Played Quake Lately? - [H]ardOCP

We need a new Quake. With Doom 4 coming in Spring 2016, is it unreasonable to figure maybe late 2017 for Quake 5? We have no clue if they're working on it in secret....and I recall Carmack saying how they wanted to go back to the original quake universe...

Finally got this installed (non steam). Can sure stress out my old X2, lol.

I remember not even having a local dial up internet connection, so my brother had to take his computer (mine couldn't run it) to an old lady's house that lived 30 mins away, using free AOL minutes to download the demo. Meanwhile, visiting with this very old lady for 3 hours. Oh, the price we used to have to pay. Thanks to that old lady though!

Awesome. I still have the disk. The fact that Trent Reznor did the music for the game also gives me a chub.

Oh the hours spent playing this. I will definitely give this a whirl.

Now where do I have a cd/dvd drive..........

I just realized the steam version DOES NOT include the NIN soundtrack!!

That is, just the worst for you guys that don't still have your retail copies and it's especially horrible for the youngblood's who've never played it before....

This!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah the intro song by NiN and the ambient sounds are god like and make the strange Lovecraft style maps even more immersive. I couldn't imagine playing without it. I still have two copies of the original disk and once in a while pop the CD in just for the music.

So badass..

I kinda wish I had the time to finish the remix project I was working on back in 2006. Now that the IP is owned by Bethesda, I wouldn't want to get entangled in any funny business, but the zBrush models, textures / artwork, sound and everything was from scratch, so with a few changes and new maps, it could be its own original, just couldn't reference the name or try to emulate the classic.

Here were a few of the models back then, all original by ReplicA (Hey if you're still around, drop me a line, be great to catch up)

I actually have some of the original music sound tracks by Hermann, plus maps and code by myself somewhere.

Just gives me the itch to want to start building something now.

Not too shabby, not too shabby!

Enjoyed playing it through on my new Windows 95, Pentium 150 box with 32MB of ram and Matrox Mystique 4MB card back in 1997.

Just got a promotion, living on my own in my new apartment, my own PC. Good times.

Still have the CD and manual...

Uh oh, some people just HAD to post pics of their id collections. Now I HAVE to dig mine up when I get home. :D I have them all.

I first tried Quake on a demo disc I got with a magazine back in the day. I played it on an old Mac we had and even though it ran poorly I still enjoyed playing through the demo multiple times. I later rented the game on N64 but didn't get very far. After reading this article I became interested in trying Quake again so I had to get it on Steam after seeing it go on sale. I am now hooked on the game especially after getting Quake HD up and running. The levels are incredible and I love the way the game feels and sounds.

I have a question about the Quake HD mod. Is there a way to change it back to using the original gun sounds effect? I miss the original sound of the nail gun.

It's $2.49 on Steam now due to the Winter Sale, but the missions packs are not included, while they are included for the same price on GOG. However, you can also get the Quake Collection on Steam for $10.19, and get Quake 1-3 and all the packs for each.

I also got the disc for Quake episode 1 from a magazine, PC Gamer. Some friends also rented a N64 console, there weren't many games available for it(and the ones that were sucked) and we became bored quickly, so back to the PC we went. After having spent so much time playing Doom, Heretic, Hexen, and Duke Nukem, the full 3D world of Quake blew my fucking mind. I couldn't stop playing it whenever I had free time. I've been using the Darkplaces mod for a year now, many thanks to the creators of that mod.

Thank you Kyle for this article. More people need to experience Quake and understand how it changed the gaming industry.

Awesome. I picked it up the other day. The article reminded me how fun and fast paced of a game it was. I even found my old box and CD but still bought it off of GoG anyway for the ease of use. I've been playing it all night! Next up is Duke Nukem 3D on eDuke32. Great article and reminder of Quake, thank you!

Should not play quake, should play QW :) Fun times back in 230 ping days. Swedes and nordics still raping hard at this game even today I bet.

Most dinamic game ever made. Q3 could not compete.

DM6...best quake map ever. I spent hundreds of hours on that map alone. All of the stock Q1 maps are good but DM6 is the best, IMHO.

Is that the nQuake engine in those videos?

No idea, haven't dabbled in it for years. I'd assume they use the normal QW OpenGL client (don't think they still play 320x300 resolution, without opengl :D) + a mod pack for skins and such. Might be running on the server side though. I'm a DM2 guy :)

so.....damn.. without spending money how in the world do I nstall quake again? I have a CD of it still

how do you get see through water?

actually somewhat disappointed with this. It changes some fundamental things about the game there were great. Mainly some movement and jumping mechanics.

Bought Quake on the GOG sale, and testing these mods out..

Whats the performance expectation on ultra? See like 40 fps in the opening on 3570k / 980 (1440p). I set lighting to normal to get 144 atm.

You should be seeing about 6 times that amount. Are you using the software renderer maybe? You'll want to run GL Quake. (or one of the newer source ports) (maybe you already knew that and something's up, but you should be seeing either a ridiculous framerate with VSync off, or should be seeing a nicely synced and limited rate with it on.)

Classic doom (c-doom) for doom3 rocks. I am guessing most people know about this but if you haven't tried it it's worth a try. I haven't tried it with sikkmod and all those image enhancements though.. but it's one well done mod full of doom nostalgia.

edit: and I too have my original quake CD. As it was said, there are some things you just don't toss out. :)

quake 2 with lithium mod + hook was the best - rail gun was the bomb

This was my 1998.. omg. with some CTF thrown in. Strength rune and hyper blaster.. muahahaha. :)

This!

Quakeworld Team Fortress was my crack for many years (until Counterstrike took off).

I even joined a clan for a time. I was a bad-ass engineer! The EMP grenade was simply staggering against heavys :D

Here is the awesome intro video, in all it's 1000 polygon goodness!

Steam version or disc or both? Up until Quake 3 (I believe) Carmack programmed these games so that they would run in Win NT, and if it didn't work in NT, well... Probably some of the best backwards compatible games there are. WTF is Windows 7,8,10 doing that can break these games? Still running Vista so I haven't heard of this before now.
