Metro Vacuum ED500 is $47 @Amazon!!!!! Hot!

Okay... so the thing came in smelling like oil (as in the box and the unit). I used it to blow some air. The air it blew out smelled like oil. After a minute or so, the entire condo smell like oil and I had to open the window.

Is this normal...?

no. Send it back. When they assembled it I bet they lube certain parts and a worker probably over lubed something. I would be careful because if it is actual oil it could start an electrical fire.

Send it back and purchase another one from B@H. Just in case it is a batch issue.

geez. How dirty are houses? This seems like overkill unless you service computers regularly. That said it would be great my woodmshop.

I live in the Deep South. There are farms everywhere surrounding me. Dust covers everything; if you wash your car it will be dusty by the end of the day. I take my PC outdoors to blow it out once a month. Using the blower I can clean the fans, dust covers and filters, case, motherboard, etc. in a matter of minutes.

This blower is very powerful. When cleaning computer fans, I typically place a pencil into it to keep the fans from turning. I have read stories of fans getting messed up by people trying to see how fast they can blow them. The blower puts a large force onto a small area so it will make the fan turn at an angle instead of how the manufacturer intended. Thus you need to keep it from turning while servicing the fan.

The dust in blower style video cards doesn't stand a chance against the Metro blower. Once again I hold the fan still, and blow like hell through it. Everything is nice and clean in less than a minute. Same goes for water coolers like the H100i. The fins on the radiator look like a million bucks in seconds.

All in all it has been my best purchase over the years. Canned air is $20 a can here and I purchased them quite regularly. Highly recommended at full price.

I went ahead and started my exchange with Amazon. I let it sit there for a bit to hopefully air out, but nope... turn it on and the whole condo (or at least half) smells like oil in less than 1 minute...

Thankfully Amazon is letting me exchange it, despite it being on a lightning deal. Granted it's not much of a lightning deal considering it's just 12$ more everywhere else (actually less when you consider Amazon charges taxes...).

it takes you a few mins to clean a computer? You must the really through because with my data vac and a PC that hasn't been cleaned in years took me all of 60-90 seconds :/ Plus a bit of dying from the massive cloud of dust.

Okay well the second one just came in... and it also smells like oil. Maybe even worse than the first one. Props to Amazon for the stupid ridiculous delivery speed, though. Like they had the replacement here same day.... on a Sunday... ...

... Wtf?

Anyway I'm too lazy to go around exchanging this thing. So what I'm going to do is basically light some incense (that I happen to have some of after a failed "kill all of these phorid flies experiment") near it and then point it out the window with the incense burning near it. I'll stop it every 10 mins or so to let it cool off. Hopefully with some time it'll smell like incense instead of oil... I'm probably gonna piss the neighbors off considerably.

For Amazon, I'm debating between a 2 and 3 star review for the product. Probably 2 stars due to two tries. It's my policy to knock off about one star per attempt, with some exceptions.

email the company. See if they know of this issue. It appears to be a batch issue. Maybe they can send you a replacement from a different batch.

I would just be careful because if its actual oil you could have it catch on fire. For it to smell that bad it must be a lot of oil.

I don't know that I would let it run for ten minutes straight... After just a couple minutes of continuous use mine gets really hot. I tend to use it in 15-30 second bursts. I don't recall much of a smell coming from mine either... :/

That all being said... These things are such a GREAT investment! They put out a ton more air than canned air and don't suffer from the other negatives either (i.e cans getting cold and losing performance, bitterant on your keyboard, store employees looking at you like you're trying to get high when you buy more than two cans, price, enviroment). I also like it a lot more than an air compressor because you don't have to worry about water in the reservoir.

I've been using this for years. In fact, I have a modified spout that's even more powerful than what it ships with. I am not sure if the guy is still selling the metal tips anymore.

The bottom of this thing picks up a lot of dust if you're in a dirty area. Make sure you keep an eye on it and clear it of dust.

Also, I would suggest you use a small fine brush to clear off circuit boards of the fine dust as this thing will not totally remove dust for all surfaces.

FYI price is down a bit on Amazon again, $48.44. Picked one up since i missed it last time.

One of the bets little tools I've ever purchased. Highly recommended.

Just got this today, USPS guy looked pissed to be working on Sunday delivering for Amazon. :)

Very nice little machine, well worth the money. I'll be using this a lot instead of canned air.
I'm a self-employed IT guy so it will get plenty of use.

No strong oily smell either. It does have a "newly manufactured item" smell, but not bad.
I think some people are just sensitive to that kind of thing. I suppose they don't like "new car"
smell either. :)
