Hey all,

5.5 years later the G500 is apparently starting to die. Seems to be an intermittent connection in the left mouse button making it very difficult to drag and drop anything or move windows.

It's been a good mouse over that time though (feels like I just bought it).

I've been a fan of Logitech mice for some time now. My mouse previous to this one was an MX500.

They last for a while, so I can't even remember what I had before that. May have been a Microsoft Optical mouse or something.

Anyway, I was just perusing Logitech's mice, and it looks like they have changed a bit. The new styling looks neither visually appealing nor comfortable to me. The G502 Proteus Core looks more like it belongs in the JJ Abrams Star Trek respin, than on my desk... I liked that the G500 was subtle enough to not scream "Razer Boomslang"

The MX500 and G500 were very similar in shape and feel and I liked them. Is there something similar out there now that anyone is aware of?

Essentially, what I think I want is a gaming mouse, that doesn't really look like a gaming mouse, and is more focused on ergonomics than appearances.

Maybe I'll just find a G500 on ebay? Then I ought to be good until 2020 :p

Thanks,
Matt

The G500s is the direct replacement to the G500. Exact same size and shape as the G500, just with some updated internals and slightly different paint. The s model did have some issues early on, but were fixed with new firmware and there is almost zero chance you would get one that included the old buggy firmware now.

I personally have the G500s, and it kicks ass. I got mine earlier this year and it shipped with the updated firmware. Zero issues so far.

The G500s is about to go EOL and be completely replaced by the G502. The G502 is a completely different design.

Thanks, I saw that one. I like the shape (and presumably since it looks the same shape as my G500) feel. The updated higher res sampling would be nice... That is one damned ugly paint job though...

Seriously considering it, but would have preferred if they kept the old styling from the G500.

Hmm...

I wonder ho hard it would be to pop out the top plastic cover bit, and plasti-dip it. :p

I recently moved from a G500 to a Steelseries Sensei I've been quite pleased with the Sensei ... I really like the fit more than my G5 before or G500 later...

Weak, intermittent left clicks in my last 3 Logitech mice are causing me to want to look at a different brand. What, not sure.

how does the g502 proteus core compare to the old mx518 in terms of quality, feel ect? Mine is still kicking since 2006 lol

I haven't used one, so I am not the best to comment, but just looking at it, it ought to feel VERY different in the hand :p

The G500 is still my daily driver. I've bought 3 of them, I never blame them for their malfunctions, I abuse the shit out of them. So, I second your original thought of buying a new one. :D

Sorry to bump this old thread....

Been using the 502 for a while now and while the hand cramps have stopped (due to the narrower shape) I'm still not loving it. I have a G500 at work (occasional miss-click), and it just feels so good and familiar as I've been using the 5 series since the mx518.

I'm not opposed to going to anther brand, I RMA'd my G500 twice so it seems the quality is no longer there and they don't seem to have a proper 5series successor. Any suggestions?

Have you tried the G602? The shape might work for you. It's often overlooked, but is a pretty sturdy mouse.

I tried the Steelseries Rival for a while.

I liked the shape and feel of it, but I had problems with odd jumpy motions, and the pointer moving on its own.

In the end I returned it. It might have just been a defective mouse though. Not sure.

I'm using the 502 Proteus core now as well.

I've never gotten used to the appearance (butt ugly imho) but I find the feel to be OK. Even with all the weights in it, it is lighter than the G500 was (and I like more heft in my mice), and the smaller size doesn't fit my hands as well, but its OK.

I went from MX500 to G5 to G500 and now to G502, and IMHO the G502 is just a downgrade for me, but it's good enough to be usable, and I haven't found anything else out there that's better yet.

It's too bad they couldn't just keep the G500 on the market.

That's the thing about the 502, the sensor is top of the line and the mouse is highly rated for FPS, it just feels off.

I don't know why Logitech would abandon a design they've been using for 10 years, they had a strong following with the 5series. I'll keep using the 502 I guess, I just wish there was something that felt more familiar. I suppose I'll have to wait for Logitech to realize their mistake a go back to the old design. :(

the G602 looks pretty nice from a shape and size perspective.

What kills it for me is that it is wireless. I will absolutely not buy a wireless mouse under any circumstance.

Fair enough. I went wireless when traveling with laptop, the less wires the better. From there for some reason my desktop mouse started bugging me, took me a little while to figure out I really got used to that little extra mobility from being wireless.

Even with 500 polling Logitech really should've put in the wired option on the G602 like they did on the G700 though, their regular price on it is more than high enough...

Matt,

I also had the G500 for about 6 years until it started having close to the same issues you are having. Having really loved the way the G500 was in shape, size, and tracking I was having a hard time finding something similar. I ended up with the Roccat Kone xtd. It is the same size and has a shape like the G500 but even more comfy to me because of the material. It has led's that you can disable if you would like or make it whatever color you want. I prefer no led's so it is just black and looks really good. Tracks great, really good sensor, and has less what I would call stutter than the logitech. Its pricey but they all are if good I guess.
