Dell T20 Mini-Tower "server" for $139

I've been running 4x 4TB WDs w/ a SSD OS (backed up to old laptop drive, so six drives total) 24x7x365 since Feb 2014 on two identical systems with no issues. *knocks on wood* I don't monitor drive temps, but touching them feels fine.

That is great to know man!!!

I just wonder if anyone has been running any high speed SAS drives?

There are a few people running the server with ESXi. Anyone have an extra one they want to sell me? :)

Lol. Oops. I meant I am looking for the server. The other part is to answer the question about them working for esxi.

It may need custom drivers/Vibs slipstreamed in to the iso using ESXI Customizer...

I have three of these.

First is running Windows 7- I put a Core I7 4770 in it, with 16 gig of Crucial Non ECC ram and a Dell Precision T1700 power supply - Nvidia 770 PCI-E Video card. an SSD,

Second running Server 2012 with HyperV- Using a Xeon E3 1276 V3, 16 gig Non ECC, raid 1 SSD's and two 4tb file drives

Third is running Windows 10, Core I7 4770, 16 gig Non Eccm SSD using as desktop for parents.

If you get Discovercard rewards, use the DELL Gift cards and save more money.

These are great computers for the money. Bootup is about 10 seconds into Windows with the SSD. It plays Star Wars Battlefront even with the onboard Intel 4600 video.

So it has no issues recognizing s1150 CPU's other than just the 2 it says it supports ? the tech manual also says it only accepts unbuffered ECC memory, does it also recognize non ECC as well - as in just normal DDR3 ?

Yay! I was upset I missed this one originally. Picked it up. Already have a spare 500gb SSD and Windows 10 copy. This is perfect! Thanks!

EDIT: Ugh...ordered another

I ordered a fourth one.

Had Discover points left over, used the TISTHESERVER code and used the free shipping,

I bought this deal and was wondering if one of you weren't going to use the ram that came with it, i could put it to use.

Just PM me.

Not sure if anyone cares, but I tried TISTHESERVER against the Xeon iteration to see if it was like the original deal in the OP (since that code worked on both)...sadly it does not...:'(

It works with the Xeon 1276 V3 and the Core 7 4770.

I have confirmed that several times.

pulled this from the spec sheet -
"Processors - Intel® Xeon® processor E3-1200 v3 product family and
Intel® Pentium® processors"

so maybe it's not picky at all as long as you stay in the supported families, and apparently other S1150 cpu's work fine as well. This is shaping up to be a pretty nimble little box for the $'s, I was concerned that maybe the BIOS only supported the 2 CPUs it ships with. Think I'll grab a second one

According to the website it supports up to 4 hard drives. I'd like to see 6 though :/. Great price though

It supports six drives: four 3.5" drives and two 2.5" drives, but you need a controller and data+power cables to run more than four drives.

Right. It has 4 SATA ports on the motherboard. The case will physically accept 6 drives though. It will hold 4 @ 3 1/2" drives and 2 @ 2 1/2" drives. The dual 2 1/2" drives are able to mount in the optical drive bay which is a slim laptop type drive.

Funny thing though; there isn't an adapter for the slim drive. In fact there isn't a empty power port to attach a slim drive adapter.

if any of you guys end up upgrading the memory on your T20's (I'm sure everyone here will lol) I'd be happy to take the orphaned little 4GB that came in it off your hands to help offset the upgrade cost - I'm thinking 8GB will be fine for my use. Just drop me a PM - Thanks

I got mine you can have once I get back into town I'll send you a pm

Anyone have any luck upgrading the processor in this thing? Would a 4770(k) work?

I have used the 4770, 4790k and a Xeon 1276 V3 without issue.

These things work great as a gaming machine. Pick up a power supply for the Dell T1700 365 watt on ebay and add a video card.

I added PCI-E M2 Samsung 950 and a Corsair H110 GTX AIO kit.

I love Dell products, always am temped to buy there stuff even if i dont need them haha

I may have to look into one of these for a cheapo VM server.

This is about as cheap as you can get for a VM server, although I think you'd be better served by one of the multi-core server ATOM systems.

Waiting for the $40 coupon to come again. At $140 it really can't be beat, only annoying things is that since its a "server" it doesn't support sleep correctly and it requires a laptop DVDROM drive.
