Doom 4 E3 reveal.

Watching the gameplay video, the weapons didn't seem as satisfying. The plasma rifle from Doom 3 was my favorite. Everything about it was awesome. The way it looks, the sound it makes when you shoot it, the sound it makes when you reload. The guns in 4 don't seem that great. I hope they improve that or is better once I play it.

Looks great, just hope the environments a lighting are not super immobile like other idtech5 games. That always broke my immersion when shooting a can with a rocket only to find it stuck to the ground with a force only known to god.

That's the strong nuclear force at work. :p

Bethesda is now getting DOOM testing underway with news that invites are heading out to a few lucky testers...the invites are part of the Wofenstein: The New Order pre-order deal from last year and the test is taking place to “stress test the game’s dedicated server infrastructure in a real-world consumer environment.”

Test 1 begins 10/23 at 12:01am ET and concludes 10/25 at 11:59pm ET. Stay tuned for information on subsequent tests

If only I bought Wolfenstein a few weeks earlier. :(

Oh well, I'm pretending it doesn't exist until it ships. :D

Got my invite!!! I'm not into mp side of games like I used to be, but I'll make an exception here. :D

I got an invite, they must be giving these things out to everyone because I never get into these things. I'll definitely play it, though.

There are confidentiality terms associated with this alpha, the e-mail invite says that sharing or posting related content can get your disqualified from this test and future tests.

Just an FYI for those participating.

how they gonna know?:D:D:D

Thanks djoye! I was about to hit the "post reply" and saw your post and went back to actually READ the e-mail. Yeah, I'm not getting banned from the Beta!

I got invited. I hope other quake/90's players will play. I'll find out so if its truly old school or if it'll be full of young folk.

Well, I think the final release will be full of older players. Not sure on the test version. I would hope there are plenty, in order to give them proper feedback.

I almost regret not pre-ordering Wolfenstein, as bad of a Wolf game it was. Trying not to get pumped. I don't want to spend money on 4 year old gpu tech.

Gonna keep myself busy with legacy of the void beta and fpvods of pros.

Wolfenstein TNO is one of the best games I've played in years, and actually looked borderline amazing most of the time (minus the odd texture here or there.) It made a great Wolf game IMO.

Doom is running on Tech 6 too which isn't totally the same engine. (I doubt it has as many advancements as the previous ones that had Carmack working on them, but it should have some improvements. (hard to tell from the videos what exactly they've changed, but it looks good if you ask me...)

Still not showed up in my Steam library, I guess they're going to add the game when the servers go online at 12AM EST.

I pre installed it. Go to all games and install main menu. Though the .exe is missing until later.

Finally showed up, didn't even have to restart. Currently downloading it.

Supposed to do away with the Rage textures....we shall see.

Got my email.... downloading now!!!! CANT FRICKIN WAIT........! DOOM IS GONNA ROCK!

I'm still of the opinion that that was mostly down to art direction. The textures were absolutely gorgeous in most areas. Then in some places they look like they were pulled from 1993 somewhere. Maybe they were running up against storage limits as when RAGE came out, 25-30GB was huge. Wolfenstein had less of the bad textures, and came in just under 50GB, so it seems like they could push more using brute force at this point.

It was 90% the engine. The engine had megatextures, with it's sole purpose being to feed textures through quick to get a steady 60 fps (back in 2011 this was more important to Carmack I guess?). The textures looked alright standing still or at decent length, but nine times out of ten up close, pretty much quake 2 if that, maybe quake 3. The framerate worked, but the tech would've been much easier to digest if it was 2001-2004 timeframe.

Its actually fantastic. Feels like the doom 3 multiplayer. On steroids.

I think it looks great. Just can't play it yet....

P.S. There are more than 3 people that are looking forward to it

It was a joke because I don't see much about it, but I'm definitely looking forward to it if MP is more like Quake 5.

I can say I haven't enjoyed multiplayer since Q3A... and I enjoy this, a lot.

Well I'm enjoying the new UT Alpha, have been since last year....but they still seem to omit something nowadays with gaming. Just can't recreate the past 100%.

Just can't recreate the past 100%.

Yeah, true. There are a ton of factors that go into that. The main one for me is where I was in my life when certain games came out. For example when Q3A came out, I lived in a house with my brother and a couple of friends. We had pretty much the ultimate LAN setup in one room with a wet-bar outside that, and a dojo next to that. We'd spend hours in Q3A, then take a drink break, maybe hit each other with things, then go back in and play some more Q3A. I don't know what aligned in the universe right then, but we all worked from home with very flexible hours, no other pressing obligations, and plenty of income.

I have a wife and kids now, rarely see those friends anymore. Still good friends, but everyone is all over the place, different schedules, etc. There's just no possible way it would ever have the same feel as playing Q3A then.

Still though, I get pleasantly surprised every so often even now, and there hasn't been an id release yet that I didn't enjoy. So, still quite excited for the new Doom. Unless they pulled off a failure of Daikatana proportions, they really can't disappoint me. If the feel of any of their previous games is present, they're doing alright. I also can't wait to see the new Wolfenstein that is supposedly being worked on. It's Machine Games, but they're right up there with id in my view. id may not be the exact same company they once were, but then no other company from that time period really is either. Things evolve, much like our play experiences. With all that evolution though, it's still nice to play some old-style games. This looks like it will fill that role nicely.

I don't know man, part of it is the developers actually playing the games they make. I really notice that of late and Triple A is more the criminal in that regard. You see a lot of games come out for console and PC that might have gone through bug testing but nobody on the development teams actually seemed to play their own game. Not you know walking through some area or checking cutscenes, but sitting down and playing the game they made from beginning to end. Being able to go "I made this game and I had fun beginning to end.". I think in a way Valve was a darling for that for a while. Gabe both talking and showing how much he loved Dota and and how when he felt like fucking off he'd play some Dota 2 at the office.

For instance, Dying Light. It's not a bad game, but I refuse to believe the developers actually played through the whole game beginning to end and thought "Oh yeah this is perfect there is literally nothing we couldn't have done better", no that game was missing tons of very basic things that could have made it an amazing title. Not to mention the ending was a total joke.

I think also the criminals(I know I cant think of a better word) are the writers, who commonly admit they write the story and dialog and tweak whatever is requested. They don't play through the game or at least watch someone play it all the way through.

I know everybody is not on the same page for this one, but feel having played it, just to give an example, the devs played Wolfenstein, the latest one. It may not be for everybody or have exactly the same feel as the original but it felt solid 95% of the way through. It felt good and climactic. My only complaint was one scene where you have to Jump onto a helicopter but you can reach if you have two guns. You just supposed to magically know that somehow.

I think if you pay attention you can tell when Devs actually care about the game they're making.

Maybe not as much these days, but I knew some developers that because they actually played their own games too much, the games became ridiculously hard to play for anyone else (initially) because they kept tweaking the games to suit their time with them, and their own changing views of the game logic over time. :D This of course is only one aspect of what you're saying, and I agree with everything else. I used to have my friend play through one of the games he worked on, because it was entertaining to see someone actually able to play the unplayable mess that it was. :D Things in the game made sense to him, that made zero sense to me, and I never would have thought of. Also, it was a bad game anyway.

I agree though, I don't think a lot of devs do play their games these days. They just send the latest build/branch down to the testers, and let them do it.

I used to go hang out at the office where the same friend worked (on a game that was actually good... :D ) but instead of playing their own game, they mostly played Heretic.
