Of all the OS that I've installed and used, Win 10 has been the most problematic. There are too many problems to list. Just know that there is. Too many useless features that are forced on you. I wish there was a more "streamlined version. I don't think I would ever use another OS other than MS but for now I'll stick with 8.1

Good for you.

I've been running it for a month now (well a decrapified and despyware'd version of it), and it is an OS. Something that facilitates all the other crap I do and fades into the background unnoticed most of the time. Only annoyance, Asus has chosen not to publish W10 drivers for my Z68 motherboard.

I can't shutdown my rig. Specifically, it just won't shut down when told to. It reboots in a few seconds. I even have all wake functions disabled in Windows as well as in BIOS. Really considering going two steps down to Win 7 and leave well enough alone. M$ is really pissing me off!

I've updated all drivers, BIOS to no avail.

I've run it on several machines of my own with little issue. However, it's nothing special and quite a boring OS. There is no 'golden feature' for me in this OS.

However, it appears that Joe Average just screws 10 up more than any other OS and it's making me a lot of money sorting it all out. The upgrades and updates just seem to hose machine after machine so I'm getting half a dozen dropped in a week to fix. The big update a few weeks ago was crazy time for me. Lot of wi-fi and GPU issues Thanks MS...I think.

Not sure the customers will like it when it happens all over again in 6 months time for the next big update. I can see 10 being the OS that makes more customers move to something else in the long run. Something a little more low maintenance.

I can see Chromebooks becoming even more popular for the average user in 2016/17.

I like it more than 8 because I feel it gets out of my way more. I also really like Microsoft's Android emulator, which is much faster than the one Google gives you. Although I imagine that's not a selling point for most users because most people don't write Android apps. I don't really have any choice anyway because I now need NVMe support and Windows 10 is pretty much what I need to run.

If I was having driver problems I'm sure I'd feel differently.

P.S. Contrary to popular belief, Windows 10 doesn't actually spy on you, read the ToS as to what Microsoft can do with the data. It's especially funny if you compare it to Mac OS, iOS or Android's ToS because they all gather a lot more data about you.

No problems at all with Windows 10 on any of the rigs that are in my sig (which allow it to be installed). Even the step daughters Celeron/2GB laptop that her dad bought her for Xmas, updated no problems & is running faster than it was on 8.1.

If I had to be picky, the only "issue" I have found on my rigs is that the upgraded machines take 3 or 4 seconds longer to boot up (main machine booted from cold in 7 seconds with W7 but takes 12 seconds now with W10). Other than that I am perfectly happy with it.

Once you flip all the proper privacy buttons, and remove the bloatware, and turn some of the more in the way features like Cortana off, (or as off as you can get them), it's not bad. It can just be a pita to get it where you want it.

That said, I only have 10 on my Surface Pro 3, and my gaming PC still uses 8.1, and both of my media center PCs are on Win7.

Because 99.9999% of the time a W8.1 driver will work. They could always rename the same drivers and put them in a new folder if that made you feel better.

Runs fine on Supermicro, Surface Pros and Thinkpads. If you have crappy hardware or BIOS support then I can understand there being issues. It's the best release so far for both desktop/laptop and touch hybrid/tablet.

I mean geeze OSX and Android's file manager friggin CC all your local HDD/SDD searches to Apple/Google for crying out loud! Oh wait, or was that Microsoft and W10 that does that by default?

I still have Windows 10 running in a VM since last year when they first released the developer preview ISOs. It's nothing but a garishly coloured, nightmarish parody of what a Windows OS looks like in my eyes. This on top of the many struggles I have had with keeping that Windows 10 VM running and updated with new released. The new, completely schizophrenic control panel (who needs one when you can have two, right?) and the horrendous flat look everywhere are all strong arguments to not subject myself to such an experience on a daily basis.

Occasionally I will boot up the Win10 VM to remind myself of how grateful I should be that Windows 7 is still being updated well into 2020.

I put win 10 on my sig laptop the other day and "flipped all the proper privacy buttons".during installation. But, when I went ahead and checked, would you believe it the fucking thing had flipped them all back to on. Piece of shit spyware OS...fuck MS, seriously.

The forcing of Windows Updates and driver updates is the biggest problems for me also. They are update happy and don't seem to care it causes mega problems, because you agree to not sue them for more than the price of Win 10 when you press the install button, which if you upgrade is 0 dollars.

One of my three upgrade machines totally removed all the software and settings, and I had to spend quite a bit of my own time reinstalling and reconfiguring applications. It took at least 40 hours, no big deal just a weeks worth of free work from me for MS, you are welcome.

I agree these Threshold releases where essentially you have a completely new upgrade (not just patches) once a year or more is complete insanity.

Also, they gutted their testing group, so the developers now have to test. How can you be objective about your own code? Answer, you can't. That's why there are so many bugs, it's really a PEBCAC and ID10T world we compute in now.

The control panel and settings everywhere is showing that the OS has no design whatsoever, except to duct tape whatever code they can together and call it a masterpiece.

MS has been caught blatantly changing those settings with security updates, really not sure why they think they own our PCs now, I guess they will change it to MCs, Microsoft's Computer?

Was not aware of that. Perhaps I missed the update responsible, I just went and checked those settings again, and none of them are different than they were a couple months back when I first purchased the surface and changed the privacy settings.

MS better hope DX12 is something spectacular otherwise most tech savvy people will stick with 7 or 8.1

If Microsoft don't get their crap together and soon they better find a major money maker other than OSes to peddle to keep their doors and Windows open. 3 swings and misses in a row is a trend.

If you are running Threshold 2, when you update (it's really an upgrade, it's an install, not a patch) it resets the security settings. If you don't specifically go into change the settings during setup (advanced or something to that affect) it resets them to super-hoover-your-data mode(tm).

Also MS has renamed security patches in Win 7 so the "Get Windows 10" gets installed even if you hid the previous version. You have to run a tool that helps you stop it permanently, because MS is a lying rat of a corporation.

Also MS has ported a lot of the telemetry stuff to Window 7 without telling you. They are getting any and all of your data any way they can. Funny how they can never backport DirectX, but telemetry magically makes the appearance on an earlier OS. It's fishy and proves they can back port anything they want, they just only do it when it serves them.

they haven't renamed the 'Get Windows 10' nag icon, they just re-issue it every few months...it's always been KB3035583...so even if you hide it you need to hide it again each time MS re-issues it...it's annoying but at least they are not stooping so low as to constantly renaming the Windows 10 nag update

No...but they keep adding W10 update KBs to earlier Windows. Last count there were about 3 or 4 dozen W10 upgrade related KBs for W7/W8/W8.1 and the list keep getting longer.

but those don't really seem to do anything...the KB3035583 update is the one with the annoying nag screen...I always do fresh installs on my Windows 7 machines and avoid installing 3035583 and a few other telemetry ones

There aren't "a few" W7 telemetry KBs...last I knew there were about 2 dozen KBs

And that is only up to date as of September.

Thank you. It's a refreshing change from the usual script kiddy comments about how we're old fogeys, should get with the times, etc.

Fuck them. Will be sticking with Win7 Ultimate for awhile yet.
Win10 might be relegated to being booted up on a separate SSD / partition to play the odd DX12 title.

I've actually gone back to Vista drivers to fix some older hardware with 10.

Wow, I got an infraction for saying sh*t in the body of my post once and the OP says it in the subject and nothing happens at all. I see how things work around here now, some whiner cried to Kyle and is the only reason I got an infraction and not because I said sh*t. That is unjustified. I'll probably get another now for posting off topic.

Whining about an infraction typically results in - guess what - another infraction. Take it like a man or whatever and move on, but don't bitch about it 'cause it'll just bury you that much deeper, seriously.

As for Windows 10, well, you get what you pay for and since it's effectively free of charge, it becomes abundantly clear pretty quickly that it ain't even worth that. :D

Windows 10, working very well for me and I am an IT professional. (I get paid so, that makes me a professional. :D ) Thank you OP for this thread though, it was really entertaining. Oh, and the Amiga OS 2 and above looks better to me than Windows 7 ever has. I remember trying to get the superfetch to run like it did in Vista but there was no way to make it work that way so, superfetch essentially became almost useless in Windows 7. (Why should I have to wait 6 minutes after the OS boots before superfetch does anything? I wanted to open my programs right away very quickly off my hard drives at that time.)

and the last sentence highlights the problem and pointlessness of posts like this.
You're not going to stay on Windows 7, 8.x. You're going to upgrade to Windows 10.. eventually. You even say it yourself that you'll never use another OS other than Microsoft. So, why delay the Microsoft Experience? It's not like it's going to include less features OOTB as it moves forward.

If you were actually convicted enough to complain this bad, you'd be open to other platforms. I don't understand how people can tolerate micromanaging and distrusting their OS to this level and continue using it as a daily driver. The people who are accepting of the new Microsoft direction seem to be having a good time, yet those who aren't really are not working to better their situation.

Doing nothing will just leave you needlessly stressed and grumpy about your computing experience. Explore new options and the worst case is that you'll learn something new.

Once I found a program to assist with removing unwanted modern apps (CCleaner) I've been happier.

The only lingering problem I have is that when I logout (during shutdown process) the system gives and error audio sound. Has done it between fresh installs and even on another computer I have so I know it's a Windows issue. Event Viewer has not helped the alert being generated has no useful information to me.

Ever since I got rid of Microsoft products I have been much less stressed and happy about computing again.

Everyone should do themselves a favour and really check the alternatives out there.

Depends on your field. Every OSX update completely breaks ProTools, like clockwork. Has always been like that, which is tragically hilarious when you consider that ProTools for years was Mac only.

Uh, that's by design. They milk updates, one of the things I hate about the Apple ecosystem.

Since you haven't had the joy...No it isn't about "milking updates". It isn't by design either.

EVERY minor revision update breaks ProTools. I do mean every minor monthly revision security update will break ProTools. That means the 3rd and 4th decimal point level updates. Not just the big title name changes, but the monthly security ones too.

I don't understand how people can tolerate micromanaging and distrusting their OS to this level and continue using it as a daily driver.

Probably because the average person isn't that concerned with the OS, they simply want the device they're using to do what they want.

The people who are accepting of the new Microsoft direction seem to be having a good time, yet those who aren't really are not working to better their situation.

It's not really so much a new direction but an alignment of Windows to current computing norms. Data sharing, cloud integration, automatically updated software, that's just how most computing devices that people use work these days.

I have found that every OS X update, especially the bigger ones, is an adventure in finding out which applications and tools have stopped working or developed new, interesting bugs.

Linux is sadly much the same.

Windows offers the most consistent experience across updates and even versions. Or used to, until this whole Windows 8+ baloney started...
