Ladies and gentlemen, Volkswagen is proud to announce that, thanks to technology and software hacks, all TDI Clean Diesels come with 75% more murder.

The software that the company admitted using to get around government emissions limits allowed VWs to spew enough pollution to cause somewhere between 16 and 94 deaths over seven years, with the annual count increasing more recently as more of the diesels were on the road. The total cost has been well over $100 million.

More deaths caused by the actions of people.

Ban people!

If AP and their software could name the 9+ people who died from VW cheating, that would be impressive, but since it can't, GTFO.

HAHAHAHA.

So basically this is akin to the warnings on products about California finding that ingredients can lead to cancer (if you ingest 10k more than you normally would in a lifetime).

What a bunch of attention grabbing lies.

That a pretty tenuous chain of logic.

I'm not a member of the "Pollution is just a left-wing, hippie, communist conspiracy against eagles and freedom" community, but this is a pretty huge pile of what-ifs and maybes.

Yes, compared to the confirmed deaths what were directly caused by GM's ignition switch. But VW gets a fine 18 times larger.

The V8's and the ancient truck diesels count for nothing I guess :D

Euros are driving with 1000cc turbos, US folks 5700cc freely aspirated. Only 40mpg difference lol. Pretty hypocrite to talk about emissions at that point.

What about motorcycles?

Absolutely ZERO emission devices, they get to ride in the car pool lane and spew massive emissions over cars, but nobody bitches about them...

Not saying I'm against bikes, just making a point.

This is all hype and bullshit...

"experts calculated..."

No reference to said results. Journalist just getting clicks from speculations provided by someone trying to get clicks since this is currently 'big news'.

And I don't care for indirect analysis like this. If a butterfly flaps its wings, it can cause a tsunami across the world. Well then we should eliminate all butterflies in that logic. lol

Uhh... they've had emissions regulations for decades(lack of inspection and people just modifying exhausts without care/worry being a separate issue)

You guys are missing the point. This article has been placed into the media stream to help prime the way for additional lawsuits and grievances.

The increased emissions will only speed up the death of suicidal people running the cars in a closed garage.

Smells like bullshit. Some of the ecofreaks like to spout bullshit with out evidence or proof.

They are selectively targeted for sacrifice by car drivers, to pay for the deaths caused by their pollution.

That'd be interesting...

Pollution/Death ratio as part of a vehicle spec sheet.

They might as well have said that not unlike second hand smoke kill 400k people a year, VW second hand diesel killed 9 people per year. Do you see how stupid this stuff becomes.

Meaningless nonsense. There is Zero way to quantify that. It's probably a government mandated spec.

Don't apply the same reasoning to coal fired power plants or your head might explode. lol

Statements like this are why the mainstream can't take serious issues like global warming and declining fresh water resources seriously. For all the scientific research and data available you have those whackos that get press and air time spouting outrageous nonsense.

If a single death can be empirically proven to have been the direct result of the increased emissions coming from VW diesels I will be extremely impressed. I just might have to eat my underwear.

lol denialism, argued from ignorance.

China might be calling you as an expert witness to defend smog and particulate polluters as NOT causing health problems and increasing death rates.

What a Dino load of shit. It's possible that this may be one of the dumbest things I've ever read since I learned how to read, like last year!

The air quality problems in China are an amalgamation of regulatory standards that are at least 50 years behind western nations in multiple industries. Their issues are deep and far reaching, much more than what the result of 2 million cars driving on international roads for 7 years would be.

I am not excusing want VAG did, I am just commenting on the absurdity of using calculated numbers like this to manufacture even more outrage in the public.

Okay lets get the facts clear here. First off GM didn't INTENTIONALLY design a faulty component. And it was only through a minor revision part change that it was discovered the return spring was not strong enough, which was later noted and fixed by an engineer. But this change was missed by upper management as a potential hazard in previous cars.

When ignition switch failures started to appear it wasn't an intentional overlook. But GM did become "an ostrich with it's head in the hole" situation after a while.

Just imagine if liberals had total control over this country. We would all be riding bicycles and eating toe food.

Wrong, the lead switch engineer designed a faulty switch. He designed the switch in 2002 and he knew that it would slip out it's run position. He secretly changed the spring force and the part in 2006, told no one on his team or in executive management, didn't change the part number, nor the revision. He then sent the secretly modified part to Delphi to manufacture it and they have all the documentation to back up their claims that DeGorgio (the lead switch engineer) authorized all changes. Thousands of documents. This guy should be in prison for what he did, but because the government owned a significant portion of GM stock at one time, they have dropped all charges against him and other GM executives.

Sounds like something Obama would come up with. Sounds good, but no substance or proof.

Toe food? You mean tofu? rite? amirite? please say imrite.

No, this is what I am talking about. :D
