Windows 10 is always on

I have a clean install of Windows 10.

I am sure I missed something. The system is always on. I put it into sleep or shutdown and it is always on when I come back. It does shutdown and sleep when I do it, but come morning its back on.

I rarely use this machine anymore so having it sleep is important to me.

How can I make sure it is only active when I want it to be.

An easy way is to use Hibernate instead of Sleep. Nothing aside from you pressing the power button will bring it back on at that point.

In terms of fixing sleep, do you have wake timers enabled? You could try disabling that.

I have the same problem. If I shut it down all the way or put it in sleep mode it turns back on in seconds. I haven't looked into it yet.

I don't know how to hibernate. I only have sleep, restart, off.

I tried disabling wake timers. I'm sure I screwed it up, any tips?

Fire up an Admin cmd prompt, run this:
powercfg -lastwake

That will tell you what device last woke your PC. More often than not, it will be the NIC. Go into device manager, find the device, open the power management tab, and either uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer", or, if it's a NIC, you can check the "Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer" and see what that does.

You can also check for newer drivers for whatever device it is as well. Sometimes the sleep stuff is bugged (I'm looking at you, Intel and your shitty 7260AC drivers) and newer drivers will help.

I noticed an issue similar to this on my P67 board, but it also affected Windows 8.1. I would shut down Windows and in a few moments it would power back on almost like I just restarted it. I never figured out what caused it.

I noticed when I have a game controller plugged in my win 10 box won't go to sleep. Happens with 360 controller and ps4 controller.

do you have TeamViewer installed?
some build in version 10 causes erratic wakeups.
I just disabled the TeamViewer service to fix it.

Though the issue may be fixed if a newer build has been released.

I do have one connected. I'll disconnect it.

This. game controllers are notorious for causing pcs not to sleep. Had the same problem in windows 7 and have to disconnect it for pc to sleep successfully.

I have an old PC running Windows 7 for Media Center with an USB MCE remote receiver (using built-in driver). Only the Homerun Prime HD application is installed. Nothing under powerwake, but it wakes up occasionally even when it's not recording any shows. Defrag scheduler and update are disabled. Annoying.

ET must phone home I guess...
