According to this Reuters article, anonymous sources are claiming that Samsung will be making chips for AMD starting next year.

Tech giant Samsung Electronics Co Ltd will start making new chips for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Inc next year, South Korea's Electronic Times reported on Tuesday citing unnamed sources. The paper said Samsung's foundry business and Globalfoundries will jointly start producing a central processing chip as well as a graphics processing chip for AMD next year using their 14-nanometre technology.

 
That should help with the production node change and yields. Now we just have to hope the design side can do enough soon enough to matter.
 
this has been known unofficially since gf licensed sammy's 14nm process and scrapped their own... guess amd will not have many chips coming out of tsmc except legacy ones.
 
Actually they will still use TSMC 16nm FinFet but for other products (mid/low end). Greenland (high end GPU) and Zen will be in 14nm FinFet.

So AMD won't be fighting Apple and nvidia (amongst others) for production time at TSMC's newest process?

It's nice to have options.
 
This is great for AMD, and TSMC I got two words for you:

Eat shit.

The endless problems with manufacturing, node problems, and to boot thinking "We're the only company around that can produce your chips" caused TSMC to start sniffing its own farts and massively overcharging both AMD & Nvidia because they just picked up Apple as a contract, and thus "Had to charge vastly more per waffer because Apple buys all the fab time"

Not only is Samsung a much bigger producer of chips, they have zero problems with 16nm node and even 14nm node

All we need now is Nvidia to pull out of TSMC and they'll be reduced to the shit fab company they are, making low grade cell phone chips all day long.

This is seriously good news for AMD, TSMC was hitting them hard in the pocket book because they thought AMD/Nvidia had nowhere else to go, but now they do I bet TSMC CEO's are seriously rethinking how they do business as I bet Nvidia and other high end chip contractors are looking elsewhere.

They have not made x86 chips though. This would be a new process, which means there could be complications as different processes are brought online.

Which brings into question the x86 license that AMD has from Intel. AMD will have to be careful how it positions itself, because Intel has some very strict rules on who gets to make x86 CPU's....and giving them to the Koreans, I doubt, is something they want to see happen.

VIA is the other company that has an x86 license and they do use TSMC, but their processors are junk and have always been junk. But AMD processors are competitive and relevant.

Samsung doesn't have a 16nm node.

The question would be, why? AMD wouldn't need Samsung unless GF didn't have enough capacity and I don't think that's the case.

BTW nvidia already switched to IBM once back in 2004 and that didn't turned out well. Also Tegra 6 is supposed being made at samsung.

How does a HP or a LP transistor of 6t SRAM cell know it's in a x86 circuit/architecture versus a ARM circuit/architecture? Yes, there's obviously a large amount of interconnectedness between architectures and the fab process, but Intel could make some screaming good ARM processors on its fab line, too.
 
It was known that Global Foundries was going to use Samsung tech to produce chips for AMD. The only news here is that Samsung will be producing them as well.
 
Great partnership that smart consumers wanted to see happen. Now make a Galaxy Note phablet running Windows x64 so I can buy.
 
If only AMD would outsource its drivers development...

Why? They're already better and if the past few months are anything to go by they've been doing better than Nvidia, if anything.

They're still sort of unproven in the drivers thing following their latest announcements and wasn't there a claim that their first Crimson release cause overheating problems as well? I hope they get a better track record and offer drastically improved Linux drivers so there's other options besides Intel and NV for Linux, but it might be too early to tell if they're really gonna pull off this higher quality driver thing.
 
As much as I bash AMD over drivers and marketing, we so need them in the marketplace. Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come for them.
