How has your experience been with the Asus ROG Maximus VIII Hero? Good, bad?

I bought this board on Black Friday due to getting it for about $165 after rebates but even at that price I'm now worried after thoroughly reading more user reviews and especially because I still cant find the 6700K at an affordable price so I probably wont be able to build my system until next year. I bought it for the supposedly great audio but even that I'm seeing many are saying is having issues. Sort wish I had grabbed the Gigabyte Gaming 7.

So how has your experience been with it? Your experience with the audio would also be great.

Get on the 1202 build - you should be fine. The early issues with some memory kits due to "tight" memory sub-timing rules have been sorted.

I paid $220 for mine and I think it was worth every penny. I've had for a 2-3 month and have had no issues. Overclocking is a breeze, and the board has great build quality. See my sig for what I used in my build.
I can't comment on the audio because I only used the onboard for a few weeks before bypassing it and hooking it up to my receiver via HDMI output on my video card.

I have nothing but problems with mine. I have swapped it three times and each and every time the sound issue has reoccurred. popping a cracking and bad blending and Asus isn't doing a damn thing to resolve it. I am at a point where after using nothing but asus in my builds for near 20 years I am just about done. I am in Canada and paid just over $300(thanks weak dollar) for the board and I am very unimpressed. no idea how to resolve this short of getting another board.

Thanks for the input dudes.

I keep reading about the audio issues over and over and the fact it seemingly has persisted so long on their high end boards tells me it probably wont be fixed this time around. Which is damn shame as the audio on this board is 60% why I bought it.

Also, does the popping and cracking happen whenever a game or music is played or does it happen in instances of using the mic?

Try the latest audio driver and update Sonic Studio. The initial version of SS, caused issues with DPC latency.

I too just bought one with crazy discounts and rebates...I haven't put my system together yet because I haven't been able to get out to microcenter for the 6700K. They seem to always have stock and the in store ONLY price is $359.

Its is a dpc latency issue and I will be removing all the asus software as it seems after some discussion with Dan_d that its related to sonic studio and the ai suite. removing sonic studio did drop latency but I hadn't removed the ai suite that is what I will do tonight and see if it resolves the issue. I will update here if it resolves the issue.

That is what my experience was with the Maximus VIII Impact.

I hadn't done a DPC latency test on my rig since pulling the Phoebus out due to shit driver support in Windows 10. Using the onboard audio I'm seeing DPC latency of 289µs. That's definitely on the high side compared to what I'm used to seeing but that's still within the acceptable range. Keep in mind though, I am NOT using AI Suite III or Sonic Studio on my system.

I had some issues with running my memory at XMP profile settings at first. It would frequently not boot, then restart with a failed overcook message.

Upgrading to the latest BIOS has resolved that issue and it seems like a good board to me. I like the layout and color scheme.

I have a creative Sound blaster ZXR, so I haven't tried the onboard audio. In fact I disabled it.

Almost every Z170 motherboard I've tested doesn't detect XMP timings correctly without at least a BIOS update. Many don't even do it after that.

Well dan_d you hit the nail on the head it was definitely asus software. I removed piece by piece the ai suite and the only one I could keep was ez update. I had it down to 4 items left in the suite and I was still seeing dpc issues so I just gave up and removed it all but the ezupdate. It has now run for 12 hours with no dcp issues. I actually like some of the ai suite items but due to the dcp issues I can't use this software.

Thanks Dan_d I was at my wits end trying to solve this, I hadn't seen anything about dcp being a problem in all my searches and never even thought to look there. Lets hope they resolve this so I can go back to using the core of the suite at least.

Glad I could help.

It's more than just detecting SPD XMP timings correctly. IIRC, DDR3 had similar compatibility issues with new Intel chipset based platforms when it first came out 8 years ago. Both memory and BIOS camps worked together to straighten things out. I'm guessing the same thing is going on for DDR4/Z170 as we speak.

You actually managed to find one? I have been looking for this board for a month. It seems that only three sites sell it. Newegg, Microcenter, and something like SuperBizz. Two of them have been out of stock for a month, and Microcenter only has in store pickups. I have the board on autonotify, but have never gotten a notification. The only other place to buy one are from price gougers on Amazon which are selling them for $400+.

When am I going to be able to get my hands on this motherboard? I can't figure out why what seems to be the Cadillac of 1150 motherboards is consistently out of stock.
