Hey Guys,

I ordered a MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G into my local shop on a black friday special, works out to be $636CAD with tax and after $30 MIR. I got that new Dell G-sync monitor so i was all hot and heavy to upgrade my GTX680 after realizing I cant run rocket league at full quality at 144fps lol.

They just got the card in today and now I'm kind of over it, i haven't paid anything yet so i can pull out if i want. Is it still worth it as an upgrade over my 680? For reference, the cheapest 980ti I can get is $268CAD more than what i'll pay for the 980 so it's not really an option. $636 is a stretch as it is.

In my personal opinion, spending that much on a 980 is sort of overboard. That being said I live in america, and spending any more than maybe $450 USD on a 980 is sort of silly as an OC 970 can match a reference 980 and costs a lot less. The 980 ti dwarfs the standard 980 and generally isn't all the much more money.. the 980 is a great card, it just doesn't make much sense spending 500 USD on a card that performs a little better than a 300 USD card. I don't think my 970 could do 144 fps on ultra at 1440p though

For additional reference the MSI 970 is $497CAD w/tax :(

GTX 970 - $497
GTX 980 - $636
GTX980ti - $904

Our dollar really isn't doing well. Maybe I should wait for the nextgen and our economy to recover.

Yeah, it's not a bad purchase. The GTX 980 was poor value on release because there was a gulf of $230 USD!

But the prices are now a lot closer. I don't see either card as a bad purchase at those CAD prices. In fact, with the GTX 970 priced that high, it's a worse value!

Yeah the black friday deal on the 980 was $140 off + 30 MIR so it's seems like a really good deal (in canada anyway). I have until EOD tomorrow to buy it at that price, currently got some ads up to try and sell my 680 for ~200 which seems fair based on what's on ebay.ca

I'd wait... Considering that 16nm cards will be incoming in 2016.

If you're going to listen to this guy be prepared for a good 6 months of lower settings on a 1440p monitor. Though if you're only worried about playing rocket league then the 680 would easily cut it.

How about finding a used 970 or used 290X? It would still be a nice upgrade. When new cards come out in 2016 you can sell it without taking a large financial hit.
