Samsung 950 PRO [Official Thread]

I've been waiting for a sell on the 950 and this morning Fry's has it with my promo code for $298, I'll pick it latter this morning. I was hoping for Amazon but I don't think they will be this low? Hopefully I don't run into many problems with the install of the OS....Here's the link to fry's website, check out the price of the 850 Pro 512 gig for $198.

Because this question needs to be asked at least once in the official thread for the first consumer NVME ssd:

Q - Can I install Windows 7 on this drive with a bog standard disk?
A - No

Q - Can I install Windows 7 on this drive with some tinkering?
A - Yes

Q - What tinkering is required?
A1 - You can add the NVME drivers to the Windows7 iso, and then re-burn the disk.
A2 - You can add the NVME driver from a USB key mid-install.

Feel free to correct if necessary

plus manufacture drivers for MOBO and NVMe drive.

Up and running, six minutes to load W10 Threshold 2, from a usb 3.0 thumbrive using rufus to do the thumbrive using GPT. Only one hickup on the install windows only got to the format and partition page and wouldn't go any farther so I shutdown restarted and bingo it installed fine. Using the Samsung nvme drivers and Magician 4.9....2600 reads and 1562 wires, atto scores where lower same for assd 2200 reads 1441 writes. Still installing all my stuff, doesn't take very long to install stuf...lol

Ok we are all experiencing low iops on magician so that software must be bugged or not good to test the drive.

All the read iops I've seen are in the 170000 range in Magician ?

what is that in MBps? 664Mbps? That matches Crystal diskmark assuming i did the math write.

I have ~750 MBps in 4K QD32 so thats like 192K right?

I think that 300K is pure optimistic garbage.

I got my drive yesterday, but haven't had a chance to put it in yet. Trying to figure out how to backup my OS install on my XP941 and then restore it to this drive when I only have the one m.2 slot. That and figuring out some time to mess with it all

Would this work on an Asus Z97M-PLUS motherboard? I'm keen to buy this drive, but can't find the answer

i thought board side it was all bios based? certainly msi gave the impression that recent bios updates had enabled nvme boot support on win7...

is that one of the few boards that lack it if any exist? I have not heard of any board not being updated especially by a major manufacture but its possible.. Just check the BIOS updates.

my drive arrive at 300K IOPS with crystal disk mark, yes.

Samsung stated that the drive starts throttling at 75c.
After some smashing on the drive my goes up tp 68c.

what is your max temp?
I like my X99 Deluxe since the drive is mounted vertically and I have an intake fan that kindly blows fresh air on the 950 PRO.

What app are you using to read the 950 temps with?

Thanks a lot! I just ordered a infrared temp gauge...been wanting one for a while..

Aida is more precise than your gauge :)
Disk will throttle at the disk ensor reading not at the infrared reading :)

I don't know if my MB has senors that will work with ADA I had a trail version for like 30 days and it didn't show temps on my Samsung 840 ssd...

I used HD Sentinel and card sits below my 980TI and while running F@H and running Crrystal Disk Mark I had peak 60C

Under normal usage so far aka using it for media ATM I see Daily Maxes at 46-52. Benching got me 56/60 maxes.

Mins are 25-30C Except one day was min 45 so that might have been the folding day. I haven't been Folding regularly lately. Been using PC too much to bother with it.

I just tried the HD Sentinel trial and it showed the 950 but no temps, I sent off a reort we'll see what they come up with.

I got my drive yesterday, but haven't had a chance to put it in yet. Trying to figure out how to backup my OS install on my XP941 and then restore it to this drive when I only have the one m.2 slot. That and figuring out some time to mess with it all

Still trying to figure out how to do this. So far I have done the following:

1. Backed up my PC to my home server, and also made a clone of the OS drive via EZ Gig 4.3.8.

2. Powered off the PC, took out the XP941, put in the 950 Pro, installed Win10 on it from USB via UEFI mode. Everything worked great and drive performance was as expected.

3. Tried to boot to EZ Gig to clone back and it doesn't see the 950 Pro.

4. Tried to boot to WHS Client restore disk and it doesn't see the 950 Pro. I even pulled open the backup on another computer to grab the drivers out of the backup set, but it still didn't like it.

5. Figured out I needed to boot from UEFI for those to work, but neither has a command line version I can start from the command line function in Win10's advance boot recovery options.

6. Tried to cook my own version of UBCD using their ubcdtousb script, but my PC doesn't like to boot from it (goes straight into the BIOS).

7. Put the XP941 back in, ran Win 8's System Image Backup (under file history - like the Win 7 Windows Backup) and backed up my system to my home server that way. Win 8 USB media creator tool is not working, but I was able to find and use the Win 8.1 version. Put the 950 pro back in. Had to put in an Intel NIC, but I was able to see the share where the backup was. First time trying it failed. I tried again and it failed again. Looked at the "More Details" and it said something about seeing a USB drive as a system drive. I shut it off and walked away for a while.

8. Went back to repeat step 7 to see if I can get the exact details on the error message. This time the boot menu had my USB drive in a different spot and it allowed me to restore from the backup. However, upon reboot the system ends up going straight into the BIOS, even if I choose the Windows Boot Manager as the boot option.

I'm thinking that my only option right now might be a clean install on the new drive. However, with Microsoft not having the Win 8 Media Creator tool available (I can only find 8.1), it might meant that I have to upgrade this drive to Windows 10 first, so it can eat my Win 8 key and spit it back out as Win 10. I should be able to put the 950 Pro back in and install Win 10 with my Win 8 key (IIRC). I have copies of all the data from the current drive, but I'm just trying to avoid having to reinstall everything, including redownloading some games/programs, and having to retweak my settings to get everything back the way I like it. PITA

On top of all that crap, I lost the screw that holds down the drive. I was able to rig something up with another screw and a washer, but I'd rather have the original. Anyone know where I can get a replacement? I'm guessing Asus is my only option.

I used Acronis True Image Home 2015 to make image to USB stick from my XP941. Restored it to 950 Pro using same method (only using Restore instead). Total time was about 25 mins.

Will this work with the 3-day free trial on the 2016 edition, or do I have to buy a full to do restores? Will it work with a USB to SATA drive adapter? My drive is about 62GB used, and that's bigger than any USB stick I have laying around.

Why don't.use samsung data migration?

This won't work for me because I don't have a way to attach the new drive via USB or anything.

No idea on the free trial thing. I can only tell you what I used worked fine for me. You can get a 128GB USB Key drive for $30.

You don't need to.
Samsung Data Migration can migrate the OS wherever is installed on another Samsung SSD, wherever is installed, SATA or M.2 no problem.
I used it to switch from my old SSD to the 950 PRO.

He isnt in the same situation as you. He is going from a Samsung XP941 already in the only M.2 slot he has access on the board to a 950Pro M.2 which he has no other method of connecting to his motherboard.

To the OP, you could always get one of these for the 950 Pro and then do a migration:

ah ok sorry, I was out of contest.
in this case no windows software can do the job since once installed the 950 PRO he will have no access to windows.

he need a linux live distro to do the job but a drive (usb pen or external/internal hard drive) is needed to save the temp image.

Hy guys, can someone show what the exact staff that need to be set in bios for best speed with a 950 Pro ? I have Asus motherboard and only boot in legacy mode and take like 5 second with a sighn like this ''- ''and then windows take like 15 second to load, much worse then my old OCZ Agility 3 60 Gb :(
