How can I get a standard start menu with W10?

So few months back when I upgraded from W7 to 10 when I'd press the start button I would get pretty much the usual start menu as you would with other versions of Windows, yet recently when I formatted and did a clean install of W10 I just get this ugly and inconvenient "box"

How can I get it to be a normal Windows menu?

not the problem I would thought this would be, but I make suggestion anyways.
Start10 or Classicshell, I use CS myself on my win7 build and tried with win10, I still much prefer the way win7 operates and everything is arranged and MUCH easier to find, anyways, take abit of time with classicshell and it can make the POS experience win10 is actually bearable.

MSFT should have learned from win8-8.1 and left the "classic" desktop as an option though by default would be the "modern" one of course.

Forced updates, data spying (that cannot be turned off) data download sharing etc, Win10 is just a horrid example of "modern"

Claissicshell, thanks for the suggestion. I like it.

Classicshell is great for anything after Win 7.

That looks like the "tablet mode" Start menu with all of the tiles removed.

You would fix that in the Notification Center > Tablet Mode, or Start > Settings > System > Tablet Mode.

Ditto. That's how tablet mode mode looks on my laptop with all the metro apps unpinned from desktop start menu and also resized to eliminate dead space. On my phone right now but you should be able to press windows key+a to bring up action menu then deselect tablet mode.

Agreed. Tablet mode should only be available on a device with touch input however.

Also, did they actually gimp the ability of what you can do as far as colors on your taskbar and such? I remember with W7 while you could choose to make everything a solid color there was a slider one could use that would change the color. So say you had it all blue you move the slider it would also make the blue go from as bright blue as can be to a very dark blue and everything in between. When I go to personalization and press color it gives me multiple accent colors but I am forced to have it stuck at the shade of the color it wants.

Start menu full screen mode is enabled. That is not tablet mode but a full screen start menu.

Holy crap, RIGHT after I used that app I found what I was looking for, AS WELL as how to change the (I think?) opacity. Right-click the start menu button, hit properties click "Appearance" on the left and you'll have 4 different styles under "choose start menu and start button style". And right under that you have the options of "use custom start menu coloring" and "use custom taskbar coloring".

Personally I think this all should've been under Personalize>Theme.

EDIT: Just now realized those extra options were due to installing startisback. Nevertheless I think all these features should have been in W10 from the get-go. After the W8 debacle you'd think Microsoft would learn.

When you disable tablet mode you probably have to drag the start menu back over. You just click and drag the edge and top to resize it how you want.

I wish Microsoft would add the ability to pin to start (like at the top of the start menu) even if you are using the minimal size start menu

You shouldn't have to do that. The Start Menu should keep it's desktop mode sizing even when going back from tablet mode. I do this constantly and it works fine.

Not sure what you mean. You can drag apps from All Programs to any position on the Start Menu you want.

Lets say you have nothing pinned on the right side (where live tiles sit) and you drag it to the smallest position so it pops up like the 7 and older Start Menu. I'd like to be able to pin things, like where most used programs go automatically, to the top or near the top. I don't mean full live tiles, just the normal link. At the very least, maybe allow doing a half-size so you can fit 1 column of medium tiles? Maybe I'm the only one that wants something like this but it kinda seems weird that I cannot just drag it smaller than the current size with tiles or customize the list at the top.

I have a laptop with a small screen and I just don't like having the Start Menu opened to the right that far. This is one of those more ways to customize the better type of deals.

I've long proposed a tile size that's equivalent to a class Start Menu link, with an icon on the right and text on the left along with a way to set the default tile type to something besides medium.

Really the customization of the Start Menu is the right side. I want to customize the left side of the Start Menu as well (not just choosing my user folders). Maybe adding custom ones or better "pin to" options?
