My D-Link DGL-4100 finally died after 8 years, so I'm looking for a good replacement. Can someone recommend me a good gigabit router with at least four LAN ports? Ideally I'd like a wired router, but they seem to not be made for the consumer market anymore. If I have to go wireless, I don't care about it's wireless capabilities as I will be disabling that. Budget would be under $100.

Steps to successful deployment:
  1. Purchase Ubiqiti ERL-3
  2. Download latest firware from Ubiquiti
  3. Once item has been setup, install latest firmware
  4. Configure router
  5. Set it and forget it

ERL doesn't have enough ports for OP.
I'd suggest he go with EdgeRouter X

Four ports, nothing else. Fast, rock solid so far.

I was looking at this one earlier today, but my networking knowledge isn't the greatest. How difficult is the setup process? I'm assuming I'd have to configure ETH0 to be a WAN port for my cable modem? As long as nothing needs to be done in command line I should be good.

You can go through a wizard on the edgerouter X and it is stupid simple to setup. Most tasks like DHCP scopes can be setup via GUI.

Simple setups are simple. There is an included restorable configuration included onboard for simple DHCP akin to most soho setups.

Why not a ubiquiti and a gigabit switch?

Keep in mind these are routers that require a clean shutdown to avoid file system corruption.

they have a wonderful interface now i would say it is about as easy as using dd-wrt...

I got the 8 port one at work it has yet to lock up the ap tho they used to lock up all the time now only every so often need a soft reset... Honestly though i don't know if i can cough up the premium price these Ubiquiti wants...

That said my Asus 68u has given me similar speeds and only recently seems to be degrading on me. I would probably go for another Asus...

I've deployed the ERL at a few client sites with notoriously flaky power and staff who are rather careless (accidentally unplug etc) and never had an issue.

Clearly, i would always recommend an elegant shutdown, but alas, no issues to date.

Despite many popular misconceptions, the ERL does not have switch ports, these are ethernet ports, it can do switching but uses software+CPU. I would use the erl-3 and then buy a <$20 gigabit 5 port switch to put behind it.

For setup, once you are upgraded to latest firmware there is a wizard that will get you going in <5min. I personally have not used the ERL-X so cannot comment on anything regarding setup. I would presume it has the same OS as the edge-based products.

I haven't had any shutdown issues with mine either however some have and they warn about it in the documentation so I felt it was prudent to mention it.

FWIW I currently run mine wig all ports switched in software with a fair amount of traffic and no performance problems.

I would say ER X and if you have multiple POE devices 24v then the SFP version is a great buy.

Today a co-worker of mine borrowed me a spare EdgeRouter PoE he wasn't using. I played around with it, and ordered an ER X shortly thereafter. I really liked the interface, and it was easier than I thought it'd be to configure.

Thanks for all the advice.

Why? He won't be using WiFi on the router... The Ubiquiti hardware is a step beyond the D-Link consumer nonsense...

Edit: holy crap that thing is both ugly and expensive. I'm not yet convinced that isn't a prop from the X-Files.
