Goodbye Catalyst Control Center – Hello Radeon Software Crimson Edition!

I hate the name, but those pics look great. Fingers crossed this is real.

Wow, game specific overclock is a huge feature.

And the software looks nice. It's obvious they took a few ideas from GFE but it looks nicer in my opinion.

Looks very nice not to sure about the GUI but it does not look too bad.

It is nice they can shorten the load time but I'm wondering how much of this is tied to which Windows version ...

its a .net program, so i doubt it has anything to do with the specific OS version.

Yup, only issues I've had with AMD drivers were due to .net and CCC not playing ball. Resolved them for good a year or two back though.

I prefer the old 2012 and before CCC style but glad to see this refreshed. Especially some of the new settings per game, will be keen to give it a blat when I return to my home country. Miss the shit out of my rig!

wonder if these will release as beta drivers, or with wqhl certs.

I will welcome the change, hey maybe they add voltage control back to their gpus :-D, instead of having to use a third party app.

never going to happen.

They would be financially liable for people blowing up their shit, and burning down their house.

Looks really nice.

I hope it works as advertised.

Maybe time to rethink buying AMD hardware.

Are you referring to the CCC or the new Radeon Software? CCC was in .net, but the new software is written in QT apparently.

Looks great. I always hated CCC. Hopefully it's truly an overhaul instead of just a fancy skin.
Hopefully forcing vsync in Direct3D will finally work ;)

I could never understand how such a simple .NET program ran so badly. I always assumed ATI had outsourced it to the cheaper off-shore outsourcing contractor and the whole thing was written to maximize the amount of billable time.

I look forward to having my drivers updating my twitter and FB feeds with "OMG Just installed new drivers check it out here shr.url/crap" because that's what I want my video drivers to do...

old CCC...

i doubt QT would have any OS effects either...

Not so sure. When I do an overclock, I just set it and forget it. The power management part of the driver handles the different clock speeds at different system load levels, so I don't have to worry about the overclock putting additional load when idle.

Also, using different overclocks because of slightly different max stable clocks in each game is a lot of time and effort for no noticeable gain. I've never seen "that one unstable game" make me drop an overclock more than 25-50 MHz, and that's peanuts in these days 1000+ clocks.

Also, that name is a big fail. Crimson Edition? Every time the drivers crash, people will extol "it's that time of the month." :D

The new layout doesn't look good to me. Too many horizontal blocks everywhere and several places where two side by side sections (like display1 and 2) would be better they instead went with blocks stacked on top of each other.

To me it looks like this control panel might be best when set to a fairly small window.

I just hope Nvidia tries to one-up them and upgrades their shitty control panel.

"Most importantly, AMD is promising that a new major version of the software will be released every year, with minor versions arriving every month. Each new major version will have a different, colour-themed name. The software is due to roll out later this year."

Didn't they promise more responsive fixes to game issues a year or two back and came out with hot patch downloads for specific game profiles?

With this much hype and how they failed the first time I will sit back with caution and watch.

A: If you have to cut someone's segment that much to make it intelligible, then maybe Mr. Koduri, as good and smart as he is, wasn't the one to choose for a PR/marketing piece.
B: Who cares. The software may be amazing, but if the underlying driver bites, it just doesn't matter. Something about lipstick on pig.
C: So, a facelift?

Looks are always secondary to functionality.

If it looks good and performs crappily, then it doesn't matter. (Case in point: Batman, or those old sound card control center programs that looked like mini stereo decks designed by some high school blinger)

so there are going to be monthly driver releases as well or just updates to the new Radeon interface?...didn't they move away from monthly releases awhile back because it was too much work for not enough performance results?

nope, they've always had a driver a month (with a few exceptions)

They stopped doing WHQL every month.

Could care less about the name change, the only things that matters to me is that it works

How about they make the drivers work before putting yet another coat of paint on them to "make it pretty"

So now on top of shitty drivers for my Xfire 290s, I'll have to wade through some new complicated interface that probably has lots of "tiles".

Maybe you have a shitty system messing with your drivers or you incapable of properly installing drivers.

Oh, don't be THAT guy. Issues with AMD drivers have been common knowledge for some time now. I myself stopped using team-red products when their launch 4850 drivers somehow nuked my mbr while installing them. Until this year, CF drivers had massive microstutter issues. They are always WAY late to the table with new game drivers. And CCC is a horrendous piece of software.
These are absolutes, and are not relative to Nvidia, note, whose drivers are FAR from perfect, but let's not pretend like AMD's graphics drivers aren't plain bad.

Nice. Can't wait to have a play with these. There where rumors about 6 months ago about a complete overhaul of CCC. This looks like it will be it.

Considering I've never had any issues to speak of with AMD drivers (at least none bad enough to remember now [on single GPU's that is, since the 3D Rage Pro through my current 7970]), I'm looking forward to this.

However, with all the trouble people seem to be having with their drivers, I think the resources would be better allocated to driver development.

A pig is still a pig after you put lipstick on it.

CCC had too much bloat...hopefully this new version will be lighter on resources...they also should have gone a step further and rebranded themselves back to ATI...they have been going downhill since getting rid of the ATI name...let AMD stand for their CPU's alone

"Periodic driver updates—AMD hopes to push about six WHQL-certified drivers per year going forward, not tied to an email registration, though it promises more details in coming weeks...If your graphics card can handle most games without breaking a sweat, but needs a little extra oomph to hit that sweet, sweet 60 frames per second on a particularly beefy title, you can now configure the game’s profile to kick in overclocking on that title alone, rather than universally...

Are you actually blaming 4850 drivers for your motherboard dying? The only drivers I've ever heard of that killed components was... Nvidia's. Their 196.75 drivers turned off the cooling fan and actually cooked some people's cards.

Until this year, CF drivers had massive microstutter issues. They are always WAY late to the table with new game drivers. And CCC is a horrendous piece of software.
Both sides have issues with multi-card setups. I always run single cards simply to avoid CrossFire/SLI related issues. And the CCC has never caused me any problems.

Again, I've been running AMD cards for years and haven't noticed any major issues. Nvidia single card drivers aren't any better or any worse than AMD's. Overall, I'd say they're on par with each other.

mbr=master boot record of my hdd. It was, eventually, a known issue at the time.

Anecdotal evidence is not terribly useful. I mean, I'm honestly glad that you never had any issues (I hadn't until my 4850 debacle). And i'm not even saying that the vast majority of AMD users do have those issues, but many do, and many continue to, and AMD continues to lag behind on driver releases. Which, IMHO, is inexcusable for a GPU company.

Looks good! I also like the current CCC, so this is a nice surprise.

Would really like an option for straight CLI also.
