It would have been funny if the World Internet Conference censored the Chinese president's speech giving him a taste of his own medicine in front of the whole world. ;)

Chinese president Xi Jinping opened the World Internet Conference by telling world leaders to respect other nation's cyber sovereignty. The leader went on to say that every country has the right to govern the web in accordance with local laws, and that China stands against "internet hegemony." The move reinforces China's right to suppress information on a whim, like when it shuttered Instagram during the Hong Kong democracy protests.

Typically Chinese, you should all respect our disrespectful actions.... because they are ours

Mwahahahaha. China is thebiggest disrespecter of cyber-sovereignty there is. They have legions of hackers.

Respect is earned. Since you are demanding respect, I respect you even less now.

While it's like the in thing to get all upset over this, I don't see how it's a big deal to exercise censorship over the Internet. The US has been censoring television shows with broadcast standards for basically like ever and even arresting people for having data content that deviates from acceptable societal norms stored on their personal computers. China filters for indecent stuff at the point where their interwebs talks to the rest of the world and the US does it by getting warrants and raiding peoples homes after they already have illegal stuff on their computers. Yeah, they have different standards than we do, but it's prolly not fair to balk at that. The US is far from perfect if you sorta put it under a thoughtful, critical microscope. It's not bad, but it's got its problems just like anyplace else that's infested with the vermin we call humanity.

I've been told that North Korea is a fantastic place live. Have you ever considered about moving there as a permanent place of residence?

I'd happily join you if you can confirm it's as great as they say it is.

If anything China should be kicked off the Internet entirely. World would be better off with out their hacks.

WTF!!! Why the hell are the Chinese copying the Republican Party platform?

Wait, or is Donald Trump and Rand Paul stealing the Chinese Communist Party Platform?

It's not really surprising for China to take this stance. The problem is when they are able to essentially project their power, and as a result their censorship, to within the borders of the United States. They are able to do this due to the weak politicians we have in office. Tools like Obama are so afraid of "offending" the Chinese that they will basically do anything it takes to appease them. This is only going to get worse as China continues to grow economically. Does anyone really believe that our freedom of speech will be protected when China has us by the balls and the alternative is them enacting sanctions upon us, etc?

There is this obsolete 20th century idea that we can allow other countries like China to continue with their oppressive governments, and that these oppressive governments only affect the people within those borders. That sort of thinking simply does not work in a modern economically interconnected world that embraces concepts like free trade, etc. The more interconnected our world gets, the more China is in a position to impose their oppressive values on the rest of the world.

I do find it funny that they complain about us not respecting their censorship, when they don't even respect our patents, etc.

What's the deal with making fun of people you're apparently not fine with having their government repress? I'm as chauvinistic as the next guy, but this seems self-defeating.
