Fallout 4 Performance and Image Quality Preview @ [H]

LoL why the copy and paste post from other people in this thread? want to make that post count up?

I am about to purchase this game.

I will be using the rig in my sig.

Could someone please let me know a quick summary of what tweaks(ini, in game) i should make for the best experience, just to save me trawling through all threads trying to piece the info together?

It would be much appreciated.

Thank You

with a Titan X at 1400mhz?. set everything at max and enjoy.. ;)

Thank you I will take a look. Is gsync working correctly above 60fps?

Nope, you should cap your FPS to 60 as the game engine as any other bethesda/obsidian game.. most of the engine physics, lighting, particles and other couple of things are tied to refresh rate.. and you have to be able to maintain the FPS as close as possible to refresh rate or the game will start to behave wonky, crazy and fun at least. Anyway the game have a vsync enabled by default for the same reason.

Well thats pretty lame, so i should change ini file to turn off game vsync, then turn on gsync in nvidia options for best results? And cap to 60fps too?

Also, if my refresh rate is 144, am i able to cap there ok?

I picked up a Steam copy in the FS section yesterday, DL & installed. I fired it up and am in the first indoor set. There is extremely noticeable stutter even with the fps pretty much pegged at 60fps. I tried lowering the settings to high with no difference. Rig in siggy, I play at 1440p.

Is this a known issue and is there a fix? I read the thread and as far as using vsync through the NV control panel, do I need to launch the game from there as well?

Are you running it from your HDD's? I've seen some people report stuttering that went away once installed on an SSD. I have pretty much the same rig as you and mine is smooth as silk.

the beta patch goes RTM today, make sure have it.

^^^^ It's running off the 850 SSD's in RAID0, I think I can rule out spinning disk performance issues. :p

Where can I lay hands on the patch.. or do I just wait for Steam to update?

just make sure the game is at 1.2.

i assume it will patch automatically

Ive been running the beta for a bout a week, its super silky smooth on my system.

I would disable V-Sync in the NVCP for the game's profile and then use RTSS to limit the game to 59 FPS. The game's syncing method seems to conflict with traditional V-Sync and causes stutter.

^^^ That'll be funny if it works. I used to do the same thing to fix microstutter in BF4 when I was running xfiah. I'll see if it works, thanks!

^^^ There was an update that hit and installed last night, was that it? It did not have any impact on the in game stuttering I am experiencing.

Yes, this is the beta patch that has been out for a week or so.

ive been using the beta, its very smooth.

although i didn't really have any issues prior to opting in other than the !@#$%^ compass bug.

if you hit escape after loading a save, the version is on the menu on the bottom right.

I had the same issue. I disabled the in-game v-sync and forced it on through the NVIDIA Control Panel and that cleared it up.

I doubt this applies to many people, but I had some stuttering and horrible tearing that were caused by the fact that I had my bedroom TV plugged in as a second monitor on my main gaming PC. Even though it wasn't on at the time, the fact that it had different scaling settings from my desktop monitor was causing the problems. Just thought I'd mention it because after I pulled the HDMI cable out, FO4 ran smooth as silk. Might help someone.

^^^ Bah.. .ini tweak did not work either. I'll just wait till I'm ready to go all in before I sweat it. Have a few games qued up before I start it anyway.

Hint, hint, nudge, nudge, any idea when the full review will come out? ;)

Honestly, I am not even sure we should do one at this point. We are looking at adding it to our testing suite however.

In Techspot's review, they discovered a problem with the average framerate dropping from 106 to 72 FPS, when the memory speed in the BIOS, kept reverting back to 1333MHz instead of 2400MHz.

I'm wondering if this was an early game bug that has been patched now, or if it is still occurring. Normally memory speed doesn't make that much of a difference in games.
Unfortunately this isn't something that is normally tested, so unless you downclock your RAM to test it, people won't know if they are seriously handicapping their performance with lower speed memory. Maybe somebody can test it, to see if their performance tanks, or if it's just the way Techspot benchmarked the game.

This was on their i7-4770K rig with a GTX 980TI @ 1080p Ultra Quality settings benchmark.
http://www.techspot.com/review/1089-fallout-4-benchmarks/page6.html

Using Fraps they recorded 120 seconds of gameplay starting at the gas station where you meet your new best friend "Dogmeat". Then they walk down the road to the town of "Concord" where they did a lap of the town and ran through a skirmish with a few raiders, which is where the frame rate often fell to its lowest value.
Fallout 4 was tested using the ultra quality preset. This means TAA was the anti-aliasing method used and anisotropic filtering was set to x16. "Bokeh" depth of field was used and ambient occlusion was set to SSAO (high). Additional rendering features such as screen space reflections, wetness, rain occlusion, motion blur and lens flare were also enabled.

I've seen quite a few mentions that F4 can be greatly affected by memory speed on Skylake at least.
It doesnt matter for those running 60Hz but 100Hz+ it does.

Just picked up a 1440p GSync monitor and for whatever reason, having God Rays on at all (even on Low) completely murders my framerate and makes the mouse input super laggy. With them off it seems fine.

are you monitoring FPS? I think the 970 isn't enough to enjoy FO4 at 1440P with God Rays.. even 980TI struggle with higher GodRays levels, I have to use high Godrays to be able to maintain 60FPS as minimum so I can be locked at 60FPS due the crazy physics engine, also I think you should disable Gsync to play FO4 as I think it can have issues with the way the game manage physics and other things tied to Monitor refresh rate.

just set a framerate cap to avoid the game engine freaking out

Yeah, I did set a framerate cap to 60, but it definitely drops below 60 at times with God Rays on. At 1080p I could actually run with God Rays at Ultra for the most part and be okay. Now even with Low I get this lag/framerate drop even in Sanctuary with nothing else going on.

The framerate doesn't bother me so much as the mouse/input lag that seems to come with the slowdown. Not sure why that is happening, I disabled VSync (both in the nVidia CP as well as the FO4 .ini files).

people over reacted to God Rays being a performance killer

it's Shadow Distance that has much more impact on FPS imo

Fallout 4 is a very strange game engine

I've had instances in Sanctuary where my framerate goes below 40 FPS, but when I go out exploring and eventually return to Sanctuary, the same area and direction I'm looking at no longer have FPS problems

My rig is way lower end than your. I play with Godrays on and never get input lag or fps drops below 60. :) Oh yeah and my cpu is underclocked by 300 mhz. Muahah.

Hz is a measurement of voltage? :D I'm doing it all wrong.
