Enabling IPMI using static addressing methods.

Some troubleshooting led to:
(1) Made sure no one else has the IPMI ip.
(2) Hosts themselves can communicate with each other and outside world through the regular eth0 interface.

But since IPMI is a virtual interface, it just needs the eth0 to be connected to be able to talk.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to ping or http into the IPMI ip.

Some of them are working and some not.

How shall I go on about bringing them up?

Thanks a lot.

What device has this IPMI port exactly? (Make/model). There are different implementations of IPMI depending on the vendor.

Depending on the IPMI, it could be bound to a specific interface or share one. I had to change the settings on my Tyan boards to get it to work.

IPMI is pretty trivial to get working so it's going to be one of the obvious 'duh' moments when you find it.

Double check there is no typo in the static address settings.

A server OS "eth0" doesn't necessarily mean physical NIC port one is what is plugged in. Since you describe a virtual interface for your IPMI it doesn't sound like you are dealing with a dedicated IPMI port. Have you confirmed the physical port is connected and is Port 1? Do your IPMI settings have a shared LAN+failover type of setting? If yes, don't use that while trouble shooting. Just use 'shared'.

Any VLAN's or firewalls blocking?

Is your IPMI static address on the same subnet as the eth0 IP of your server? Without VLAN's it will need to be... unless your broadcast traffic or route tables can connect your administrative workstation to that IPMI's IP.
