I could be looking at this completely wrong, but this seems like a decent solution for increasing leg space and sleeping more comfortably on a flight. Safety concerns will likely prevent this kind of configuration from happening, though.

“In order to still more efficiently use the space in a passenger cabin of an aircraft, U.S. Pat. No. 4,066,277 proposes to position an elevated deck structure on a main deck floor in the passenger cabin of a wide-body aircraft for providing a mezzanine seating area in a substantially unused upper lobe of the aircraft fuselage.”

That something this idiotic can be pattented speaks volumes about the state of patent law in this country.

Further there's also the problem of prior art: http://c.fastcompany.net/multisite_...trade-infographic-7368885460-550b83c0a8-o.jpg

As someone who is getting on yet another plane tomorrow... this idea looks horrible. Just what I want, even less space. I'm going to be an angry person tomorrow. New company policy is they handle all booking and I get no say. So what did they do? Crammed 6'3" me into the back of the fucking plane with no option for seats I can actually sit in. I'm going to choke someone when I get back.

Doesn't seem so bad from the 2nd pic that's it's compartmentalized so you don't smell the ass above you and the ability to recline almost 180 degree without the person behind throwing a fit. Actualky looks better than the traditional/current arrangement.

Yeah and thanks to the TPP patents apply world wide now, well within the countries part of it. Though TBH I always thought they did already.

I want to patent the idea of sitting at an emergency exit to get more leg room. That way only I will be able to do it. :p I never really found plane leg room THAT bad though, for the few times I got a chance to fly, but think I was more amazed at the view than worrying about comfort. I probably would not want to be sitting more than 2-3 hours in a plane though.

What I see in the second picture: those people who kick you in the kidneys for the entire flight when they sit behind you will now be able to kick you in the head.

Yet if the plane that uses this sell tickets for 30% less, people will vote with their wallets and this will become the norm.

Planes are shitty because people are cheap.

Tickets will be the same price.

Increasing the density of the sardine has never decreased consumer prices... Only airline profit margins

Just one more reason not to fly, and I'm only 6'. Couldn't imaging trying to squeeze into a seat if I was any taller.
I don't think they could pay me enough to take a job that required me to regularly get on a plane.

If it's a separate compartment it wouldn't be that bad. If you fly on larger planes like the 777, you likely already have people up above you without even knowing (the pilot and crew rest areas in some models are up in the crown of the fuselage above the overhead bins).

Quick fall and break a leg, sue them! Also great for those who suffer claustrophobia.

Not a new idea. Trains had things called roomettes with a full bed, toilet and sink in that seating arrangement fifty years ago. More astonishing that the seating arrangement was patentable.

The fifth element movie had the best seating concept, even without the induced sleep.

Also I find it humorous how many average sized people seem completely incapable of sitting properly in a seat. I've never seen an airplane seat that wouldn't easily accommodate someone 6'4". It's not just planes though. I always laugh when I see guys who are 6'0" and think they need their car seat all the way back.

I'm sure #12 doesn't appreciate having his nose stuffed in #20's ass.

It'll never fly, how would the obese wedge themselves into into the passengers space on each side?

Both Airbus and Boeing file absurd patents from time to time on aerospace travelling. In this case, Airbus isn't going to be implementing. They both have cattle car-type patents that wouldn't fly either. Take your Valium, people.

I actually thought that would be an awesome idea, but if you look at the size they use in the movie, it'd take up more space.

------------

There's always the random ideas that are tossed around.

^ that lower image is not too different from the patent image shown in the OP.
