Can The Woman Behind Halo 5 Save The Xbox?

Save the Xbox? I didn't know the Xbox needed "saving."

Ross’s colleagues saw her decision to take on this project as a bad move for a young person on the rise—there was a feeling at Microsoft that Halo had run its course. “People felt like, Let’s get another Halo or two out, and it’s the end of the franchise,” Ross says. “The thing I asked for was: If I take it over, I want to be George Lucas. I want to own everything, and I want to do things differently.”

Xbox found jesus? Or maybe found Cortana? Halo is fun but I usually just play the campaign and then shelve it.

Wanting to "Save Xbox" by becoming like the guy that did his best to kill Star Wars... not something I think would be a great metaphor.

Wait, since when does the XBox One need saving? Last time I checked, it was doing great and selling better than the XBox 360 was. Oh well, my XBox One is running great with the new preview of the OS although I do not use quite a bit of what the One can do anyways. :)

I like the new preview. It takes a bit to find things again, but it's nice.

I'm trying to get all I can out of the Xbox One. I have it connected to my OTA box for live TV, which works excellent (Nice Goodwill find with HDMI out, and the Xbox can control the channels, etc.). I watch movies with Media Player. Netflix/Hulu/NFL. Games are huge. This thing is always doing something. Very powerful machine that is a lot more than just a gaming machine. It's taken over duties as the HTPC...

If the Xbox needs saving, then the industry is really pushing the expectations, which happens.

I like the new preview as well. Much snappier and better layout. Getting to invite a friend to a party is back to on par with the 360 (why they made it so bad for xbone i dunno).

When Microsoft has basically said they cede the current gen to Sony, then yeah, it needs saving.

The xbox needs to be debloated, ESPECIALLY the new dashboard.
I read that first as "de-blo-a-ted".

Agreed. I still can't believe it takes so damned long to look at achievements. And why the hell does the friends app have so much useless information on the screen? I loved back on the Xbox 360 when all you had to do was press the Guide button and click 2 times, at most, to get what you want. All while not ripping you out of your gameplay session.

The franchise needs a revamp, but he universe has plenty to explore.

Maybe it's time to go beyond the MC, maybe a reboot in the Johnson/Spartan 1 generations with all the civil conflict that spawned the Spartan II programs. (I've read a few of the books)

AS far as 'saving the xbox one' I like mine, I didn't at first, but they have made consistently good improvements all around, I am excited to see what the 10 update will do to the system.

Well they seem to be accomplishing that goal well on their own.

They seem to be accomplishing getting rid of Halo on their own? That makes no sense at all considering they are not getting rid of it.

meh halo again, I'm rather bored with it after playing it on two other xbox consoles.

still undecided which console to buy, the only ones that may tip me towards an xboxone is sunset overdrive and maybe tombraider.

And now that Halo sucks, I haven't bothered to buy the past two or and Xbox one.

IMHO Halo sucked from day one. It had a shallow story and game play, nothing really original. For a console game original looked fairly decent though.

First split screen, then micro transactions.. what's next? Microsoft is killing the brand and Halo will be dead soon.

Halo has always been a game about half told stories. I defy you to understand exactly WTF is going on in the first 4 games in the series story-wise without having to read the novels, comics and wikis. They give you half a reason to go kick some ass during a cut scene and then shit just zips along until nothing about the story makes any sense and you're forced into a "fuck it, I guess I'm just here to kill the alien monsters" mindset.

Ironically the only game I've found with a thinner storyline what wasn't blatant about not having a story (i.e. every Id game) is Destiny.

After halo 4 and how terrible it was. Then Master Chief collection being terrible as well? Zero fucks are given for halo 5. Sometimes I hear about Frankie on neogaf and he is a complete tool with "give us another chance"

The only reason a lot of people buy an Xbox is because of Halo. So your idea is to get rid of that. Great plan.

Lol.

The only reason people buy the Xbox is to play a god awful game franchise?

I wouldn't play Halo if it were free, and I was so bored I had absolutely nothing else to do. :p

It's more of a sad statement on Xbox customers than anything else.

It's more of a sad statement on, PC, Apple, Google, Verizon, AT&T, NVidia, AMD, Intel, McDonalds, Burger King, Toyota, Chevy, Sears, Best Buy, Regal Theater and on and on and on customers than anything else.

Fixed that for you. :D

Like I said, care to explain that? This is not a winner take all football game and the One does not need to beat the Four to be successful. In fact, the One is quite successful already and the life of this gen is not even done yet. :)
Well here's more on the topic:

http://www.theverge.com/2015/1/26/7917559/microsoft-earnings-report-q2-2015

to quote the article:

"These price cuts have helped hit Xbox platform revenue though, with it decreasing 20 percent year-over-year. "

Yes, it's not winner takes all, but Sony is leading almost 2:1 in terms of sales, the head of Xbox division is saying it will likely never overtake them, and revenue (for the time being anyway) is falling. Yes they could turn that around, but with living room gaming PCs on the horizon, there's going to be more competition in a market that has less tolerance for additional players than it used to. I'm not declaring the Xbox dead or anything, I was just saying the comment someone else made about ceding to Sony is understandable.

What new dashboard? The Preview? Are you already using the preview?

No... just the amount of ADS and the Extra junk that is shoved in your face since it went to the Metro style with the 360.

This is supposed to be an entertainment device, not another ad serving machine.

I have Aurora as the dashboard on my 360 at home. It's PERFECT. List of games, list of apps end of story.

That was an article from clear back in January so, it is basically comparing the Christmas 2013 season to the Christmas 2014 season. What we have today is not directly comparable to that and when I started reading that article, I was wondering what they where saying about a preview OS when it is already out. :D

The problem is, from what I was seeing, the person I quoted seem to be saying that it was an all or nothing football game. In my opinion as well, Steam PC's, if that is what you are referring to, are no real threat especially given the cost and what is available on the consoles.

And it is not since we were talking about the XBox One. That said, I do not seem to have the issues you have with the 360, I just select games and bang, I am on my way. :D The thing I like is that I was able to get a bunch of digital games for my 360 on the cheap. :)

I don't even remember the Halo story at all. ODST, haven't a clue. I think I landed somewhere, killed things, then left...or something. I don't remember.

I do feel that these games futuristic games keep doing the same thing.

Crysis. Kill N.Koreans, now kill aliens.
Halo. Kill aliens, now kill green aliens.
Destiny. Kill aliens, now kill robot aliens.

Halo (5 or any number hence forth) and no split screen co-op = FAIL!

Really?

IMHO split screen anything makes a game unplayable. Hated GoldenEye for that reason. (well, that and because of having to use a stupid controller istead of Mouse and Keyboard)

Get another system for multiplayer or don't bother.
