If you search via their pc components/cpu it does't show up.

If you search i5-6500 it shows up as "in-stock" (At least for downers grove, il)

For those of us who want to get into skylake and don't want a 91w (i5-6600k) processor, this is nice.

Edit: This is also about $50 cheaper than standard i5-6600k pricing

Besides the unlocked multiplier and a higher tdp on the 6600k, is there really much difference between the 6500 and the 6600k?

People tend to overreact to the TDP of those chips, without take into consideration that the increased TDP over past generations are mostly due to iGPU. I would not pick ever anything lower than a K chip based in TDP specially if are planning to use a discrete GPU..

Main difference is the K chip is faster and less processing going on for likely faster over clocking.

Keeps telling me I don't have COOKIES enabled, in EVERY BROWSER I try.

WTF!

BCLK overclocking on the non-K skylake might be very interesting. It's not linked to PCIE/Sata anymore, only RAM.
i5 6400 is pretty cheap. It has a multiplier of 27. I've heard BCLK of 200 being possible so
27x150 bclk =4050 Mhz would be very nice

and the i5 6500 I believe has a multiplier of 32 so you'd only need 125 BCLK x 32 = 4Ghz

the default intel spec for BCLK is a max of 170mhz, but certain motherboards (high end Z170 boards) allow to override it even up to 400mhz like the Asus Z170 Deluxe yes BCLK in skylake is independent from DMI and PCI but only certain Z170 motherboards allow BCLK change in some non K chips (and I think maybe intel can update the microcode and block that if is possible), but I think then, why buy a super high end motherboard to be paired with a cheap chip?. would be great to see overclocking i3 with cheap mobos as I think those will be able to reach some nice numbers.

I see but I feel that you're a bit pessimistic. We could see something similar to the B75 vs Z77 chipset once more. Cheap motherboards allowing BCLK overclocking isn't too far fetched IMO

I see it on newegg.com. $219 for the 6500 and $259 for the 6600k....
6600k is worth the extra few $$.

Check out the extra processing abilities of the i5-6500 and if you need those than get that one. Speed is good but if you are after extra processing abilities of the i5-6500 then make sure you get the best CPU for your needs. Speed is good but if you are missing out on a processing ability that the i5-6500 has then you will not be happy.

If you need those then yes, but most will not.
I do find it interesting if the 6500 can be OC on those certain motherboards.

isn't about being pessimistic it happened before. specially memorable with the Pentium Anniversary blocked to certain motherboards by updated CPU microcode.. also happened with Z87, B87 and H87 or even newer H97 both had CPU multiplier unlocked at launch, then was just disabled. I hope certainly you are right and we can see some non K skylake overclocking through BCLK permanently, but again I don't think intel love the idea to see i3s and cheap i5s overclocking to over 4ghz easily as it can cannibalize their own sales of K series of chips.

I've seen some rumours that BLCK will be blocked on non K - hopefully we get some reviews soon.

I can confirm that the bclock is limited on non-K. You might be able to get 104-105 before crashes.

well just as I guessed, thanks for the confirmation. intel isn't so dumb at all to allow overclocking in non K chips and allow potential cheap i3s or i5s to become little monsters and then waste the profit of K chips and cannibalize their own sales.
