According to the latest statistics , almost 40% of all money spent shopping online in the U.S. is spent at Amazon. If you look at the chart below, that is more than the next 21 biggest retailers combined.

Amazon took in 39.3 percent of e-commerce spending from Nov. 1 through Dec. 6, up from 37.9 percent during the same period a year earlier, according to Slice Intelligence, which gathers data through e-mail receipts of 3.5 million shoppers. You’d have to combine the Web sales of the next 21 retailers, including Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy Co., Macy’s Inc. Home Depot Inc., Nordstrom Inc. and Costco Wholesale Corp., to match Amazon’s share, Slice data shows.

Can't say I bought anything at a retail store this holiday. Simply checking lightning deals every day and getting gifts.

Got my monitor and a notcua cpu cooler from amazon, they have better prices than Newegg these days.

Anazon is great I canceled a order recently and had to talk to customer service 3 times and they credited my account a extra 23.00 =)

did most of my shopping there this year. sorry but working the way I have I just don't have the time to spend doing it the hard way. didn't have to pack or ship crap.

Yeah, Newegg used to be great back then alongside some places like ZipZoomFly and TigerDirect. ZipZoomFly is gone, the other 2 pretty much suck as far as customer service.

Rarely they'll have an OK/Good deal that Amazon won't but Amazon beats them hands down in regards to their customer service and return policy.

I find myself only bothering with Amazon and Microcenter these days.

Seems about right. They usually have the best prices and when you factor in 2 day shipping with Prime, the fact that they'll wrap your gifts for you and they offer easy returns with very little hassle it's a no brainer to get your gifts there.

About the only thing I can ding Amazon for is their attempts to lock the Amazon Instant Video service to specific devices that don't compete with their crappy Fire products.

After experiencing other retailers sending damaged products and then being a pain to exchange them, I can understand. I moved 95% of my shopping to amazon because of the quality and customer service I have experienced from them.Their prices have kinda climbed for the month though :/

There was a time that I shopped around all over the internet for stuff, but over the last 5 years, I generally find that Amazon is as cheap as it gets. Sure I still look at Newegg for h/w, but I used to go to http://deepdiscount.com for DVDs and/or CDs, but I rarely do now, because they're generally more than Amazon (when I check).

That said, I've heard some talk about buying clothes form Amazon, and I rarely do that. I'd have to know exactly what I wanted and that'd require me to take a trip to the mall. If I bother to do that, I might as well just buy it.

I rarely buy from Amazon these days because they collect sales tax and the slow shipping without Prime. I find that most of the time I can get stuff at the same price or less at other vendors.

I did find a new cover for my RV at the best price on Amazon recently. I was able to get a 30 day Prime trial. I ordered the day before Thanksgiving and it arrived on Saturday. I was glad it came Saturday as it snowed a good bit the next day. I didn't realize at the time that Chase Freedom has 10% back at Amazon right now. I ended up placing another four orders last week from Amazon because of the 10% cash back, but they were all third parties so no tax.

Exactly. They're always cheapest anyway, and with prime it just sweetens the deal.

I did actually get some knives from Cutleryandmore... it was much easier to see the various knives (only one of each one!) within a collection, and they were the same rock bottom prices that amazon had. I could live without 2-day since i hopped on it early.

Clothes are something that I really want to try on first before buying UNLESS it's something frumpy like a hoodie or sweat or something for bed like a baggy tee. Fit matters a lot with clothes you wear to work and just because someone lists something as a certain size doesn't mean that it's the same as some other company's stuff in the same size. For a lot of other things though, Amazon is hard to beat except, like Darry said, prices do seem to have gone up a little here and there for the holidays, probably in response to demand.

I have the Camelx3 plugin so I can check prices on anything i buy. Most of the time, prices are fairly stable (unless there's a huge sale), but Cx3 is your friend. It's too bad that Newegg tossed them out.

Amazons long term goal is to shut down B&M sites and control the market (be the Amazon). Once people petty much have to buy many things from Amazon they wont feel so cozy about it. Especially with the internet being a broken, buggy POS thats being gamed more ways then we know yet. The internet was a crappy thing to move an economy over to.

Majority of Christmas came from Amazon. They only think I buy locally are stocking stuffers. Fancy chocolates for the wife, etc.

About 95% of my family's Christmas shopping has been through Amazon this year. Having that 2 day air is so convenient and they carry stuff that is not easy to find. So yeah...

I've ordered 13 things from Amazon in the last 48 hours, and that only covers a few people. I need to order stuff for another five or six family members still

There's tax on Amazon in my state so I check other sources if the tax is significant compared to the shipping costs I won't have to pay. For cheap stuff, I generally check Amazon and Newegg and that's it.

Free returns on most clothing with Prime though. I'll buy two or three sizes of whatever and send back what doesn't fit. They seem to encourage that kind of shopping.

Well aren't you just a glass half empty person :D ... every company's goal is control of the market (if it isn't then they aren't competing aggressively enough). The internet is a perfect model for a large retailer. A B&M store can't maintain a large local inventory and if their inventory is too remote they offer little advantage over an online retailer like Amazon. With Amazon they can maintain some inventory of almost anything (scattered thoughout their various warehouses) and leverage their warehouse economies of scale to keep shipping costs down. Also, although it is a sore point with some people, their participation in the State tax process prevents states from losing revenue from the failing B&Ms. Economies changes over time and the internet has just become a magnified version of the old mail order catalog economy.

State tax process? Amazon only charges tax in states where they have to (i.e. states where they have warehouses).

Oh coolness! I see they have a version for FireFox. I'll give it a try. Thanks! :)

I didn't know that either. It would be nice to not have to go someplace to clothes shop, even though there is a little bit of fun trying things on. Maybe it really is time to cave in and get a Prime membership.

I found the tax situation to be more minor to me than I thought. Many 3rd Party sellers aren't getting taxes on their products in my state. My state governor is a whore for China and the theme of parts coming from a china resellers being exempt is holding up

Even when not, I don't worrry about it too much. I've become accustom to the convenience and saving gas to offset which until this past six months was non trivial.

Fear of state tax probably held Amazon back from offering a lot of services or products locally. Thy no longer have a reason to hold back. The whole state tax thing is going to backfire on the states.

My family spends a lot on christmas every year, and i'd say 90% of mine was done on amazon, yet again.

I have no problem paying taxes for my Amazon purchases. After all, I do want local govt services and projects to be properly funded.

Amazon was #1 for purchases, followed by Newegg and Etsy for my house.

I actually thought Amazon had free returns on all shipments. I know I bought sneakers from them last year and I returned them, because they didn't fit.

That said, I think I'm going to get some clothes at some mall today, but first I'm gonna have lunch with a Wookie.

I actually have no idea how the return policy works. I've never had to return anything before. But still, I order pretty much everything from them, even kitty food so maybe Prime would be a good investment.

OMG what hairy guy/girl were you lunching with? I hope not a wife or girlfriend.

Sir, I would love to take the bait, but I am unsure what type of game you are going for. Please advise what angle you are trying to set the hook.

  1. Amazon is evil, they stole Col. Sanders seat in the Pentaverate
  2. FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: Capitalism is bad, here's proof
  3. This newfangled interwebs confuses me, Get off my lawn!

I bought 100% of my gifts on Amazon this year, just as I have for the last 3 years... Screw going to an overcrowded mall. That goes for any time of the year really...

The reason why I started buying stuff online is because of the no tax. We are already income taxed, wtf is this sales tax.

I shopped and Costco/Sam's. Prices were a lot better on some really good items. By Amazon Prime, you won't be missed and your taxes as well.
