630 million? That's a lot of packages. Let's not forget UPS has a bad track record with shipping estimates. The company missed estimates last year and the year before and had a hell of a time just getting packages delivered. Maybe the third time is a charm?

“The growth of online shopping and returns continues to redefine the holiday peak season at UPS,” said chief commercial officer Alan Gershenhorn during an investor conference call on quarterly financial results. For the period from Thanksgiving through December, UPS expects to handle more than 630 million packages.

I believe it. "Cyber Monday" keeps getting bigger and bigger and more and more are doing online shopping. Amazon ships cheapest, so UPS might be that vendor.

I think Amazon, Ebay and others have revitalized these shipping carriers the past decade or so. I know I get several packages a week from them. From little stuff to some huge stuff.

And how many of those packages will be delivered on time?

not many! damn UPS today release day delivery guaranteed for my Xbox elite controller and movie Pixels and nope not here rescheduled for tomorrow.

makes benefits of Prime kind of useless.

And even more useless when Amazon mails them instead since the post office doesn't deliver in this area (10 mile round trip to pick them up at the post office). I'd rather deal with UPS occasionally being a day late (one time I got a package two weeks late, that was the post office though). Usually a package is late because of Amazon screw up (sending it ground instead of blue-label e.g.). On a bright note FedEx has finally started Saturday delivery here (maybe only for the xmas season though).

The richest person in the history of the universe will be the person that invents a working, reliable Transporter System (like in Star Trek).

That person will almost instantly inherit the wealth of every shipping entity in existence. Nearly overnight.

But, much like the 100mpg Carburetor of folklore, it will never be allowed to happen. One whiff of it's existence, and it will be another Silkwood all over again.

Outside of nature getting in the way, nearly all. Unless you live in aforementioned BFE residences, then it may be a bit spotty- but for most urban and suburban recipients, no real issues.

and UPS pilots are planning to strike if things don't go their way, so we'll see about ON TIME packages.

That's a heck of a lot of fruitcakes and cheap polyester ties being shipped around!

My first thought was that the title ought to be...

"UPS Expects To Lose 630M Packages This Holiday Season"

I've had such poor luck with UPS in my area. Knowing they are delivering something means I might as well just file a claim right after I order it.

FedEx around here is stellar, and its funny how in other areas, its the exact reverse. I blame it on the local driver and not the company though. A driver who gives a shit makes all the difference.

I will say I often have UPS deliver early if it gets to the office quickly, and watch them change the date to a day or two earlier than estimated. I have not seen fedex do this, I have many times seen the status "package holding: not due for delivery" for two days when it is in the office down the street. Fedex you pay for 5 day, it will take 5 days even if it is across the county.

A driver who gives a shit makes all the difference.

Could be the driver, could be the local delivery (package) center, could be both...

While it's not your responsibility, calling in and complaining while also filing claims is the best way to prod them into improving service.
