2015 Samsung 4k TV as a Monitor Set Up Guide

Does these TV act like computer monitors when you shut pc off then screen goes automatically standby or you must every time use tv remote to turn on and off? And does screen turn off same way like monitor if you have power settings 10 min screen off in control panel?

This is one of the areas of compromise.

There is a shutoff timer once the signal goes out. It's not instantaneous as it is with monitors. The lowest setting is 15min.

It will not wake up on its own. You need to press the power button (on TV or remote) in order to do so.

As I see it this is a very minor annoyance and a tradeoff for getting a quality, size and resolution today that just does not exist in traditional monitor form.

So this means if I put control panel power options screen shut off time after 1 minute idle and then on TV shutoff timer 15min means that TV shut off after 16 minutes idleing?

Yep.

After one minute, the screen will go blank, and be replaced with a "No signal" message, which will stay for 15 minutes, followed by the screen turning itself off.

In order to be wake back up a power button (ether on the remote or on the TV itself will have to be pressed.

I struggled with sharpness on my 65" 7005. Short story is, that the in TV adjustments are seriously broken.

Brightness and contrast must be left at the horrible defaults, only the backlight works as intended. Also, instant on needs to be disabled, as the TV often times breaks during use. Text might get a color shadow, that disappears by a reboot.

I have yet to figure a way to adjust this TV, without blurring it. In short, if you do not calibrate it with a hardware tool, like Spyder5, I simply cannot recommend this TV to anyone.

For UHD, 444 chroma, 60Hz, the pixels are strongly influenced by the neighboring pixel in the vertical direction. The pixels might loose half of their intensity. If you adjust your screen.

I posted samples in the main thread about that:

Got my 40" JU6500 the other day. ($550 on TechForLess) Successful 4K @ 60Hz 4:4:4 with my EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0 and a 6' Monoprice CL2 rated HDMI cable. Looks great, and I pretty much have the color and everything calibrated good.. just have to work on getting the black levels slightly darker.

Revision 2.1

  • This guide was written based on my JS9000 model. All of these models (JU6500, JU6700, JU7100, JU7500, JS7000 JS8500, JS9000) are very similar, but there are slight differences. This guide should still be mostly applicable for all of them.

  • Can anybody please tell me if Samsung UA40JU6470 (Asian Version http://bit.ly/1LhdQFm) and/or Samsung UA40JU6670 (Asian version http://bit.ly/1LWiPyQ) can work at 4k@60hz with 4:4:4 chroma ?

    All the reviews I see are either for Samsung UN40JU6500 (USA version http://**************/1ZOfPZB ) (confirmed 4k@60hz 4:4:4) or Samsung UE40JU6740 (EU version http://**************/1MxiL2W ) or UE40JU6670 (EU version http://**************/1Pr3pTL ) (confirmed 4k@60hz 4:4:4)

There is no information available if I can use these two models as a computer monitor with 4k@60hz 4:4:4 (Samsung UA40JU6470 (Asian version http://bit.ly/1LhdQFm) and/or Samsung UA40JU6670 (Asian version http://bit.ly/1LWiPyQ) )

In my country only these two models are available from series 6. The only reason I will be buying either of these two will be for a computer monitor that can do 4k@60hz 4:4:4

Can someone tell me if it is possible to play league of legends on those TVs ? Im not competitive player but this is the game i mostly play.

I have never played League of Legends, but I don't see why it would be any different from any other game.

What are your concerns?

Unfortunately I have no information about non-US versions.

Someone in the New Samsung 4k for everyone. thread might know more.

I fear the input lag will be too big and it will make league of legends unplayable :/

Well, the input lag is - in game mode - probably lower than any other panel I have ever owned.

It's more than fast enough for FPS gaming. I can't imagine that it wouldn't be fast enough for strategy games.

Thank you for the answer. Im gonna buy one of those Tvs for sure league of legends / wildstar will be epic on 48 inch

22ms is too much input lag for you??

Sometimes it is difficult to find the input lag for the older panels people are currently using, as they didn't always test for this.

(I had a tough time finding the figures for my Dell U3011, and it is only 5 years old. People use screens for a LONG time)

TV's also have a reputation of having high input lag.

So what this means is that many people who are shopping simply don't know what they currently have and what they are used to, and thus have no idea if the 22ms of these TVs is good or bad.

Anyone know of any +25' hdmi cables that will work with RGB 4:4:4?

Last I looked into this, 10' to 15' were the most anyone had gotten to work properly.

They may have more information over in the other 2015 Samsung thread (for everyone). This one was really only intended as a set up guide.

Alright thanks, also props on the guide.

Have any of you guys compared the Philips BDM4065UC to the Samsung JU6500 40" 4k TV's?

I know the philips has displayport input and more monitor like, just curious if the Samsung is a better value considered it's a good bit cheaper.

I previously had the 21:9 Dell U3415W and got tired of the continuous bouts with games that did not support that resolution. Most recently with Fallout 4, a game I spent more time editing .ini files instead of playing. The old adage, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" came into play and i'm glad I did.

I'm really glad Zarathustra[H] put together this guide. I picked up the 40" JU6500 last night and it looks great after setting it up. I still plan on doing some display/color configuration, but at default settings it looks really good. Fallout 4 looks great in 4K, and now the UI elements look as they should!

I just made the time a couple of days ago for a full calibration with my SpectraCal C6 HDR. This set has some wacky gamma behavior in Game mode :/

What stinks about this panel is 4:4:4 4K mode the input lag shoots up. I need to find a 4K Tv that can do 4:4:4 4K in the ~20ms input lag range.

My question would be why, when it is impossible to tell the difference between 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 (game mode of this panel) in game?

The only time 4:4:4 really makes a difference is with small high contrast colored text. Everything else looks exactly the same.

In game I can switch back and forth between game and PC mode and not tell a difference in quality at all, once properly set up.

Even on the desktop I can barely tell, until I open a webpage with colored small text.

I can tell - night and day on anything text and clarity in games. So, it stays in PC mode.

Hi!
I have the same problem! I have an LG 21:9 34 inch and most of the games don't support that resolution. Im so tired of that.

My doubt is the following guys...
- Curved JU6500 40 inch - 690e
- Curved JU7500 48 inch - 1020e

There is no 40 inch option for JU7500... and im afraid 48 might be too much.
The key difference is that 7500 series is a 120hz panel where the 6500 is only 60 correct? Or do I also get 24p in 7500 ?

What do you guys recommend. I need to take the decision today :\
Unless you know other shops in Europe with these prices...

4k Gaming is Amazing.

Yeah, it actually compels me to buy a 980ti or wait for pascal. One has to see a game at 4K on a large display to truly understand it's appeal. 1080p just looks bad, plus at 4k I really don't need AA anymore, maybe just a bit of SMAA.

on the 40" JU6500 the only HDMI port which can be UHD enabled is port 1. Love the tv / monitor everyone at work is commenting on it and with the price of the dell 34" ultrawide being the same I do not see a reason not to go the tv route. I spend most of my day in VS or outlook.

It's the same for the 6700 (only UHD on HDMI1) and furthermore, I can't seem set the type of HDMI1 to PC. I renamed it to PC but the type setting is not there with a long press. I tried setting it up again like new and the only options are like cable TV and antenna. Weird. Everything else seems to work fine though. It was VERY fussy about HDMI cables and getting 60hz @ 4k res working. I finally got it working though.. games do look stunning.

So can anyone confirm the inability to set the type on HDMI1 on 6500/6700 models? "Edit Device Type" is just missing on HDMI1 on my 6700, but it's there for all the other inputs. Really weird. Regardless input lag seems reasonable - so whatever mode it's in looks good and is fast.

EDIT: I figured it out. I had to delete the universal remote setting on that input - then I can set the type to PC. I'm still getting random blank screens though on windows start - hoping that's just the HDMI cable though. A reseat of the cable recovers it. I think this 15' cable is just on the fringe of tolerance for HDMI 2.0 to work.

I was waiting for someone else to respond to this question, as I haven't tested (I use a MediaBridge 6' cable) but I believe the 10' version of this cable does work. Hopefully someone else can confirm.

I am using a 15' media bridge cable now and it was the only HDMI cable I had that I could get 4k and 60hz to work with. I have had a couple times where the screen goes blank on windows start. I can re-plug the HDMI cabled at the TV to recover it usually. I think the cable might be causing that or Afterburner, which I have stopped on windows start and no blank screens since. I just launch it later once the desktop has been on a little bit. I have a 6' SecurOMax HDMI 2.0 certified cable coming tomorrow thought. Those longer media bridge cables "work" but may have some reliability issues... YMMV

Yeah, since I typed what you quoted above, I have picked up a 10' mediabridge cable, and it works great for me. No issues, just like the 6' version.

Cool - glad it's working for you. My 6' certified hdmi 2.0 cable comes today.. I am still having random black screens right after windows boots to the desktop... I can reseat the HDMI cable at the TV and recover it though. I guess it just needs another handshake. I am hoping this long cable is just making the connection unstable and the new cable fixes it. When I was gaming I didn't have a single blank screen though. It's only just after windows hits the desktop, theres about a 10 second window and if it makes it through that it seems fine.

Weird. I might try a driver clean and re-install without the 3d stuff if the new cable doesn't work.

edit: I guess I can try swapping my video cards around also so GPU2 is in GPU1's slot now - maybe the HDMI port on current GPU1 is a little janky.. who knows.

Thanks for the guide Zarathustra[H]! I was wondering why pc and game mode looked so different. I'll be sure to fiddle with the sharpness setting to improve the visuals :)

I would also like to add that I noticed there is a display scaling option hidden in the menus that may come in handy for some people. especially those with graphics cards only rated for 1080p as you may have scaling problems. For some reason my computer was scaling down the graphics with my AMD card and subsequently the TV was scaling it back up. Disabling both makes the picture a whole lot cleaner.

I'm also going to try setting a custom monitor profile and see if I can get it to accept a 120hz signal.

I own the 55" JU7100. I also noticed when I send a 10-bit signal through my Pioneer vsx 1021-k receiver the TV receives only an 8-bit signal. However if I directly connect it I get proper 10-bit. I'm hoping its not the receiver's fault as it is supposedly rated for Deep Color and I plan on buying better HDMI cables in the future.

Thank you for the guide and I hope my advice helps someone out there too.

Been lurking for a little while, but I registered, just to offer my heartfelt thank you to the thread starter Zarathustra and everyone else who contributed. I have been waiting for the technology to mature, been wanting to have a big 4k monitor for my PC. I am not a gamer but my workstyle is to have tons of windows open and hop around. Even though I saw that some of the Samsung's did Chroma 4:4:4 and that the nvidia gtx950 could drive it, I wanted to hear from people who did it. I am pretty sure I would never have had the patience and where-with-all to figure out how to turn on UHD mode on my samsung (or even that I needed to) and a few other things that are at the top of the thread. So yesterday I ran out with my PC, got the card installed, stopped by the TV store and picked up a 48JU7500 and with in 90 minutes got everything to the point where it almost worked! Turns out I needed an upgrade to my HDMI cable, but the shops were now closed. Grabbed it first thing this morning and the best pc monitor ever had is a Samsung TV. Thank you!
