well shit. I was hoping I could call discover and do the price drop protection on my hd598.

they decided to put the SE black version on sale instead of the regular one...

I do like the headphones.

Yeah, i figured this will happen eventually... Every single year i miss every HD598 sale, and now when i just bought AKG Q701 i finally had a chance to get these too. I really hope they are not too similar and i can justify keeping them both, if not most likely HD598's are going back. Im in love with Q701s, dents in my skull or not, dammit. But i really want to love Sennheisers too. Somebody help me :(

Finally a decent headphone and I've missed this deal a couple times previously. Not gonna miss this one. Thanks OP.

Put a new headband on your 701s for fucksake. Like the first thing I did was get rid of that ribbed POS and put a leather strap on instead.

That being said buy the Senns because they are nice cans and you need a backup pair.

Seconded! I really love my Q701, but that headband is garbage. I made a few different ones. Started by just cutting up an old belt to test it out, worked fine. Picked up a sheet of scrap leather and some screws, also worked fine just having the loose leather. Settled on wrapping the belt in the leather to make it a bit firmer, and stuck with that. Works great.

Yes, i will definitely fix that, i just didn't want to modify anything in case i had to return them for whatever reason. Had them for just 2 days, ghetto-fixed the headband for right now, but i'm pretty sure at this point that i'm keeping them.

I'm reeeeally tempted to buy this. When I'm at my computer I use my STAX and my Q701 is my "portable" set, but it's not very portable considering that it really kinda needs an amp.

So is this a steal or what? Price history data is sort of sparse other than Amazon's stated $249.99 usual price. I already have a bunch of shitty headphones that do the job and always wanted to try some "audiophile" grade cans.

Lowest price ever I think, beating out last year's price of $99.00 on Black Friday. Pretty sleek looking all black color too

It's a great deal. Never seen them this low.

Always wanted a set but couldn't stand the color. At this price and in black, I was all over it when I saw it go live last night.

Amazing, was considering getting an M50x but this is a crazy good deal. $109.99 in Canada - impulse buy!

Damn, I wish these were a closed design. How much noise can be heard outside of these? The whole reason I wear headphones is to not bother others around me. So tempting though.

There's a good bit of sound leakage, obviously -- if you're in a cube or something the people next to you will likely hear whatever you're listening to if you turn it up much.

I couldn't resist the good deal and got in on this. I'm a big of a newb when it comes to good headphones... What would be a good dac / amp for this?

the resistance is low enough (50 ohms) that you don't need an amp

one might help with the sound, but i've never had to use one with my HD 555 or 595

Extremely comfortable headphones.

Agreed about both the sound leakage and not needing an amp for these. They're almost completely open, so you'll hear everything around you and everyone nearby will hear your music unless you're at very low volume.

I have the hd600, hd595, and several other pairs of headphones. The 595/598 are awesome, and at this price offer almost unbeatable bang-for-the-buck. If you don't wanna spend the extra coin on an amp, the 598 are excellent. Unamped, my hd595 sound better than my hd600 (both sound great, but the hd600 really need an amp to bring out their best or else it's just a waste of money vs buying the 598s).

imo these are better than most other headphones that hit this price range like the Audio Technica m50x (albeit the m50 are a closed design, more portable, and have detachable cables). Note that these are not good cans for on-the-go. They have a 3m long cable, and can fall off your head easily. Even a drop from a low height can potentially pop out the transducer, ruining the headphones. Happened to me.

Coconubboy, what other headphones do you have?

I'm about to give into this deal.
I've never open headphone before but always wanted to try it.
Anyone wants to give me a good reason for open headphone?

with open cans, if your phone or doorbell rings and you're playing music you can still hear it

also open cans supposedly sound better, but i can neither confirm nor deny because i haven't owned a decent pair of closed cans

Can't decide whether to get the M50x or this, or both.

So this is good for home usage (not the bus, train, airplane, on the go)?

And the M50x is good for traveling uses?

I have M50 currently (only different from M50X b/c of its non-detachable cord) and maybe I can upload my review later on if I buy this one. Comparing 598 with M50.

M50, after a while, gives me a bit of headache because of its pressure and I want something that won't give me that.

I can wear similar Sennheiser models (555, 595) for 4 or 5 hours at a time and not feel any discomfort. And that's with glasses on.

Sometimes I forgot that I'm even wearing headphones.

I snagged these as fast as I could....thanks for the heads up!

Edit- My only concern would be the leatherette padding. Those things usually dry and crack over time.

Have had a pair of 575s for travel for 12 years, bit on this one cause the price was just too good.

If these get sold out look at the Samson SR950's if you want some inexpensive but good headphones. They get awful close in terms of sound quality but tend to run for $40 or less.

fuck I am temped... but this would be my 4th pair of cans I bought this week.

Bit. First pair of decent headphones ever, never fancied myself as an audiophile and I don't really own high quality equipment justifying top tier cans, but at this price why not.

Thanks, in for one.

I noticed the Q701 also mentioned earlier on in this thread are a similar discount on amazon (65%) making them only ~70 more. Would anyone be able to put into laymen(non-audiophile) terms what the difference is if any? Or whether or not they are worth the extra $? I did find a review on another forum comparing the two but there was too much audiophile jargon going on for me to really decipher anything meaningful. I just moved into a new place where desktop speakers are not ideal so I'm just looking for a nice set of headphones. But since theres no b&m where I can try out different ones, I'm not real sure what I'm looking for.

Thanks op. Never heard these but I figure it's good for music around the house

we're going off topic in this thread with all the Q701's talk, but just a quick one.

Unfortunately my HD598 didn't arrive today (as usual with Amazon's shitty same day delivery) so i can't give you quick comparison, but Q701's are not "plug and play" type of headphone, meaning that you need some kind of amp to drive them properly, or powerful sound card like Asus Essence ST/STX/STX2 or Creative Sound Blaster ZXR or such. If you just plug them into your mobo (depending on the quality) they are not going to sound that good (thin, no bass, no volume etc...)

Does that make more sense? They need some juice to power them to deliver that sonic bliss they are capable of.

I have both. The AKGs really beg for amping whereas the HD598s don't and I think they're different enough to justify keeping both in my opinion, especially at this price.

I don't mind the headband.

And to answer another poster's question, the sound leakage can be significant. My wife complains when I game late at night even when I'm down the hall in my office.

Generally, and at this quality in particular, they'll present a larger soundstage so they'll sound more like speakers near/around your head instead of in/over your ears.
