Hey everyone, I'm hoping this is a quick answer but I have a GTX 770 4GB that I'm looking to put into a HTPC. Just curious if it will output 4K with no issues or do I need a card with HDMI 2.0? I read something about HDMI allowing 60 Hz?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the info. So it seems like the only way is over display port. Does anyone know of a TV that has a displayport connection or is that only monitors?

Pretty sure it is only monitors no tv yet. You would have to buy display port to HDMI.

As of a couple of months ago, a display port to HDMI 18Gbps (HDMI 2.0) adapter did not yet exist, but there was a company making one. I believe it was supposed to be out this fall, but I don't really care anymore since I got a GTX 960 on my HTPC :p

I think that Nvidia made a driver tweak on the Kepler cards to do 4k60 over hdmi 1.4, but there were some problems in that you get 4:2:0 Chroma and not 4:4:4, basically to stay within the bandwidth of hdmi 1.4

What EXACTLY do you want it for? And if you're gaming, what games did you want to play, and at what settings?

Movies? You won't notice the difference between 30Hz and 60Hz.

Games? You'll notice the difference between 30Hz and 60Hz, but the video card isn't really capable of playing games at 4k resolution. Not at least without making you turn down a ton of settings.

Web browsing is possible at 30Hz.

So why the long story abut 4k 60 Hz? You don't really have the equipment to make gaming at 4k possible, like a R9 290x, or a GTX 780 Ti. And anything FASTER from Nvidia has HDMI 2.0.

highyellow1, can you please answer my post and tell us EXACTLY what you want to do with this video card, and why 60Hz is highly important to you?

I was previously using I think a 760 or 770, and I would NOT recommend it for 4k. Performance was fine, but 4k@60hz using 4:2:0 caused some horrendous flickering in Win10. If you do 4k@30hz, some content gets a lot of tearing, and otherwise sucks. 1080p@60hz is fine on a 4k screen, but I mean why get 4k then?

Since I've yet to find the fabled DP -> HDMI 2.0 active adapter, I'm using the evga 960 2GB half-depth card with a low-profile pcie connector so I can actually close my case.

tl;dr - you want a card with HDMI 2.0, period. GTX 960 is the lowest card that is still HTPC friendly and HDMI 2.0.

There are some 4K DP TV's. You can search for them here:

So far there are 4.

I've heard some bad reviews about the Philips TVs listed there. Screen issues that make people return them. Personally do not own one - I have a Samsung JS9500.

From what I gather this works

[4K Ultra HD Version] 6ft aLLreLi 4Kx2K Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable | Thunderbolt to HDMI | Mini DP to HDMI | 24K Gold Plated Connectors | Video+Audio | PC and Apple MAC, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air

I can second this horrendous flickering @4k. It nearly makes just general navigation within windows HORRIBLE and unusable! I thought there was something wrong with the card at first until I looked this up.

Obviously it depends on the games being played. The Witcher 3, GTA5, etc. aren't going to be viable at 4k but any game that's not a "system killer" will be fine (LoL, WoW, Smite, BF4 at medium-ish settings, etc).

We may be able to game at 4K using our computers but watching 4K movies via our computer is a different story as it has to have HDCP 2.2 on the HDMI 2.0 to do so.. dose Nvidia have a work around?
