So idk if anyone has picked this up, but Best Buy has it on sale for $20 and I picked it up over the weekend. And I have to say that firing this game up just gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside. Seeing the awesome intro animation / musical was great (and here it is: https://youtu.be/iYbU1uKPaGU).

Scrolling through the game gallery and seeing the animations which each game showcase just really made me appreciate the labor of love that was poured into this collection by Rare.

I played Viva Pinata for the first time and I gotta say it's the cutest game i've ever played. Another one I really love that I never played before either is Grabbed by the Ghoulies which is just a really fun game where you go through a haunted house and fight all kinds of funny and goofy stuff and creatures.

I also played Jetpac which was a old game by Rare, but really enjoyed its upgraded version "Jetpac: Refueled." Really really fun arcade shooter. Tried my hand at Blast Corps, Perfect Dark, and there are a bunch of really fun adventure games I can't wait to try like Banjo Kazooie, Jet Force Gemini, and Conker's Bad Fur Day among others. I might even give Battletoads a try again even though I was never able to make it past the jet-ski part which is like the 3rd level or something.

As you progress through the different games, you also unlock interviews with the Rare team and all kinds of neat behind-the-scenes stuff. For $20 this game/compilation is a no-brainer. I've been gaming on consoles a long time with a couple years where I was exclusively PC and still do both to this day, but games like this make me appreciate just how great consoles really are b/c otherwise I would have missed out on so many great games if I was PC-only and even these I missed out on most of them so it's cool discovering them. Aside being a Rare collection, I feel like this is a celebration of gaming through the decades.

Here's the full game list and trailer:

You should write product testimonials for a living ;).

It is a fine look back at a simpler time in gaming, when one only cared if the game was fun or not.

I got my digital copy shortly after release and I feel it's a great addition to my game library. I have yet to play through all the included games yet (having too much fun with banjo kazooie, conkers, and perfect dark). Still working on unlocking a lot of the extra behind-the-scenes stuff as well.

Is it worth the asking price? To me, yes. Considering the price of a Conker cart these days, it's a nice and cheap way to experience it if you haven't.

At $20 it's a total steal. Even if you never touch half the games it's still a great deal.

Kind of reviving this thread so I don't need to make a new one lol. Thinking about picking this up and had a question about one game in particular, conkers bad fur day. One of my most played games from child hood lol and wanted to know. Is it the original uncut n64 version or is it the lame censored Xbox remake? And if it is the n64 version does it include the original multiplayer?

It's the xbox remake. The game hasn't held up that well TBH. The Banjo games on the other hand are still really solid games.

It's absolutely retarded how some of the games download and run as separate entities from Rare Replay and take forever to launch as a result.

I don't think they had a choice. All the 360 'mode' games need to be that way in order to run properly.

How enjoyable would this be for someone who wanted to explore the history of Rare games but never played them? I.e. beyond just nostalgia, if one wanted to approach this to see what all these games were like.

$5? :D Yea, I got it for a steal! :)

I love this set. My son bought it for me, and he's played it more than I have. But, it does bring back the memories. Definitely worth the price.

It doesn't include a lot of the better rare games like donkey kong. It's good but I wouldn't call it rare history because it's missing one of the greatest games of all time. You'll have to thank Nintendo for that.

According to this interview with Rare Gamer, the version in Rare Replay is the original N64 version.

Why would you expect Donkey Kong on a rareware game compilation? Nintendo made Donkey Kong back before rareware even existed. Herp Derp. Thats like being shocked that that there arn't any Halo games on the Wii U virtual console store rofl.

Yeah, no. DKC is a rare game. Unless you think I was talking about just 'Donkey Kong' the '80s game with an ape throwing barrels at Mario. In which case you didn't look at the youtube link w/ the DKC song.

Right, but Donkey Kong is a Nintendo intellectual property. Meaning Nintendo have the sole rights to reproduction and distribution. If Nintendo doesn't want one of their IPs to be distributed on another gaming platform, then it's not going to happen regardless of who the developer is/was.

Uhh, what? Who said anything about Donkey Kong Country? That's a different game then what we were discussing. Pay attention.

I was discussing DKC. I said 'Donkey Kong' because I was too lazy to write Donkey Kong Country and it's we're talking about rare so it's implied FFS. You'd have known that if you saw my youtube link. Not sure why i'm the one that needs to pay attention here as you can't even keep track of the fact that i'm the same person replying to you. Yes, we all agree Rare didn't develop 'Donkey Kong' TM.

My phone's data plan is abysmal at only 200MB of data usage per month, so i apologize but I do not have the means to view that link so there was no way I could have known. Also there are common misconceptions on the internet about who legally owns DKC so i've learned to never make assumptions regarding people's comments to the game because without enough elaboration there's no way for me to tell what they actually meant to say.

I know full well Nintendo actually owns DKC. I was just commenting that the Rare Replay could be better if they'd somehow managed to actually put *all* the Rare games on there as they are missing a lot of the really good ones.

Nintendo only has partial ownership of Donkey Kong Country, with Rare also having partial ownership. There is a reason Nintendo pulled DKC 1-3 from the Wii Virtual console store immediately after the Microsoft Rare buyout. They have never pulled a VC game "just cuz". That's leaving money on the table and they've never done that without legal reasons behind it before.
