Going from a GTX 670 to 970 netted me zero performance increase in an empty map with no AI and just 8 burning tanks. That was my "ArmA 3 benchmark". Set 8 tanks to 8 health in an empty map, watch them burn while looking at the frame rates. I would have thought the new GPU would raise the ~30 frame rates but it didn't. :(

AI has never worked well. Its essentially the same as ArmA 1/2. Put a sizable number in a single mission and it breaks. Trying getting them to enter planes, vehicles, or exit at a certain waypoint. There is a massive failure or two at some point. Try a small scale test in the mission editor? It works okay. Add it all together? Everything goes to hell. Bring this online and everything degrades even more.

Add in a worthless squad command system and it essentially devolves into playing Rambo with a bunch of respawn points (other members). Or play some MMO online mod.

I had the same issue with ArmA2. Went from GTX580 to GTX780 and my score went down 1fps with the built in ArmA2 benchmark.

Still haven't bought ArmA3 and don't think I will because it has the same shitty frame rates as ArmA2.

You have been playing shitty missions and or are terrible at mission making. I know guys that can make missions that have 100s of bots and there are no issues.

I never had and issue with ai commands in warfare. Somtimes the ai acts retarded but that's just arma for you.

And as for frame rates go I have played it with a r9 290 with zero issues from ably around 40- 55 fps. And with a 970m and have about the same frame rates.

If you are trying to run a mission on your pc and it has a shit load of ai your going to have issues. Since that puts a huge strain on your pc. It helps if the mission has proximity spawn and despawn scripts but but after a while your system is going to get bogged down. Arma is just designed to be played on a server.

If you can't get past the minor issues that the game has and has had since the begging of the issues. then its not the game for you.

Here is a quick list of stuff I recommend / we use for co-op nights in the group I play with:

-CUP addons (weapons/vehicles/terrain/units)
-RHS AFRF
-RHS USF
-ST Hud
-FHQ Accessories
-Babe midrange textures
-Task Force Radio (if you play on a server that supports it)

Cool, thanks.

I see you jump on Arma 3 often. I might have to hop on soon!

Just got the game, $34 CAD..

Total newb..

Any suggestions for good servers to play on? Not so interested in this life mod stuff, but just want to get on and play with some good players and shoot some bad guys..

I would like to know some servers, too. DM games are hard to find...

I think I asked this a long time ago, but is there a map / game mode like Arma2:OA's Insurgency?

I also remember messing around with Wasteland for a bit. It was fun at first, but it seems less about survival than it does just running around to salvage & scavenge so you can just buy better guns & vehicles. I kind of miss that DayZ feel.

KOTH servers are deathmatchy. Depending on what you want to play, you could search for some wasteland servers. King of the hill is pretty damn fun. If you get A3Launcher you can download a lot of the mods that a lot of servers use. KOTH servers don't use any mods, nor do the Wasteland servers. When you get into some custom stuff like Exile and whatever you need to start getting mods. But A3L will figure it all out if you have the mods downloaded

If you want to get into fast action wasteland then find a server that has a larger amount of starting money. One I play on starts you with 10k and you can fully gear yourself with about 2k. But vehicles are more expensive. Pawnees are 75k, jets are like 125 etc.

I used the A3launcher, but it just opened arma 3 and put me in the main game menu...should i be doing something else for it to actually connect me into the game (verified the needed mods were installed also)

The A3launcher just starts up your mods and puts you in the main menu. You have to select multiplayer, scenario or singleplayer from there.

I tried using it but just kept crashing with c++ errors (Windows 8.1) tried various fixed but none worked.
