Fallout 4

This might be the thing I'm looking forward to the most. Well that and the weapon customization. I really took notice of all the crafting stuff during the reveal, it seemed great. I love the idea of using formally worthless loot for something beyond getting a bottle cap or two.

Between the crafting, settlements and nearly endless perk trees it's looking good.
Too bad the map is pitifully small. I hope they filled it to the brim with content.

Here's a bunch of pics and info from the streamer.
Possible spoilers.

Pitifully small compared to what though? Density factors heavily. They stated 4x the size of FO3, and like Skyrim in terms of distance across, but much more densely packed.

No matter what I think its a safe bet that it'll require hundreds of hours to see everything.

“I’ve played the game probably 400 hours, and I’m still finding stuff that I haven’t seen yet,” lead producer Jeff Gardiner said during an E3 2015 roundtable reported by gamesradar.

The streamer ran from the top-left corner to the bottom-right shoreline in 11 minutes. There's absolutely no way it's the same size as Skyrim. Also about 1/4 of the map is ocean water.
Quick estimation... Skyrim is maybe 4 times larger? How long does it take to run from Solitude to Riften?

I've yet to play a game where I've found crafting that isn't horribly boring. Settlements mechanic is odd addition i don't see the appeal, i would just prefer a stronger RPG with more exploration.

Exploration is really the only thing bethesda has been good at in their games but from what it sounds like the map is even smaller then past games. Maybe the map opens up more later or something.

Also you still can't kill kids .

Also you still can't kill kids .

Plenty of things you can't do in video games that otherwise would incur the wrath of SJW or others, some of them I can't blame them for, but FO2 had an issue with kids where the quick solution for UK's version of the game (the censorship had issue with the ability to kill kids in FO2) was to remove all kid NPCs from the game.

This broke 1 quest (one of the quests involves speaking to a kid) and in another town you have ghost barkers.

11 min corner to corner does seem awfully small...especially when that's on foot.

Are kids confirmed? Haven't actually seen any.

In terms of content, you are on foot -- No horses. So they can fill the map with the same amount of landmarks as Skyrim (or possibly more) and it will work fine on-foot. They will just be more densely packed.

I doubt the map will be any smaller than FO3 or New Vegas. I don't think you can compare square feet to Skyrim because Fallout will be more dense. We'll see how small it feels next week.

I actually liked the world and map far better in Fallout 3 than in New Vegas. The fact that 4 is so much larger than 3 speaks well to the amount of content in the game.

Alright I checked some mod sites, the actual local grid sizes are:

Fallout 3: 51 x 51
Skyrim: 119 x 94
Fallout 4: 84 x 84

I googled the 51x51 grid and found someone else echoing the same result:

Here's the correct scale:

* This assumes Fallout 4 uses the same grid size!
It should be noted all of Bethesda's past games (since Morrowind?) have used the same size localization grid. This also assumes the Fallout 4 map uses the same 3x3 grid system as Fallout 3... A lot of assumptions.

Welp, just bought the season pass from gmg.

Not that the November code is hard to find by any means but it's this:

SAVE20-NOVEMB-GAMING

Even if all the millions of complaints online about this game are true, I know I'll love it and play the sheeeeiiiit out of it.

FO3 and NV had plenty of shortcomings but it didn't stop me from playing through each + all dlc's twice!

I just started NEW VEGAS. By the time I finish it this Fallout 4 will be in the bargain bin.

gmg tends to have a 20% off voucher or so that works on it (at least it did a week ago).

GMG is off limits for me, keeps giving me a message saying I am forbidden to access the website.

Guess no discount for me

Parental block perhaps? Maybe your IT dept at work set up your gaming rig? lol

Nope, I am using my home computer and so no IT dept :p.

Unless I royally screwed up, I can however somehow access GMG's zendesk webpage, but not GMG's website proper.

Perculiarly enough, when I entered greenmangaming, on the google's suggestion feature, the first entry regarding GMG in my language is black market shop lol.

EDIT: Fun part, Steam is now available in my own currency, but...

GTA V and FO4 are both US$59.99, so they should cost the same in Taiwanese Dollars.

Turns out FO4 is about 6% cheaper than GTA V in TWD... (don't ask...)

Hm, maybe you could use Hola so you can VPN from the US and use it that way? I know I've done that from here to VPN from China to get certain deals.

Do we know anything about when, if at all, preload will be available? I'm going out of town for work Monday and will be DEVASTATED if I can't preload this on my gaming laptop beforehand.

Their last major releases all pre-loaded the weekend before launch. I'd be surprised if you couldn't pre-load on Sunday.

The quality of the Fallout 4 PC visuals has been a hot topic this week and today Bethesda posted an update which discusses the graphics tech behind the game

The development team’s first task was to enhance the Creation Engine after Skyrim by adding “a physically based deferred renderer” which allows for more dynamic lights which makes the objects look more real in the world...they have also been working with NVIDIA on techniques for weather and time of day...

To sum up, they’ve added the following to the Creation Engine for Fallout 4:
◾Tiled Deferred Lighting
◾Temporal Anti-Aliasing
◾Screen Space Reflections
◾Bokeh Depth of Field
◾Screen Space Ambient Occlusion
◾Height Fog
◾Motion Blur
◾Filmic Tonemapping
◾Custom Skin and Hair Shading
◾Dynamic Dismemberment using Hardware Tessellation
◾Volumetric Lighting
◾Gamma Correct Physically Based Shading

I wish that article actually explained half of these lol. Googling many of these terms still leaves me scratching my head :\

I'll translate it for you: It won't be Witcher 3 but things are going to look real nice. (As good as this engine can do anyways)

I still wish they would move on from this engine but I digress.

While not all, many/most high profile releases tend to unlock at midnight Eastern. For me that's 10PM, so it usually gives me a few minutes to configure my settings and get things set-up before bed.

To be honest I thought a lot of things in TW3 looked weird as hell, the foliage especially. I was more impressed by FC4 and MLL.

Not to mention I was bored as hell with TW3 in about 20 hours lol.

I agree. Though, I think I understand why they're still using Gamebryo after all these years. Not only do they understand the engine really well but it's really the only viable engine for what they want to do. The only other option they would have is to either make their own or work with whoever's handling game engines at id to develop something.

If this game looks as good as FC4 maxed out I'll be pretty happy.

I understand what you're saying but as long as it takes them to get their damned games out anyways they may as well move on and move forward.

Fallout 3 was released in 2008
Skyrim was released in 2011
I created this thread in 2013 (and was eager as hell for FO4 way before then)
Fallout 4 ------------ 2015

Yeah they definitely could have made a new engine over the course of those years. If they follow the same trend we'll have to wait until 2022 for Fallout 5. LOL

To create that volumetric light spilling across the scene (sometimes called “god rays”) we worked with our friends at NVIDIA, who’ve we worked with dating back to Morrowind’s cutting-edge water. The technique used here runs on the GPU and leverages hardware tessellation.

The bolded part worries me a bit. I think we all know what happens with tessellation in games that NVIDIA touches.

I hope I'm wrong.

Black Flag used Nvidia's god ray tech, how did that work out? It's a genuine question, I have no idea.

In Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, NVIDIA has leveraged DirectX 11 to enhance the ‘High’ God Rays option with tessellated, polygonal light shafts, which use less memory, and are faster to render, improving frame rates. This innovative solution greatly reduces aliasing on visible rays, too, further increasing image quality.
